    Such a beautiful place up there, my father in law turned me on to bwca!
    He is unfortunately not with us anymore but I will forever be grateful that he took me up there.
    Now I'm making memories with my own family there!

      Beautiful! Keep on sharing the love of the BWCA! My father passed on in 2014, on the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act, and there is a stand of white pine up there that I affectionately call "Dad's Pines". He shared the BWCA with my brother and me, and it has forever changed the way I think about the world. Powerful place!

    Refreshing to see someone actually eat the fish they caught from these lakes. Most people just throw it back and pull out dried food they packed in from the city.

    That is the absolute best way to cook trout! Makes me hungry!

    • @stcroixoutdoors
      @stcroixoutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We cooked them a few different ways, but using the cast iron skillet really controlled the heat on the foil wrap. It was well worth the extra pack weight! It was actually my first time cooking lake trout over an open fire, and it was amazing! My teammate in the video, Jason, has lots of campfire cooking experience and is quite the gourmet!

      Thanks for watching! I am thankful for the camera technology that has made documenting this sort of thing possible! We packed in about 35 pounds of camera gear and batteries -- made for some challenging portages, but well worth it! Love those wilderness waters!

    Great video. One of my bucket list items is to fly fish for them in the BWCA. I've done countless trips up there, but never to fish for lakers. THAT....and fly fishing the Lake Superior tribs for stealies.

    • @stcroixoutdoors
      @stcroixoutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! I honestly have no idea about how fly fishing would work, but they are shallow right after ice-out! Would be very cool to be able to get a laker that way!

    You've learned a lot about fishing the Boundary Waters since 1995. No GORP and summer sausage for you this time!

    • @stcroixoutdoors
      @stcroixoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! There is still GORP and Summer sausage too! It just doesn't make it on camera (LOL). I still have fond memories of our trip up the Temperance flowage and around to Sawbill. If only it wasn't VHS-C back then!

    im assuming this is the States side of Quetico Provincial Park my dad and i go in Stanton Bay of the Canadian side theres so many fish in this park and i love it no motorized vehicles allowed is so great its not a place for the faint of heart. so quiet you only hear the sound of birds wilderness etc and you can cathc lake trout right off the shore and they are so full of meat....caught 4 last year all about 4 lbs..

    • @stcroixoutdoors
      @stcroixoutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent! Yes, this is in the BWCAW in areas in the vicinity of Sea Gull Lake. Just as you mentioned, it is all non-motorized, canoe and portage. Great exercise and beauty in wilderness. I still haven't made it to the Quetico, but some day for sure! Cheers!

    Hi! Really captures the tranquility of the BWCA in your video, very well done. What were you guys using as far as tackle? Leeches or lures maybe?

    • @stcroixoutdoors
      @stcroixoutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Thanks for watching! We were using #0 Rapala. (Two trebel, small size). It seemed the key to catching them was being able to throw out a lot of line and then trawling very slowly into the wind or drifting and ruddering with the wind, near to shore or crossing the middle of bays and out to the edge of reef structures. We used a blue-back, silver-belly Rapala. That seemed to be the key. We did catch one trout on a perch colored "Shad-Rap". Limit is 2 fish per day, so between the two of us 4 fish...We had no trouble catching three or four each day and had packed in minimal food. Almost every fish was caught near shore and on that blue-back, silver belly Rapala. Ice out in May to early, early June the fish are in 8 to 12 feet of water in lots of lakes around Sea Gull Lake. Good Fishing!

    What were you using to catch those lake trout. I have been to the BWCA multiple times, but have never really tried to catch any lake trout due to the fact that I don't really know where to start and I could always find Pike smallmouth or walleye. This upcoming summer I am planning a trip to hopefully get into some trout in the BWCA, just hoping you could give me some pointers, Thanks!!

    • @stcroixoutdoors
      @stcroixoutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi! The only trout fishing I know up there is mid-May (ice-out) to early June before the trout run deep. We use a small Rapala, two hooks, usually with a blue back and a silver belly. We fish the shorelines of lakes noted as Lake Trout lakes in various publications, and we tend to drift over points and across bays. Having a reel long enough to freely cast out a lot of line is important, even in the shallows, as you want to be about 8 to 12 feet down consistently. We don't use monofilament but instead use a well-behaved, modern braided line. That way we get an increased test-poundage without adding diameter to the line. I am no expert. We don't catch big ones, mostly between 18 and 22 inches, just right for eating! Catching deep trout is still a mystery to me! Once the lakes warm up, I tend to seek out walleye and northern pike waters as well. Good fishing to you!

      Brian M Collins you say you're no expert but you sure know a lot more than me, Thanks for the help.

      Thanks! We couldn't have asked for a more spectacular trip--11 Lake Trout in 3 days (Limit 2 each per day). Pike and walleye trips are great for mid-summer, but the May lake trout trip was a first...and life-changing! It was fun making the film... Brought 35 pounds of camera gear up there. I used Canon 7D, Canon Powershot SX230HS, and GoPro, plus Tascam 60D and Movo Shotgun mic...all packed in Pelican Cases! Heavy portages!

    What lake and did you have success on?

  • @anton-scottgoustin5425
    @anton-scottgoustin5425 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    honestly, if I was the chef--I would warm smoke the trout! you need to bring along some mesquite and hickory chips (soak in water overnight before tossing on the fire), need to cover to contain the smoke (aluminum foil)
