I purchased and built this kit when it was originally released in...1975, yes, 47 bloody years ago! As others noted , the port side stations were "missing", but that was deliberate so that the finished diorama could be viewed at "eye level" rather than just overhead. The first released only had parts to create three crew, Kirk in a seated position, Sulu with arms crossed and Spock with his arms "slapped" flat against his sides. (Spock in the show could be a bit "rigid", but he was rarely that "stiff".). the mold seams for the heads were not "front" and "back" as is usually done for figurines, but "left" and "right". That resulted in Kirk having a disturbingly lopsided face, like some malformed "pod person" (at least in my kit). The other drawback of that original pressing was the set of decals. Lets just say they were more "in the spirit" of the button layouts and system readouts. Honestly, some of the little square "screens" looked more like"floral patterns" than "power system displays". What is now included is an improvement by orders of magnitude! The current kit still has two obvious "goofs" that were preset in the '75 kit. The door is too large and too shallow, while the main viewer is too small and too deep. In effect, the sculptor(s) of the prototype got the features reversed. The door can be somewhat corrected by adding strips of styrene "sheets" to reduce its height and width, but not much can be done for the main screen unless the entire panel were constructed from scratch. And then the decals supplied would prove too small. Of course, I was just 12 when the kit came out, so my modeling skills (or, more accurately, lack thereof) did not do the kit any favors. I certainly did not present it as a 'display piece" but used it as a "playset" as did by childhood buddy Kyle.
Such a beautiful kit. I know most viewers want to see cars, cars, cars, but THESE are the builds I like to watch in their entirety. The unique builds. The oddball builds. The one-offs. Up to now, my favorites have been the Pirates of the Caribbean (with "Zap/Action!") reissues (as well as the Haunted Mansion) which I built in their original form when I was a kid, but this "Star Trek" bridge build is now near the top of my list. Well done, of course, but, as always, it's your passion that proves most infectious. Thanks for the entertainment - and the memories!
Remember that kit when I was a child. Loved STAR TREK , grew up with it back in the 1966 era. Will have to get it. Not real good at painting figures but, worth a try.
oh joy thank you Chris just watch the great build on the smart tv i had to reply on the mobile. take a bow and receive all the praise. also the great tie in with 2001 a space odyssey music waltz when the Orion goes to land on the space station a touch of class.👍👍
I first did one of these in 1975.. I'm now doing two: One basically out of the box (a 90s issue I had in my stash) and a new reissue with aftermarket parts and (possibly) lighting!!!
As it's late here I'll have to watch this later, but seeing it just triggered a memory that I HAD a bridge model. Maybe a version of this, maybe different. Looks roughly the same but I'm 53 now so we're probably talking 40+ years ago at least and of course I used it more as a toy not a model, as kids are prone to do. We'll have to see if it triggers any more memories.
Superb job I love how you build kits, and I pick up tips along the way. Very reasonably priced kit, I'm tempted to get two sets so I can use all 10 heads, more importantly to have Scotty on the bridge!
Did you discuss the 36 degree offset? The elevator doors are supposed to be directly behind the captain as it would match with the elevator housing when you view the top of the ship from the outside. For filming purposes they did not want it directly behind Kirk, where it should be if Kirk was facing the front of the ship. So they put it to the right 36 degrees giving a more dramatic view of it being used in a cinematic manner. With your model, if you face Kirk directly to the front of the ship, put the top of the Enterprise on and see where the elevator shafts ends up. Interesting isn’t it?
LOL, my man, I just like having fun building models. I don't need to know every minute detail about a subject to enjoy the kit. If you do, that's cool, enjoy your hobby your way. Thanks for watching!
The view screen looks a tad small, out of scale with what we see on the TV, perhaps it's just perception from the camera 'Zooming In' on the screen? Sorry forgot to say 'Great Job' looks really cool 👍
I got so excited when I saw that you'd built this model kit, I couldn't click fast enough. You really did a great job. Thank you for building it and documenting the process. I know that I appreciate it, that's for sure.
Thanks for sharing, I had that exact model kit when I was a small child of course it was too advanced and I did not put it together but wow you just brought back some memories
Yayyy! This is soooooo coool! They've added some stuff to this reissue which makes it more accurate. Back in the day there were some wall panels missing and there are now more crew figures. This version is vastly superior to the original issue and out of the box it makes a very nice bridge model. Old guys like me would have DROOLED over this version 40 years ago! Thanks Chris! P.S. Do you have a personal preference for decal setting solution? You've used several brands in your videos and I was wondering if you value one over another. I make so few kits with decals any more I've been fine with Micro Sol and Micro Set, but if you like something better please let us know!
Does that fix the decals so they don't come off? (I have the bridge toy playset for the Next Generation series, I think those action figures were 5-6 inches tall.)
@@recoveringsoul755Hey, Soul! Decal solutions soften the decal film so it snuggles down to the plastic, especially if there are rivets and panel lines in the model. Some are two-part systems but Tamiya is a one-and-done item. While the solution sets the decal will pucker and wrinkle, which is normal. Once dry the decal will smooth out and look painted on. There are lots of how-to videos on the internet, so have fun and watch a few! Probably best to experiment with an old kit until you see how things work.
This video is so awesome 👌, your enthusiasm for our hobby is so refreshing Chris! Thanks for taking the time to share your builds with us!! Keep them coming!!
You might consider making a clear plexiglass lid for the set to keep the dust off. Make it removable so you can reposition the figures. Thanks for this build.
Funny, how some things can spark a long forgotten memory. I was in second grade in 1967 (when Star Trek was first on T.V.) and I remember a kid in my class that was bonkers over the show. I don't remember being really that interested in it - but this other kid was crazy about it. Well, I started telling him that I had a complete set-up of the Enterprise (I actually didn't) all the characters, every thing. Every day telling him more and more - just to be a bratty kid with no other reason than to antagonize him. This teasing went on for several weeks and he was begging to come to my house to see all the stuff I had lied about. Eventually, it was forgotten - but this video reminded me ! Childhood psychological warfare........I hope it didn't cause him any mental disorders as he got older.........
Wow holy cow this guy even got Kirk down to the hole in his rug bald spot absolutely correct. However I didn't see the Viagra tablets in Spocks uniform pocket
...second watch - second idea. Three colors of 12 volt pre wired FLASHING LEDs running from a 9 volt "snap top" battery, could make those control panels look lively (one behind each panel).
This was very intriguing, this build. I never saw this model as a boy. BIG Star Trek(original series)fan. I really dug this video man! Cool music during the painting process. I'm never disappointed with any of your videos Chris. Thanks, and until next time "keep on building!"
Wow! Chris I normally have very low tolerance for most sy fy models. But this one is different, I never missed an episode of Star Trek when it was new. This kit is awesome! I was hooked as soon as I saw the decals, the alien head shot was the final nail. Keep up the good, diverse work.
I kept hearing the bridge sounds and turbo lift doors opening and closing while watching this video LOL! Great model and its definitely on my list of must get. Awesome video and modeling as always.
Looks awesome. I bought the Playmates Star Trek figures back in the 90s. TOS is one of my favorite shows. My favorite episodes are Space Seed, The Gamesters of Triskelion, Patterns of Force and A Piece Of The Action.
Great job! Really enjoyed this build. Something different than cars ect. So many times I have seen folks build this kit, and I often wonder if they ever watched Star trek. The colors are so far out... good job!
Excellent build. Thanks for sharing this with us. I always wanted them to make a movie style bridge for the "TWOK" Enterprise- with view screen options of Reliant or Kahn or the Genesis planet...
Just got my kit of this in the mail! Can't wait to get started! Hopefully it turns out as nice as yours! Great job as always! Just seems kinda funny they didn't put a floor bottom in. Nice innovation on your part. I'll probably put a piece of styrene sheet. Always enjoy watching your builds!👍🏻😊😀
I had an Enterprise TOS bridge scale kit that I put together as an early pre-teen in the 1970's & I have to wonder if that was what this reissue is based on. That kit had since been gone for 40+ years, probably trashed, but I do remember it. It feels as though my parents bought it at K-Mart. Doing a quick google, the one that I may have had in the 1970's was the AMT S950, released in 1975. You did a good job overall though, including the lazy susan platform. "A Bridge Too Far" was a WWII movie. But THIS Bridge is easily within reach. Dang - you've detailed the kit so well, it's like you can hear the bleeps and blips in the background. "Eye - THIS one will take Warp Nine - no problem!" (that was Scotty imitating himself).
Damn after I get out of them frustrating State Dept meetings I was looking at this for like some kinda new relaxing escape. I guess I gotta call my mom and tell her don't get me one for my birthday. I'll keep working on them new submarine missiles for now..
"Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages,of the Starship Enterprise. It's five year mission,is to explore strange new worlds. Seek out new life, and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man,has gone before".
Looks great. How do you glue parts together after painting? Paint interferes with glue so did you tape off before paint? I didn't notice if you did. Do you remove paint somehow in glue areas after painting? Just curious.
Really nice! The Tamiya can shows as TS-81 which is light grey, but you mention a Royal Air Force Grey in video. It that the same Tamiya can, or is it a different color number? Is the Deco Art craft paint 'Slate Grey'? What brand and color are the small glass red and blue paint bottles? How thick MDF board did.you use? Did you just glue it to the bottom? What brand and color grey did you use on it?
I just got my copy last week. My plan is to build it from the box, but I'll want to use it to display better in-scale "Trek" figures once they become available. (3D Printed?) It's too bad that another female figure (standing?) wasn't included for the alternate female head. I'd also want other aliens from the "Trek" universe to crew some of the stations, as well as in-scale figures from other franchises (in Starfleet Uniforms, of course.) Personally, I think that having a Altrusian/Sleestak from "Land of the Lost" at one station, a Melmacian from "ALF" at another station, and even one of Alex Ries' Birrin (with a custom chair to accommodate their hexapod bodies,) would add even more variety and interest. A cool idea for aftermarket decals might be to make different dedication plaques for the Turbolift alcove, allowing the builder to depict the bridges of other Starfleet ships. Uniform badges and wrist braids would also be nice to have . . . . Thanks for posting this!

I used my 1974 bridge model to scale up a bridge to fit my 8" Star Trek Mego Figures.
i always found painting and watching someone paint a model relaxing
I wish they'd put out a Star Trek the Motion Picture bridge model.

Fantastic job
