- It's not only time to admit that Batman and Robin is a Christmas movie, it's time to admit it's THE Christmas movie. Die Hard should be watched back to back with it.
This is an incredibly faithful adaptation of Austrian Mr. Freeze along with a dark and subtle take on the inner machinations of a crime fighting bat person and his pet robin. Please have some respect for this under rated piece of high art, not everyone understands greatness.

I will never hate on Joel Schumacher. Batman and Robin was terrible, but Joel didn't make it out of malice towards the fans (à la Rian Johnson).
Joel said he was just trying to make a fun movie, and he even apologized for letting fans down.

Yeah if anything he was trying to do a modern adaptation of the 60’s Batman tv show. But sadly the writing, tone, and characters are over the place to be either taken seriously or be funny.
Schumacher could have and wanted to make a darker/more serious Batman film based on "Year One", but WB didn't go for it.
Actually, yeah. As much as Joel S. failed in his movie, he never went to go and insult fans on how they should love the movie.

He should have been allowed at least one bad movie.
Fun fact:That armor Arnie wore was legit steel and weighed like 60lbs. It was made by the same guy who did the armors for Excalibur.
That armor is kept in the underground salt mines in my hometown.

You need to know that when Batman says to Freeze "you're mad", it was translated in french as "t'es givré" wich means mad in a cold way. French translators just kept the puns going

I always thought it was more based on BTAS. I mean half the character designs are near identical.

Also, goofy as it is, this is easily my favorite rendition of Gotham. Giant impractical ultra gothic architecture, statues holding up skyscrapers, districts with totally different feels to them...it feels like a 70s Batman comic, what can I say? Takes me back to being ten years old reading comics with my dad in the kitchen.
I love the way commissioner Gordon is giving Batman shit for them getting away after all of his cops got taken out by one kick from Mr Freeze.

Fun Fact: During an interview, Jim Carrey stated that Tommy Lee Jones did not enjoy his time acting alongside him.
He came to figure this out one day when he walked into a restaurant that Jones was in. Upon seeing him, Tommy Lee Jone’s face turned pale. When Carrey approached Jones to greet him, Jones hugged him and said to him “I cannot sanction your buffoonery”.

I was about to say Kevin Conroy but then I read the "live-action" part.
It's funny that this was almost concurrent with Batman, the Animated series, which people loved. And that wasn't a "gritty" Batman, but still a series that was telling some mature and thoughtful stories.
So it didn't really kill Batman. Some say it killed Superhero Movies until Batman Begins, but even that is debatable if you're counting Blade, which came out in 1998.
It certainly killed Batman movies, which is probably what people mean when they say “killed Batman”.
It was Gene Siskel that said that Mask of the Phantasm was more mature than the Schumacher movies.
Plus X-Men in 2000 was a modest success, and Spiderman in 2002 did really well. They both had sequels before Batman Begins came out too.

It killed live action Batman films until 2005 though.

I am firmly convinced this was always intended to be a modern twist on 60s Batman. It has the exact same level of camp; we just didn’t quite get there from Forever.

I had seen a lot of 80s Arnold movies before this, as a kid, (predator, commando, etc.) and so I knew how huge Arnold was and I always thought it was weird that he was cast as Mr. Freeze instead of Bane.... but I’m very glad he was chosen to deliver all those ice puns 😂 10/10 would recommend

Showing my age here, but I saw this in the cinema (remember those?) opening day. My friend and I were the only two of eight people to start the film who didn't walk out by the sky surfing scene.

Honestly I think Uma is the least hurt by this haha, she knows what kind of movie it is and chews the scenery in a fun way without being too crap

Interesting, a single compliment towards Silverstone's gluteueus maximus, which this film focuses on CONSTANTLY as does it's camerawork, and the comment magically disappears. *I* didn't put her in that costume or point the cameras on it, Shoemaker did. A LOT.
01:02:27 - Yes, Mr Freeze's teeth were glowing. Arnie's costume included a LED light affixed into his mouth! No wonder it took him 6 hours a day to get into costume. He also did not shave his hair, so that's a skullcap.

As a Gen X'er, seeing this in the cinema, I had never heard as many groans as from the audience for this movie. Except with Highlander 2, which came close. With Batman and Robin, in a San Francisco theatre, there were two guys who'd been smooching during the trailers, but by the time the movie was 1/2 way thru, one of them said "Jęsùs Ch®ïst, tone it down, puh-leeeeeze!" His boyfriend muttered "This movie makes me feel like Charlton Heston."
I guess that the flesh-eating plant needed to be dominanted. The Moment Poison Ivy lost, she also lost control over it, that's why it turned on her

I remembered the ending wrong. I recall thinking the "cure" was somehow powering freeze's suit and he sacrificed himself (by giving away the battery) to save alfred, as a thank you for batman saving his wife.
That would be too good of an ending for a movie like this. Character development/arcs, psh!
That's what I spent the last twenty years thinking! That and Robin's plastic lips are the only things from this movie I recalled prior to this.

I unironically love this movie. It is so cheesy, but purposely cheesy.
in Russia a couple of major tv channels would often play this movie on New Years Eve (Russians don't celebrate Christmas, not on the 25th of December at the very least) in early 00s and so even tho this movie is objectively a piece of trash and one of the worst portrayals of Batman, a character I'm a huge fan of... I also kind of have weird nostalgia for it
also, The Beginning Of The End Of The Beginning by Smashing Pumpkins is a great song (it was written for B&R) and imo the Batman's score theme in this is 3rd best after the Burton movie and BTAS. And I like the weird neon Gotham with insane verticality and ridiculous Atlas statues (or whatever they are supposed to be). Arkham Knight's Gotham was kind of inspired by this movie's Gotham. at the very least it's visually more interesting than Gotham in Nolan movies, which is just Chicago iirc
