    Additional to the lactate: When the lactate gets too much, your body does convert some back but not everything since it is too much ;).

    I thought your video was excellent, and probably one of the best ones I’ve ever seen explaining various things VO2 Max and lactate threshold. In fact on the lactate threshold, I’ve never heard it explained so well and being a former racer and now high end endurance cyclist for 40 years I learned something today, thank you. The humour is great too.. I wish you all the best.

      @@femkegortt Of je makkelijker lage powerzones (Z2/Z3/Z4 Joe Friel) of hoge powerzones (Z5/Z6 Joe Friel) kunt volhouden, relatief aan bijvoorbeeld anderen.
      Of fysiologisch gesproken: of je lichaam beter is in aerobe on anaerobe energielevering, dus lange klimmen/inspanningen (zeg 15-60 minuten Z3/Z4) of korte klimmen/inspanningen (zeg 2-10 minuten Z5/Z6).

    Hey, you don't have to focus too hard on your VO2max itself. If your VO2max is about the same but your threshold and max aerobic power have gone up, it is actually the power that matters. The efficiency with which your body converts aerobic power (generated by burning O2) to cycling power has probably improved. I don't think you have anything to be disappointed about.

    • @femkegortt

      Thank you! I decided to do a test on my own, it gives you accurate trainingzones so i can train as optimal as possible. Also it gives an idea of how much process I have made if u compair it to previous tests and it shows you where you need to work on. If your ftp for example is close to your V02max power zone, it means u have a great endurance but need to do more intensity work (if thats what u want ofc) So u can see the ratios of on what zone u are trained best and what u can/want to improve. Haha i have to put the from wheel in first cause i have to turn that downwards to fit my bike in. The rearwheel cant do that :)

    curious how close your FTP to the actual power you can hold for 1 hour. My FTP is 177 W (yes I'm an unfit old man lol ) but my max power for 60 mins is 141 W

    • @femkegortt

      I think its very close, for me I never do a 60min all out effort but I did do 237w for an hour in an 2.5h race. My ftp would suggest that i could hold 247 for an hour and that would be all out, so I'm quite sure I would be able to hold 247 since i did 237w in an much longer race. Ofcourse how your legs feel and how rested u are make a big difference so maybe when you and your legs feel optimal u could do 177 :). Wish u happy riding

At the end of the of it all I was hurting, and I think my legs probably hurt worse cause I actually had done legs at the gym ( health club/ fitness centre) work out the day before the VO2 test. Now whilst probably not truly accurate. I get some sort of reading of my VO2 from my Garmin, also a lot less invasive as the taking of blood, having the mask on and 12 lead heart monitor attached.

    Great progress! It's very hard to improve your VO2max when you are already fit. It may be easier to tune up your FTP. As you said you need around 5W/kg to become top world class, this is super hard to get there. I am a 42 years old man and stuck around 4.1 W/kg since a few months (as an amateur, I just train 6-8 hours a week though), I cannot imagine how hard it can be for a girl to get to that level and aim at 5W/kg! By the way, these figures tell you everything you need to know about the insanity of guys pretending to be girls and competing with them, disgusting.
    You're young, you still have lots of potential! Continue your training and give it some time, you will continue to progress.

    • @femkegortt

      Goed hoor!

    From what I understand, VO2-max is an important indicator for fitness. But it's not the only one! So there might be other factors that ultimately limit your ability to produce power. And your test kind of supports my argument: Your VO2-max is about the same as last time you took the test. But your FTP went up. So you must have improved in other areas. In addition, from everything I know, VO2-max is heavily influenced by genetics, but you can still improve it a certain amount through training.

      Yess u are right! vo2max is not immediatly a sign of success. The power is what matters in the end. V02max was also per kilo here, if u are lighter its a bit more easy to get a higher vo2max, and also the machines that measure the vo2max can differ sometimes (is what the coach told me).

      @@femkegortt Thanks for reminding me that the numbers also rely on your weight :) So, did you gain some?! 100 % muscles of course ;) I also thought that some differences simply occure through different machines. Btw.: An idea for a future video: What did you do since the last test to increase your w/kg? Training volume, diet, kind of training etc. I think, for many ambitous non-pro athletes, going from 3,8 to 4,2 kg is a huge step. But not totally out of reach. Of course, it might be a little bit easier for men (depending on age ofc).

      Yess I gained mostly because when my vo2max was 62 i was underweight and I was 17, now I am 20 and for my development as a woman and get stronger in cycling I had to learn how to eat enough and I can only say it changed me only for the better! Definitely a lot of muscle, I didn't do any strenght training back then and now I do it once or twice a week. That is a good idea! I'll write that one down.

      @@femkegortt yeah it starting happening a little while back when doing like 4-10 min. intervals max efforts. my breathing would get so shallow i would have to slow down or pass out. there are a few things that have helped liked breathing exercises, yoga, fasting, doing longer intervals like 20-50 mins because you have to pace at a lower intensity which forces more steady deeper breathing. also a big part was position on the bike, straightening my lower back has an immediate effect for giving my lungs more room to expand and reduces the feeling of pressure. then being aware this effect can happen, which is effectively blowing up because it will force me to stop an effort, so im more conscious of it therefore keeping it contained before it gets too bad. at this point its well under control but its good to know what it even was to begin with. besides blood pressure getting to high, i think inflammation is a key factor too, which is why i think fasting has helped too along with avoiding inflammatory foods and triggers. i also noticed when i would be cold it would come on faster.

    Im always impressed by how much power you cyclists got. As male im also a bit triggered, when i see your high ftp stats 😅 my w/kg is clearly lower than 4.2. how does that translate in real life conditions? Would i really stand no chance against you or are those values more of technical nature? Im wondering because riding in real life its never the same power output over a long period of time. Its up and down constantly. I think ftp does not translate so well to that?

    • @femkegortt

      Don't feel triggered, I am also very lucky to have the opportunity to be able to train a lot while doing my Bachelors. I think if you would have the same trainings and the same amount of time to train u would be just as good. I guess it depends on the course, Uphill w/kg matters more then on the flat. If there is a big headwind or in a sprint it can be more in your advantage to be a bit heavier. I am not an expert but that is what i learned from experiences :).

    Hmm... If I somehow managed to change my gender then I might still have a chance to pro ??? Sounds so interesting let me looking into how to do it... Joke aside, few things:
    1. For you elite guys who doesn't overweight, to assess your cardio fitness you should focus the absolute VO2 value, not the per kilogram relative value -- you won't hear this from any pro coach because they are so performance focused, the performance will always be determined by the relative value, but gain or lose 1KG won't affect your actual cardio performance -- you don't gain or lose 1KG on your heart or lungs. You train your heart, you assess your heart. Weight is an independent factor that should be evaluated in it's own way. You might did all the good training and ended up with 2% increase in your absolute VO2max, however your weight just gained the same 2% because you ate too much ice cream, your relative value would be the same, does this mean your training is ineffective??? Well no, you should solve these two independently. So no more frustration on the number, check the absolute value (59.x * your weight), you'll know if you are actually progressing or just it's ice creams and donuts.
    2. In theory your lung is not a limiting factor, in fact your lung have 3x redundancy I read somewhere, if you cut 1/3 your lung, you might still come out with the same number, if the lung is used to it's maximum capacity, we should see VO2max values like 120 or 150 something. Or just think this way, if you take the EPO, you'll have 20% more VO2 immediately at the same failure point, with the same lung of yours. Does EPO expand the lung? No, so lung is not limiting you. the feeling of can't breath in is your brain/nueral system's natrual reaction to lactate or some level of oxygen depletion, I don't even think there's oxygen depletion, if you take your pulse-OX in the last few minutes I bet you'll be in 100% -- no oxygen depletion at all! at least at this level.
    3. Train healthy and be cautious of weight! As a lady don't go over the edge of losing weight... You know what I mean. You'll have problems. And do some running, better become at least a good amateur level at HM distance. It will be good to your bone density. You'll need it when you crash. (we are talking pro here, tell me which pro who don't crash???)
    4. Depends on the number, on a good day we can actually train together... Oh i wish i were a lady (but keep the same power...).

    • @femkegortt

      Hahah if u can dream it u can do it ;). Indeed vo2max was here per kilo but I know coaches who only put value to the Absolute Vo2. For the lungs I am not a expert ofcourse but I know people can train their lungs so that would indeed mean they can change. Yess I do pick up running in the winter exatly for that reason. Interesting stuff :)

    you ride until you basically are on the verge of puking. Its not a great test but it does give you a baseline. This idea that if your VO2 max is high you are going to live longer is ridiculous garbage. You might live better but its no guarantee of longer life.
