On humans recognizing patterns and overdoing it, one of my favorite anecdotes is that astrology predicts the future better than random chance. For example you can pretty accurately predict how crowded your local Walmart will be based on phases of the moon. The actual reason is that EBT debit cards reload at 12:01 AM the first day of the month so if you go to Walmart that night it will be packed with hungry people who's freezer ran empty a few days before. If you track anything over time you'll often find cyclical patterns that are only sometimes caused by astronomical events (tides, climate, etc.)

So true. I’m a science major. I had a Physics professor that made this clear. He previously worked in a lab with large electromagnets. He described a study where biology grad students performed a study using their largest magnet. They placed a breeding mice pair in the center of the magnet and recorded their breeding habits/behavior in the presence of a strong magnetic field. If you’ve ever worked with large electromagnets, commonly the bigger/stronger they are, the smaller the interior space. The pair suffered no ill effects except, they did not breed. They determined the magnetic field inhibited breeding in mice. Later, other studies confirmed mice commonly stop breeding in confined spaces unable to support larger populations. The grad students confirmation bias led them to an incorrect conclusion. Correlation is not always causation. Especially when you have a thesis paper to write, a grant to justify or an employer to appease!

@yux.tn.3641 Yes, true. By the time the Japanese started implementing Western technology and becoming industrialized by the 19th century, the Korean royal family was already weakened, and by various noble families who had a large amount of wealth and influence. It's such a shame. The royal and yangban nobel classes ran a slave state with high taxes. North Koreans never got to experience liberty or democracy. They went from the Joseon dynasty to the brutal Japanese occupation and then to the even more brutal communist Kim regime. North Korea and South Korea still have a class system. South Koreans refuse high paying blue-collar jobs and prefer a lower paying office job because nobody wants to be part of the lower classes. Koreans would rather work at a minimum wage job abroad because Koreans won't see and judge him over working a minimum wage job in Korea. Korea has a huge labor shortage and rilies on migrant labor. Koreans refuse to marry if they can't afford a big lavish wedding. A Korean will confidently speak English to a foreigner but will refuse to speak English in front of Koreans out of fear of being judged for being uneducated and lower class for speaking broken English. This is why Koreans are obsessed about speaking English. Korea is starting to change a bit, but it has many strange behaviors like this. I believe it will take 20 more years for Korean to normalize. Birth rates will go up, but Korea is still overcrowded. 50 million is too much for a country the size of PA. I'm optimistic about Korea. The low birth rate is necessary and temporary. There are about a million foreigners in Korea to fill in the gaps.
It's interesting that Japan and Southeast Asia are the most different from the West. It’s striking that a person with an IQ of 130, the very bottom of the range considered “genius,” is as far from the mean as someone with an IQ of 70, who has what used to be called “mild mental retardation” (now called Mild Intellectual Disability). For context, most people with an IQ of 70 would qualify for Social Security disability benefits in the U.S. As adults, their “mental age” will be around 9 up to 12 years old at the maximum. Many people with an I.Q. Of 70 struggle to live on their, own and many will remain living with family or live in group home settings where they receive some support. Though they might be able to hold a simple job such as grocery bagger, or a work on an assembly line performing a straightforward, repetitive task, they will likely require more intensive supervision, particularly if there are changes in conditions or fluctuations in the requirements of task completion. I have observed that many very intelligent people develop biases which reflect the differences between themselves and the majority of humanity. Usually the degree and manifestations of this bias are heavily influenced by the people in their surroundings growing up and immediately after their transition into adulthood. Just saying….

It’s amazing when you have some expertise in a field and run across someone who has an impressive mastery of a subject area but is self-taught by reading. Usually, the first marker they did not learn about it in school is their pronunciation of words that are outside the common vernacular. In my own field, when I find someone like that, I start paying very careful attention because they are more likely to think creatively and see connections between concepts others miss.

I want to know why SE asia has such a lower disease load than Africa or Tropical latin america. Is it because the dry monsoon kills disease like the temperate winter? is it because they don't have a dairy culture (dairy farming puts you in close contact with shit and bodily fluids)? Is it because of SE asian culture of cleanliness (showering 3 or 4 times a day is normal in Thailand).... as far as I know, no one has really looked into this.
Ooooo Ancient Israel/Near East will be fascinating; where Biblical history collides with written history/archaeology!!!

29:42 Why do you assume your audience and people in general are so stupid?

Do you have a link to the map from the beginning in high resolution ?
lol no
1:26 you can’t even read the map.
Tekumel, if you're into that sort of thing.
Ha! Watching you butchering all those pronunciations was already entertaining by itself, Rudyard.

Oh my God he took on the final boss first.
You need to first understand India civilization. Chinese civilization. Since it takes influence from both of those. And the Western world. And the trends that make up colonization.

I think temperature regulation is partly experiential partly genetic. So me for example cold lol i was on skates by the time i was 5 and am genuinely indifferent to cold temperatures. However I cannot take heat, not at all. Meanwhile I see black people wearing winter parkas ... in the autumn.
