Excellent video - clear and easy to follow. I'm a 63 year old female with minor mechanical skills but I watched the video and followed it exactly and it worked like a charm! My husband is too tall to fit in the back seat to do it and we're 200 miles from a dealership, so it was me or nothing! I loved the tips and explanation of how to do everything. Great job!
This man is hands down one of the most knowledgeable BMW TH-camrs. You've helped me so much with my 05 330ci. You've saved me many hundreds of dollars, probably much more. Thanks so much for your time and knowledge, it's greatly appreciated.
the best DIY video ive ever seen especially in automobile how-to's. thank you for sparing all the useless candor and getting down to what we came here to see... i also really enjoyed how you began the video with symptoms that would call for this replacement. great job!
I would like to add....... to minimize or even prevent fuel from spilling after taking the hose off is to do this (if time allow) when the car has been sitting at least overnight and the engine has not been started. This way the pressure inside the fuel line has been reduced and will prevent gas from spraying inside your car. Thank you for making this video.
Thank you. This video was super helpful. Specifically about removing the electrical connector from the pump. My was super dead. No response. The new one powered up immediately and the car started right up. Admittedly it probably should have been replaced a while ago. I have a 2001 330i with 135k on it and was running the original pump. I saw someone in a forum say "living on borrowed time." That was me. Thanks again and I'm subscribing!
Boy do I love the fast-forwarding over the boring bits! Every How-To vid should do this! And the trouble-shooting intro was a solid bonus. Excellent job. Five/five stars. Would watch again.
Mine is starting to fail now. I was so worried that this repair would cost me a fortune to get a mechanic but I’m glad that it’s a lot simpler then I thought it was gonna be!
very little mechanical skills and only the most basic tools here. this video helped me get the bad pump and new one in in 40 minutes. perfect video. thanks so much!
Should be noted the M3 uses a totally different connector, just found out the hard way, along with all the headaches with seller trying to wiggle their way out of refund. These use barb n hose, m3 has rimlock attachment. Plenty of 330i pumps being sold on eBay listing compatibility with the M3 too, again, a point I discovered after the fact!! Great vid as always man
Thanks Jason, I'll be doing this over the weekend. Your videos are awesome and a huge benefit to those of us that will drive our E46's into the ground : )
Thanks for this great video! I used it last night to replace my fuel pump and it took me just over an hour. Only think I would add is to clamp off the fuel hose with some long nose vice-grips to avoid the "big splash"!!!
Brooooooooo thank you from the bottom of my heart!!! My car.. it wouldnt start today (E46 318Ci) Last night it was PERFECT (as usual) today it just wouldnt start?! The starter was spinning everything normal but it wouldnt start.. No lights on the dash.. Must be fuel related my brain said, i checked the components and most probable issue was a fuel pump, saw the video, took few tools and what i did was i hit the fuel pump with the hammer as i was spinning the key to start the car, and it worked :D it started! So now that i had a car, i went and bough a pump had it replaced and issue solved within 1 hour :D Thanks so much man, it was gonna take 4 days if i let my mechanic do that on his own! No car for the weekend? Not today! :D
I wish you were in pa to work on my car. I do all of my own work mostly because I don't trust many shops but I can tell your knowledge of bmws is far above an average mechanic. Great videos
Excellent video as usual! I didnt get nearly that much fuel gushing out the hose connection. I used a brush and a shop vac with the narrow nozzle to clean up the area before removal. It's important to make sure you seat that gasket as you did before trying to insert the pump and you can install it before inserting the pump in the hole. It's a little easier to make sure it's seated perfectly that way but just requires a little more jockeying of the pump since the hole becomes slightly smaller. I also marked the ring so I knew about how far to tighten without going overboard. Couldnt get a VDO right away so chose the Bosch and its fine so far. I was too scared to try one of the $50 generics which had a few reviewers with premature failures ;)
When reusing an old pump, you can test the sender part of the fuel pump with a voltmeter. Using the two pins that are closest together at the outside connector, empty should read close to 70ohms and full close to 400ohms. If the float arm moves freely, and you get those readings on your voltmeter when moving the arm, the sender part of the assembly works fine. If those readings are way off or don't scale smoothly, the arm can be pried off with small flathead, then the piece with the contacts for the arm can be cleaned or resurfaced with 1k grit sand paper. Recheck ohms with voltmeter.
a bit late , but if you dont want fuel squirting out in your face while doing this ! , remove the fuelpump fuse, (fuse 53 i think, 15A ) start te car to empty the line and pressure. then do the pump.
The tip for putting the seal on first before the pump saved my ass. About to break it by pushing it in. Thanks for the vid it was great, I've seen some other vid saying to unplug the fuel pump fuse the letting the car die so fuel wouldn't be in the lines as much idk if thats true but maybe try it for yourself
Nice video but you're wrong about the second Fuel Sender, It does not send fuel from one side of the tank to the other. To account for surging and fuel moving about in the tank BMW use two fuel level senders for the gauge. The cluster takes an average of both senders and a delta fuel gauge reading. Otherwise the gauge would rise and fall every time you went round a corner.
HELP!! Outstanding video and thorough instructions. Despite replacing the fuel pump and installing a new BMW fuel pump relay switch, behind the glove compartment, my 2003 - 325xi (E46) still won't start/turn over. My gas tank is 3/4 full. Any and all suggestions to troubleshoot the problem are welcome to get it started. Thank you.
Good video, but....remove fuel pressure relay, and then run your car til it stops (a few seconds) to purge the lines. Disconnect battery. Don't strike metal on metal around fuel. Use brass or two screw drivers opposite of each to remove ring. Easy but be safe.
Great video. Just did it. Super easy but still won't start. Literally the same car. Tried putting more gas hoping it was just too low. It didn't even register that I put more gas in. Think it's the fuel sender?
Thanks for the video! now i dont have to figure out why it has two pumps and which is which! Do you know if a 535/525 walbro will fit in that tank hanger?
Good guide Jason! I want ti ask you if you can make a video about your car, talking about all the modification you have done and how it was before the swap! I will be glad to you! Bye
Nice!!! Does this also help if you run the car then come back and it's hard to start? Let's say full temp 15 minute drive shit off then go to turn back on in like 10 /15 minutes and takes longer to start scenario
Excellent indeed!! Great stuff!!!! Thanks....and the one where u show how to change the fuel filter...that one as well great! thanks dude!!! Now i know where to look if i need a car related mechanics tutorial...cheers!
Great video, only guy online explaining both sides. What led me here was im more then sure fuel gauge is bad. Moves to E pretty quick. By 200 miles says im on empty But wondering what side i would need to fix that? Any input would be great thank you.
awesome video. I have a question, I need to replace my fuel pump gasket because whenever I gas up I can't go above half a tank cause it starts leaking from the bottom of car. I have about a quarter tank right now, would I need to siphon out the remaining fuel or can I get to work?
Good instructional video, just wish I could fast forward the boring bits in real life, lol! Oh, and by the symptoms you described, mine is most definitely a fuel pump issue.
For better safety Ive seen guys use a brass punch (no sparks) vs a screw driver to remove the retaining ring. Bleed line pressure first to avoid spray and disconnecting the battery helps to avoid spark or fire.
Wow, this is very informative. I have got a question for you or anyone who thinks can help. My BMW e46 330d when the fuel is low, can't really tell how low because the fuel gauge on the screen is always at empty(lighting), shows the DDE light and starts making rough idle. So the question is can it be the fuel pump.?
My pump is the original. I'm afraid if I cut off that one time use connector the blue hose then wont be long enough to reach the pump to reconnect it.. Any advice? Thanks! Great video. You explained everything very thoroughly.
So before I pull out my fuel pump. The guy who previously owned my e46 didn't tighten the ring down enough. After 8months of sitting still the o-ring dried out. So it's leaking around the seal. I found a replacement o-ring for $7. My question is...Will I be able to replace only the o-ring itself?
Hi Jason, I have a BMW 318i 2011 automatic, the problem is it sometimes take longer time to start and other time just normal strat. But when I get to the hill my car just loses the power and when i press the padel rev. goes up to three and a half or four but the car still won't go fast it feels like its suffocated, slushed. Please advise whether its sender is gone or fuel pump problem? Many Thanks, Azim
Nice video. Couple of questions. What's under the other cover (behind driver position) under the back seat? In the vid' I think you said there's the 'sender' here - what is that? In the UK we call the sender the device that sends the level or pressure, etc. signal to the instrument gauge, etc. So, the (level) sender like this was clearly part of the fuel pump assembly you removed. I think there is also a suction jet pump somewhere in the E46 fuel tank and I suspect this may be located under the other cover? I'm asking all this because BMW diagnostics tells me there's a fault code on the suction pump. This I think must be the thing that equalizes fuel level across both tank sides? Lastly, do you know if the fuel pump is on the same side on RH drive cars (fuel filler on RH side in this case). Thanks for the vid' - and others too. Ever thought about teaching?

let's say the gasket wasn't installed properly or isn't sitting too flush... would that cause hesitation and power loss as well as only a p0174 code?
if the gasket was not seated properly, most likely spill gasoline into the car.
Thanks, beautiful job explaining the entire procedure. Clear, easy to understand and no unnecessary verbiage.
Thanks Mark!
