Great guy. Had the pleasure of meeting him in 1988 in Asheville, NC. He was signing autographs at the mall, from what I remember I was only 7 at the time.. His car was on display in the parking lot. Long story short, I was trying to look inside his car and he asked me if I wanted to sit in it. He picked me up and put me inside. Needless to say, I will always be a fan.

That's awesome, and exactly what we need to preserve in hotrodding or even just life in general. Whenever I'm at a car show and see signs like "DO NOT TOUCH!" I always think "what a shame, what a waste" because think of the lives that could ne changed by simply saying "get in there and fire her up". What's the point of having something amazing if you cant share it and create those lasting moments with it?
Davey was the last driver in Nascar that I was a die-hard fan of. Still got posters of him and that Yates Thunderbird on the wall in my shop. There is no doubt he would've been a multi time champion. Even the "Intimidator" acknowledged that.

While waiting in the ticket sales line at Rockingham march 1988 for last minute bottom row tickets the day before the goodwrench 500 the texaco havoline team truck stopped just outside the gate where we were in line after their last practice .. Davey got out and came over to the ticket line and talked to everyone there .. he took pics and signed autographs until the line was finished .. a very humble and polite person who shared his time with the fans that evening.
Another incredible piece by Nascarman! I was sitting on the frontstretch at Pocono that day cheering Davey on when that crash occured. Still to this day my favorite driver - cant believe its been 25 yrs since he left us. Petty, Yarborough, Earnhardt were tough as nails when it came to racing injured, and Davey was right there with them.
i was sitting up near turn 1 rooting for him. It was crazy how dominant he was that day on the green flag runs. We thought Rusty took him out trying to stay on the lead lap, didn't know what actually happened until watching the VHS of it later.
I was there that day in the infield watching my favorite driver of all dominating never saw the crash because I walked to buy a tee shirt when he crashed I couldn’t believe it.Turns out Daveys car ended up being towed to a place down around York where my father in law knew the guy where it was stored and he got me a piece off the car it’s about a foot long and says good year on it it’s from the fender above the tire and I treasure it to this day
Randy Barnes -What a special thing to have. Get as much documentation on it as possible as it’s a piece of a very important drivers history (I’d assume ministry value also).
I was fortunate enough to meet Davey at Dover that year. My first ever Winston Cup race and the best . To make a long story short, I was able to get into the Texaco Havelin hospitality tent before the race to meet Davey. We were told not to ask him for autographs as he still had the cast on his arm. Davey entered and addressed the crowd and talked a little about the race. When he finished, he said , without provocation, " I'll be glad to sign some autographs." I think I may have tripped over my own feet trying to get up and out of my chair. I got him to sign an unused ticket for the race. I still have it to this day and will never sell it for any amount of money. This was a precious memory of a wonderful moment from a great human being that I will always cherish. Missing you Davey.
i met Davey once when he came through the drive-thru of the taco bell i worked at, back in '91 (was kind of surreal seeing him at a taco bell drive-thru, lol). he was so nice and genuine. i'd met his dad, Bobby, a couple times and he was just as nice. i've also met Neil Bonnett a couple times and he was super nice, as well. being from the same home town, it gives me great pride at everything those guys did.
I worked for RYR back then. Summer job. Was in the pits at this race. The Winston before it. Then Talladega after. Unreal. Davey was a legend. A great man. So was Robert Yates. RIP to both.
And/or potential post concussion syndrome. He had zero wrecks between The Winston and that faithful Pocono weekend. That being said, he could have had another ailment ala dehydration that would cause those issues.
I've had post concussion syndrome for years, its not pleasant or conducive to doing ANYTHING,....and how he drove a car that fast, then experienced that Pocono crash and STILl got in that car....🤯🤯🤯🤯
Corey Caudle yes, best car/product NASCAR has every produced. If only NASCAR could recreate these cars with the modern safety technology; this would bring the sport back.
The cars were great, but the personalities of the drivers were better. Those cars with today’s drivers would still leave us fans with something missing. Never again will the sport have names like Allison, Earnhardt, Martin, Wallace, etc. Those guys made the 90s the best!
The same people that say "I love 90s cars" don't even realize the cars were no different than today's cars: soulless tube chassis pretending to be stock cars. Same as 80s cars.
I watched every race profiled in this video on TV in 1992 and attended the Winston 500 also. Got to see Davey win in person. I still have my Texaco Havoline #28 shirt I bought at Talladega, all these years later. I don't think being a race fan was ever the same for me after his passing.
Davey was such a great dude.....we were on vacation in Vermont when we learned of his fatal chopper crash....I was shocked--gut punch....cried.....really hit me...
Davey drove my car at a NASCAR exhibition race in this particular year 1992 at Louisville Motor Speedway. Looking back it's amazing these guys would do this for fun and for the fans during a Championship hunt. My Mother had passed away a couple nights before and the friday night before I had fast time and won the feature from the rear. I had to bring this car back to LMS saturday night along with my Late Model to race myself. We had to put pillows behind Davey but he was fast and led the race until Michael Waltrip got under him with a couple of laps to go. What a memorable weekend...Davey was so nice to us and truly had the heart of a Champion. 🏁
Long live #28, Allison was the one to give Earnhardt, Gordon and the rest of em a run at being called the GOAT of nascar. Definitely top notch and probably the toughest competitor that has ever got on the loud peddle
One of the best. Being from Alabama myself, he is missed so much. Even to this day. He was and will always be remembered as such a nice guy first and the best race car driver 2nd. We miss you Davey!
I love what Larry McReynolds always says about his and Davey's 92 season. If everyone else was going left, Davey and the 28 team had no issues going right. His illness was likely from a concussion suffered during the season. The hits he took at Bristol, The Winston, this race, I don't know how Davey finished the season to start with, and how he survived all those hits. Especially this hit, the speed the car lifts up lands flips, twisting and turning, the cockpit continually changing speeds and directions along with the G forces. So many G forces to burst all the blood vessels in his eyes.
Davey was my favorite driver for many years prior to his death. His death changed me in a way. Hard to put into words. When I was very young, one of my favorite drivers was Dave Cade and he died at Indianapolis Raceway Park. He was a regular at Tucson Motor Speedway when I was growing up. Never could deal with dead drivers.
My sons and myself were big nascar fans at the time and Davey was our favourite great racer and true gent.Whilst driving through Wimbledon England I saw a big black Thunderbird SC for sale in a showroom, well I had to buy it loved that car.R I P Davey

I was at the 92 July Pocono race. I was watching the race in the infield a little beyond the tunnel turn. I’ll never forget Davey’s car flipping so violently! He displayed great resolve by continuing racing. I truly miss Davey to this day! RIP❤️❤️❤️

Davey was the first driver I ever rooted for. I met him once at a signing that went way longer than it should have, but he stayed until every last person that showed up got to see him and get an autograph. I was a fan for life at that point. It broke my little 9 year old heart when he died. I've grown to root for many other drivers over the years, but Davey will forever be my favorite.
I never met any of the Allisons personally, but just knowing that my uncle used to hang out with Bobby & Donnie in Hialeah in the late '50s makes me proud enough...
What we know about head trauma today sounds like Davey had concussion symptoms from all the devastating accidents from the 92 season. The Allisons and the loss of that racing family Nascar was never the same without the Alabama Gang
@@drpiv We knew all that about head trauma back then too. We just didn't care as much, and that's the truth across all sports, notably youth sports. I wasn't much of a fan of Bobby Allison, but to lose two sons in their prime, just a year apart - I really do feel for the guy. Racing rivalries mean nothing. That's just devastating. I think I really would have liked Davey too. Doesn't he just sound like everybody's friend?
I was at this race and was in the infield right where it happened, I had my camcorder recording when it happened. My dad and I were huge fans and I remember running up to the fence praying he was ok.
I was sitting in one of those campers between turns 2 and 3 when he wrecked! I was 9 and was shocked that I saw the crash front of me! Looking back at the 1992 season, I feel so bad for Davey. He deserved to win the Winston Cup that year after all he went through.
Davey AND Dale. Dale drove with a cracked neck. True story: I was a freshman when Theresa Houston Earnhardt was a senior. Dale used to pick her up from school on Fridays in a street legal racecar. The doors didn't open. Dale would flash his big grin and would do about 7 or 8 donuts in the parking lot before leaving. We all loved it! The principal, Glenn Barger, not so much. He called the cops on Dale. All Dale had to do was teach one of our driver ed classes about the dangers of speeding and horseplaying in a car. After his 5 minute speech, he taught us how he could feel the air and draft to save on fuel. We Were already a bunch of degenerates. When we got our license, during every full moon, about 6 cars would play hide and seek on Rock Barn Road in Claremont. We drove with our lights off and hid. If you were it, and found someone, you'd hit your lights to tag them, and the game would start again. Dale Earnhardt taught us that Gane in drivers ed that day. There was only 6 of us that had the guts to play it. We never had one wreck and sure had a lot of fun. Davey was a great driver, but he would've never taught that in a drivers ed class. Dale signed autographs for us, but we never hounded him. He was just a great driver picking up his girlfriend/future wife from high school. Dale met Theresa at Hickory Motor Speedway. Theresa's brother, Tommy Houston, was the man to beat on Saturday nights at Hickory. Richard Childress introduced them.
I remember when this was broadcast in 1992 and I first heard that quote, "There ain't nothing gonna happen today that the Lord and I can't handle together." I've tried to remember that and adopt that attitude although sometimes it's difficult. It's been nearly 30 years since your passing, Davey and a lot of race car drivers have come and gone. But - in my eyes - you'll always be the greatest.
My son and I were at that race. Seeing how destroyed his car was when they brought it down the front straight, it was very hard to understand how he survived.
Davey was my wife's favorite driver ( Awesome Bill Elliot was mine). I bought her a black T-Bird Turbo Coup, which reminded her of him. We attended an autograph session to see Davey at Keeter Ford in Belmont, NC during Race Week before the Charlotte 600 in the early 90's. My wife had rehearsed what she was going to tell him, but when she reached the table she was so star struck she couldn't speak or even say 'hello'! Robert Yates approached us in the parking lot and offered his autograph. Angie looked at him and said, 'Who are you?' Robert and I both laughed! Such a loss to NASCAR racing. If he had lived, I am sure he would have won a Championship... My wife stopped watching NASCAR after his death.
I relate to this so much. At the Richmond race September 1992, I saw Davey and by the time I got to the table, the only thing that came out of my mouth was, "Where do you live?" I remember from a very early age, either watching or listening to the race on Sundays so it was always sort of in my blood and when he crashed that helicopter, I prayed and swore I would never watch another race if he wasn't going to be in it. I've kept that promise but my husband was watching the Daytona 500 when Dale died and I was walking through our living room when that crash happened. As I was dialing the phone to call my step-dad to make fun of Dale, I realized there were no NASCAR updates and everyone was being too quiet. I just hung up the phone. With Davey gone, there is no one to root for and with Dale gone, no one to root against. I miss them so much.
Angie packed her black #28 Davey jacket away for years. Just recently, she pulled it out of a box and wore it to the local Walmart. One lady saw it and tried to buy it but she politely declined. She got some looks from others our age also...
@@danielright2044 The Turbo Coupe was a turbo-charged four cylinder. Luckily, we had a warranty. Three turbos went out on hers. We traded at the same dealership for a Monte Carlo. There were others who had similar problems with the turbos. Ford finally quit making them and focused on the six bangers.
It's funny, I can watch and/or listen to all kinds of stuff that take me back, in my mind, to a place when times were so much better for me. But I have a particularly hard time watching old Nascar races. To the point where I won't watch them normally. In fact, this will be the first video of a classic Nascar event ever. Davey Alison was a favorite of mine. Watching Old Nascar events is to painful for me to watch. I miss them times that much.
I still have his Racing Champions diecast from 1993. So I had it since I was two years old. It doesn't roll right but still means a lot to me even though I'm too young to remember him racing. I watch old NASCAR races on TH-cam from before I was born and I always hoped Davey would win. 😀
@@michaelhall736 I used to have tons of Davey cars and cards and other stuff. Sadly 90 percent of it was lost in a move...or I left it at my ex wife's house when I escaped lol, I don't remember. I do still have a Davey shirt I wore all the time during the mid 90s in elementary school that listed all of his wins on it. And a couple 28 hats. One thing that always bothered me is I missed my chance to see him race in person by a month. My dad had bought tickets to the August Michigan race in 93 to take me to my first ever race and I was like 7 years old. He died the month before. Lake speed did drive the 28 that day though. Then the next year Ernie Irvan nearly died in practice driving the 28 at the fall Michigan race. I can remember that too. It almost seemed cursed. I'm not 💯 sure but I believe Kenny Irwin died at NH in the 28 car. Anyway.... I also watch 80s and 90s races on TH-cam lol. Everything about that era was so much better, I really miss it. And I miss ol BP and Ned doing the commentary. Those guys were great. I'd honestly rather watch old races on TH-cam than anything today.
@@ryanwinkelman1781 Kenny was in the 42 owned by Felix Sabates (sp?) when he was killed. I never had any memorabilia as a kid though I wish I had. His widow Liz sold some hall of fame items late last year and I did take advantage of that. It's certainly not the same as owning something vintage, but I'll make do lol.
He was a tough cat. Never had the pleasure of watching him, as I was not born yet/ too young, but he had some heavy wrecks and just kept bouncing back. Good guy, and funny too. Certainly had the makings of a champion

I remember my dad(a massive indycar/f1 fanboy) wishing Mark Martin would somehow win a championship. And my strongest memory of NASCAR was the meteoric rise of Jeff Gordon and the massive amount of hate that the dude got! Anyway, only wanted to make it clear that your content is so well done that even some1 who's not really a fan of this sport, im still thoroughly enjoying all your work! keep up the great work!

Never was a DW fan but it’s a known fact among drivers that if you block you may get by with it once, maybe twice but after that you’re going to get punted.
Exactly... The fact that Davey was unable to close the door on DW meant that DW was coming thru. If Davey moved down and DW was in the way, that proves that Davey didn't have clearance; it was not DW's job to drive into the grass at that point. Neither was to blame; it was "just good, hard racing"...
@@lordofthewoods I agree, there wasn't anywhere for DW to go at that point. Just sucks they didn't have roof flaps back then. I think some people displace some anger from the helicopter crash onto DW subconsciously. Just sucks so much that both Davey and Alan were lost like that when they were both practically supermen in a stock car (when they were still dangerous).

Davey Allison is my favorite driver. I seriously doubt that Jeff Gordon would have been as big of a deal if Davey hadn't passed away. Davey would have obviously won his share of Winston Cup championships. After Davey's demise I started cheering for Mark Martin. Losing 3 great drivers (Alan Kulwicki, Davey Allison and Neil Bonnett) so closely together was really tough.

One tough driver, admire him for being that badly injured but still dedicated to getting back inside the race car despite all the pain and discomfort he must of dealt with in it. I think he would of been tough competition later on with Gordon, Earnhardt, Jarrett and Labonte for their championship runs in the mid to late 90s if he didn't pass when he did
This video, brutal as it is, doesn’t begin to cover just how brutal Allison’s season was. Everyone thought he was dead at All Star Race too. There were several other races where he got mangled.
I often wonder if all these injuries played some role in Davey's Chopper crash. Some sort of cumulative effect that affected his reaction or judgement that day. Or even that all his previous injuries meant he had less room for more, and the head injury he suffered in the crash was finally too much.
Good possibility, but racing itself is an adrenaline thrill sport. To take a helicopter ride might seems like small bananas. There wasn't much knowledge on head injuries back then though, and what it entailed. His focus and cognitive functions might have been impaired
What's so sad is if you read crash report he got choperr down to 6 inches off ground before it violently jerked upwards.6 inches an he would have been on the ground

I was at this race when I was a kid. 10 years old. I remember this crash very well. The car all of a sudden, came into view already flipping end over end. That’s what I saw from where I was sitting. I live in Pittsburgh. So pocono was kinda our “local” track. DW, won. Which made me happy as hell, because that was my dude back then. Pocono was a track with extremely limited sight of the track. And it was the biggest bastard to get out of the track at the end of the race. I remember it taking us for five hours to get onto the road out of the parking lot.
As a native of PA, I always got excited when Pocono was on the schedule. That year, I didn't get to watch the race, I was 15 and away at summer camp. In the pre-internet pre-smartphone era, when you were out in the woods, it was impossible to get results about anything happening back in civilization unless someone brought you the newspaper. The day after the race, one finally filtered out to us, and I'll never forget the front page of the sports section was a picture of that torn-up race car on it's roof, stripped to the rollcage. When I made it back to town later in the week, and got to see actual TV footage, it wasn't any easier even though I knew what was coming. Worst wreck I'd ever seen since Ricky Rudd took his wild ride at the Busch Clash in 84'
Waltrip had the same type of crash, w/o the guard rail, at the Pepsi 400 in 1991. Michael Waltrip's 100+ mph to a dead stop crash at Bristol still leaves me amazed that he lived through that one.
Met Davey at Riverside, standing in line for Carne Asada Burritos in the pit/paddock. What a nice guy, and I advised him on the awesomeness of the Asada Truck that frequented RIR after he asked what "care, ney, ass, adda" was. We were racing our Formula Ford as part of the support races with Cal Club. He died way too early, it was a real shame, such super nice guy and he drove one of my favorite teams (anything Ford) and rooted for him always.
What a season of highs and lows for Davey Allison in 1992 win in the Daytona 500 amongst the total of five wins in the season but for every win he trades it with a huge crash and injury to go with it. His biggest pain though was the death of his younger brother, Clifford

That's why Pocono is the worst place to watch a race, two places to sit, front stretch or infield.

The cars were great, but the personalities of the drivers were better. Those cars with today’s drivers would still leave us fans with something missing. Never again will the sport have names like Allison, Earnhardt, Martin, Wallace, etc. Those guys made the 90s the best!

I watched every race profiled in this video on TV in 1992 and attended the Winston 500 also. Got to see Davey win in person. I still have my Texaco Havoline #28 shirt I bought at Talladega, all these years later. I don't think being a race fan was ever the same for me after his passing.

Davey was such a great dude.....we were on vacation in Vermont when we learned of his fatal chopper crash....I was shocked--gut punch....cried.....really hit me...
My aunt met Davey two times. One time in 1989 and again in 1992. Also met his dad two times as well. 1992 and 1994. RIP Davey and my aunt Neva.
Davey drove my car at a NASCAR exhibition race in this particular year 1992 at Louisville Motor Speedway.
Looking back it's amazing these guys would do this for fun and for the fans during a Championship hunt.
My Mother had passed away a couple nights before and the friday night before I had fast time and won the feature from the rear.
I had to bring this car back to LMS saturday night along with my Late Model to race myself.
We had to put pillows behind Davey but he was fast and led the race until Michael Waltrip got under him with a couple of laps to go.
What a memorable weekend...Davey was so nice to us and truly had the heart of a Champion. 🏁
That’s one tough race driver. NASCAR fans still miss this great driver.

This was my favorite racer growing up and was devastated when he died so sudden. What a legend in the making!

I love what Larry McReynolds always says about his and Davey's 92 season. If everyone else was going left, Davey and the 28 team had no issues going right.
His illness was likely from a concussion suffered during the season. The hits he took at Bristol, The Winston, this race, I don't know how Davey finished the season to start with, and how he survived all those hits. Especially this hit, the speed the car lifts up lands flips, twisting and turning, the cockpit continually changing speeds and directions along with the G forces. So many G forces to burst all the blood vessels in his eyes.
And he still continued racing. He was a tough son of a bitch. Not like most of the drivers today.
One TOUGH guy and a very respectful person as well..so SAD his life was cut short...

Davey was my favorite driver for many years prior to his death. His death changed me in a way. Hard to put into words. When I was very young, one of my favorite drivers was Dave Cade and he died at Indianapolis Raceway Park. He was a regular at Tucson Motor Speedway when I was growing up. Never could deal with dead drivers.
My sons and myself were big nascar fans at the time and Davey was our favourite great racer and true gent.Whilst driving through Wimbledon England I saw a big black Thunderbird SC for sale in a showroom, well I had to buy it loved that car.R I P Davey

I was at the 92 July Pocono race. I was watching the race in the infield a little beyond the tunnel turn. I’ll never forget Davey’s car flipping so violently! He displayed great resolve by continuing racing. I truly miss Davey to this day! RIP❤️❤️❤️

Davey was the first driver I ever rooted for. I met him once at a signing that went way longer than it should have, but he stayed until every last person that showed up got to see him and get an autograph. I was a fan for life at that point. It broke my little 9 year old heart when he died. I've grown to root for many other drivers over the years, but Davey will forever be my favorite.

What we know about head trauma today sounds like Davey had concussion symptoms from all the devastating accidents from the 92 season. The Allisons and the loss of that racing family Nascar was never the same without the Alabama Gang

@@drpiv We knew all that about head trauma back then too. We just didn't care as much, and that's the truth across all sports, notably youth sports. I wasn't much of a fan of Bobby Allison, but to lose two sons in their prime, just a year apart - I really do feel for the guy. Racing rivalries mean nothing. That's just devastating. I think I really would have liked Davey too. Doesn't he just sound like everybody's friend?

I was at this race and was in the infield right where it happened, I had my camcorder recording when it happened. My dad and I were huge fans and I remember running up to the fence praying he was ok.
I was sitting in one of those campers between turns 2 and 3 when he wrecked! I was 9 and was shocked that I saw the crash front of me! Looking back at the 1992 season, I feel so bad for Davey. He deserved to win the Winston Cup that year after all he went through.

Davey AND Dale. Dale drove with a cracked neck.
True story: I was a freshman when Theresa Houston Earnhardt was a senior. Dale used to pick her up from school on Fridays in a street legal racecar. The doors didn't open. Dale would flash his big grin and would do about 7 or 8 donuts in the parking lot before leaving. We all loved it! The principal, Glenn Barger, not so much. He called the cops on Dale. All Dale had to do was teach one of our driver ed classes about the dangers of speeding and horseplaying in a car. After his 5 minute speech, he taught us how he could feel the air and draft to save on fuel. We Were already a bunch of degenerates. When we got our license, during every full moon, about 6 cars would play hide and seek on Rock Barn Road in Claremont. We drove with our lights off and hid. If you were it, and found someone, you'd hit your lights to tag them, and the game would start again. Dale Earnhardt taught us that Gane in drivers ed that day. There was only 6 of us that had the guts to play it. We never had one wreck and sure had a lot of fun.
Davey was a great driver, but he would've never taught that in a drivers ed class.
Dale signed autographs for us, but we never hounded him. He was just a great driver picking up his girlfriend/future wife from high school. Dale met Theresa at Hickory Motor Speedway. Theresa's brother, Tommy Houston, was the man to beat on Saturday nights at Hickory. Richard Childress introduced them.

I remember when this was broadcast in 1992 and I first heard that quote, "There ain't nothing gonna happen today that the Lord and I can't handle together." I've tried to remember that and adopt that attitude although sometimes it's difficult. It's been nearly 30 years since your passing, Davey and a lot of race car drivers have come and gone. But - in my eyes - you'll always be the greatest.

My son and I were at that race. Seeing how destroyed his car was when they brought it down the front straight, it was very hard to understand how he survived.

Davey was my wife's favorite driver ( Awesome Bill Elliot was mine). I bought her a black T-Bird Turbo Coup, which reminded her of him. We attended an autograph session to see Davey at Keeter Ford in Belmont, NC during Race Week before the Charlotte 600 in the early 90's. My wife had rehearsed what she was going to tell him, but when she reached the table she was so star struck she couldn't speak or even say 'hello'! Robert Yates approached us in the parking lot and offered his autograph. Angie looked at him and said, 'Who are you?' Robert and I both laughed! Such a loss to NASCAR racing. If he had lived, I am sure he would have won a Championship... My wife stopped watching NASCAR after his death.

I relate to this so much. At the Richmond race September 1992, I saw Davey and by the time I got to the table, the only thing that came out of my mouth was, "Where do you live?" I remember from a very early age, either watching or listening to the race on Sundays so it was always sort of in my blood and when he crashed that helicopter, I prayed and swore I would never watch another race if he wasn't going to be in it. I've kept that promise but my husband was watching the Daytona 500 when Dale died and I was walking through our living room when that crash happened. As I was dialing the phone to call my step-dad to make fun of Dale, I realized there were no NASCAR updates and everyone was being too quiet. I just hung up the phone. With Davey gone, there is no one to root for and with Dale gone, no one to root against. I miss them so much.
Angie packed her black #28 Davey jacket away for years. Just recently, she pulled it out of a box and wore it to the local Walmart. One lady saw it and tried to buy it but she politely declined. She got some looks from others our age also...
@@danielright2044 The Turbo Coupe was a turbo-charged four cylinder. Luckily, we had a warranty. Three turbos went out on hers. We traded at the same dealership for a Monte Carlo. There were others who had similar problems with the turbos. Ford finally quit making them and focused on the six bangers.

It's funny, I can watch and/or listen to all kinds of stuff that take me back, in my mind, to a place when times were so much better for me. But I have a particularly hard time watching old Nascar races. To the point where I won't watch them normally. In fact, this will be the first video of a classic Nascar event ever. Davey Alison was a favorite of mine. Watching Old Nascar events is to painful for me to watch. I miss them times that much.
I miss that guy something fierce. I never really did find anyone to replace him.
Neither did I my friend. I became an Elliott fan after Davey's death but my heart was never in it after that.
I still have his Racing Champions diecast from 1993. So I had it since I was two years old. It doesn't roll right but still means a lot to me even though I'm too young to remember him racing. I watch old NASCAR races on TH-cam from before I was born and I always hoped Davey would win. 😀
@@michaelhall736 I used to have tons of Davey cars and cards and other stuff. Sadly 90 percent of it was lost in a move...or I left it at my ex wife's house when I escaped lol, I don't remember. I do still have a Davey shirt I wore all the time during the mid 90s in elementary school that listed all of his wins on it. And a couple 28 hats. One thing that always bothered me is I missed my chance to see him race in person by a month. My dad had bought tickets to the August Michigan race in 93 to take me to my first ever race and I was like 7 years old. He died the month before. Lake speed did drive the 28 that day though. Then the next year Ernie Irvan nearly died in practice driving the 28 at the fall Michigan race. I can remember that too. It almost seemed cursed. I'm not 💯 sure but I believe Kenny Irwin died at NH in the 28 car. Anyway.... I also watch 80s and 90s races on TH-cam lol. Everything about that era was so much better, I really miss it. And I miss ol BP and Ned doing the commentary. Those guys were great. I'd honestly rather watch old races on TH-cam than anything today.
@@ryanwinkelman1781 Kenny was in the 42 owned by Felix Sabates (sp?) when he was killed. I never had any memorabilia as a kid though I wish I had. His widow Liz sold some hall of fame items late last year and I did take advantage of that. It's certainly not the same as owning something vintage, but I'll make do lol.

Lost one of the good ones when NASCAR lost Davey. I was only 3.5 years old when he died, but I now know how important he was to NASCAR.

I remember my dad(a massive indycar/f1 fanboy) wishing Mark Martin would somehow win a championship. And my strongest memory of NASCAR was the meteoric rise of Jeff Gordon and the massive amount of hate that the dude got! The fact that Davey was unable to close the door on DW meant that DW was coming thru. If Davey moved down and DW was in the way, that proves that Davey didn't have clearance; it was not DW's job to drive into the grass at that point. Neither was to blame; it was "just good, hard racing"...

I think some people displace some anger from the helicopter crash onto DW subconsciously. Just sucks so much that both Davey and Alan were lost like that when they were both practically supermen in a stock car (when they were still dangerous).

Davey Allison is my favorite driver. I seriously doubt that Jeff Gordon would have been as big of a deal if Davey hadn't passed away. Davey would have obviously won his share of Winston Cup championships. After Davey's demise I started cheering for Mark Martin. Losing 3 great drivers (Alan Kulwicki, Davey Allison and Neil Bonnett) so closely together was really tough.

One tough driver, admire him for being that badly injured but still dedicated to getting back inside the race car despite all the pain and discomfort he must of dealt with in it. I think he would of been tough competition later on with Gordon, Earnhardt, Jarrett and Labonte for their championship runs in the mid to late 90s if he didn't pass when he did

This video, brutal as it is, doesn’t begin to cover just how brutal Allison’s season was. Everyone thought he was dead at All Star Race too. There were several other races where he got mangled.
I often wonder if all these injuries played some role in Davey's Chopper crash. Some sort of cumulative effect that affected his reaction or judgement that day. Or even that all his previous injuries meant he had less room for more, and the head injury he suffered in the crash was finally too much.
Good possibility, but racing itself is an adrenaline thrill sport. To take a helicopter ride might seems like small bananas. There wasn't much knowledge on head injuries back then though, and what it entailed. His focus and cognitive functions might have been impaired
What's so sad is if you read crash report he got choperr down to 6 inches off ground before it violently jerked upwards.6 inches an he would have been on the ground

If I may offer a small piece of constructive criticism... on your next video, maybe leave your text captions on screen for another half-second or so? Several times I had to rewind because I wasn't reading as fast as the text would move on to the next segment. Otherwise, this was excellent and I look forward to the next one.
You're right. I'm not happy with how short some of the screens were. That's something I'll keep a better eye on next time.

I was at this race when I was a kid. 10 years old. I remember this crash very well. The car all of a sudden, came into view already flipping end over end. That’s what I saw from where I was sitting. I live in Pittsburgh. So pocono was kinda our “local” track. DW, won. Which made me happy as hell, because that was my dude back then. Pocono was a track with extremely limited sight of the track. And it was the biggest bastard to get out of the track at the end of the race. I remember it taking us for five hours to get onto the road out of the parking lot.
As a native of PA, I always got excited when Pocono was on the schedule. That year, I didn't get to watch the race, I was 15 and away at summer camp. In the pre-internet pre-smartphone era, when you were out in the woods, it was impossible to get results about anything happening back in civilization unless someone brought you the newspaper. The day after the race, one finally filtered out to us, and I'll never forget the front page of the sports section was a picture of that torn-up race car on it's roof, stripped to the rollcage. When I made it back to town later in the week, and got to see actual TV footage, it wasn't any easier even though I knew what was coming. Worst wreck I'd ever seen since Ricky Rudd took his wild ride at the Busch Clash in 84'

Waltrip had the same type of crash, w/o the guard rail, at the Pepsi 400 in 1991. Michael Waltrip's 100+ mph to a dead stop crash at Bristol still leaves me amazed that he lived through that one.
Met Davey at Riverside, standing in line for Carne Asada Burritos in the pit/paddock. What a nice guy, and I advised him on the awesomeness of the Asada Truck that frequented RIR after he asked what "care, ney, ass, adda" was. We were racing our Formula Ford as part of the support races with Cal Club. He died way too early, it was a real shame, such super nice guy and he drove one of my favorite teams (anything Ford) and rooted for him always.
Davey Allison should have won the championship. Broke my heart when he died. I heard it on the radio and pulled the work truck over and cried !

What a season of highs and lows for Davey Allison in 1992 win in the Daytona 500 amongst the total of five wins in the season but for every win he trades it with a huge crash and injury to go with it. His biggest pain though was the death of his younger brother, Clifford
