It is amazing to me how a professional like yourself makes it look so easy to lay down 5(?) layers of primer, paint and fairing compound and it come out looking like it did (or better) when she came off the assembly line. I know it's practice and that's why you pay professionals what they deserve, but it's still amazing to watch. Even when you accidentally f**** something up. Maybe then especially!
Just shows how much of a perfectionist you are. As they say we learn from our mistakes, if only I could make the one mistake on a job of this sizes I would be so happy.
Just did my first spray with my fugi 4 stage turbine a 47 foot yaht did both sides 2 coats in one day in 12 mph wind and it's perfect unbelievable lve heard the fugi attomizes paint nice but this finish is amazing don't even need sanding but I lightly hit it anyway.
Man, forgetting to change the direction of your spray pattern is something that happens to anyone who has done a lot of painting. I feel your pain in this video. I have done it too many times to count and I get so mad at myself every time. Happens to the best of us. Love your vids!
Andy, Im in the boat repair business and your videos a great. Well done! Glad you emphasized how much prep work is required. No amount of skill with a spray gun can make up for bad prep work.
545 first prime , pin hole with filler or awl quick , or spray balloons . Wet sanding is best . Second prime , pin hole with bondo, 320 wet for finish coat . Pull the trigger
Looks great Andy. I've been spraying Awlgrip and using awl fair and the white 545 primer epoxy for last few years. Anything I can remove from by 45 ft eagle trawler and take home and spray looks great. This year I'm hoping to hone my skills to roll and tip Awlgrip paint on my boat in the slip Hopefully it will look as good as spray. I painted all my teak doors and windows. So tired of dealing with varnishing.
A spray painter mate of mine said they were taught not to change the nozzle pattern unless there is no other choice, which would be very rare. That way it becomes muscle memory which way to hold the gun for the spray pattern. After a while you don't even have to think about it. I guess it prevents mistakes like this and constantly adjusting the gun.
Very informative video. I imagine you stay busy all the time! Thank you for naming the products you use, too. I will be referring back to your videos as I restore my 1977 Mako. Thanks again and Merry Christmas!!
Thanks for showing your mistake. It is so valuable to know that your results are not 'automatic' but down to your attention, skill and care. And to emulate your results it is down to emulating your attention, skill and care (that you share so freely), it is not luck or fate, it is effort. Cheers!
Thanks Andy, always appreciate your content. I’m currently doing the same process to my 18 foot swarbrick design. Spacesailor. Your videos have taught me heaps of tips and tricks for preparation and spraying. Happy sanding😂
You could take a glass scraper with a brand new razor blade and carefully cut through those runs and then what's left will cure up fast so that you have minimal to sand down. You could then spread a small amount of Automotive spot putty over those cut down runs after that cures up you can send those runs down more evenly to the point where the spot putty has been removed.
Andy, to avoid sanding swirl marks, is it best just to not use a palm sander when doing paint prep? I used a palm sander before doing a roll and tip job on my Santana and now, in certain lighting conditions, I see those sanding marks, even though I ended up using 600 grit paper. Thanks!
Holy crap, I can't believe you're human like us! If you're feeling bad about one little mistake, just know how invaluable you are to the rest of us who make 100 time the errors you do.
I watched these videos and I have 2 questions, 1) can the new layer of fiberglass be put down over a metal flake finish? 2) Can the paint be rolled 3 and tipped with a brush?
I`m from South-Africa. Trying to fix old fiberglass baskets. fixing it not really difficult, here we get a flowgell to paint ot spray on top that cure fully. my problem is it that it doesn't cover the old marks and area I fixed, tries a few fiberglass shops. they say there is no primer available in South-Africa. any suggestions???
Why on spraying the hatches are you only wearing a respirator and when spraying topside you are wearing a complete coverall ? Is there a different spay setup ? How much overspray do you generally get in your shop ?
Andy- Request: a video on touching up Awlgrip. Given: A previous video of yours informed us on the benefit of Awlcraft (ease of touch up)and the downside of Awlgrip (difficulty of touch up). Most of our boats have 25 foot paint jobs (looks good from 25 feet away) not your 0 foot “car finish”. Would you please do a video on repairing Awlgrip chips and scratches to the 25 foot standard?
Thanks. I almost bought an “air brush” that the T-shirt artists use. I’m glad I held off and will learn from The Master. You provide a great service to us and I recommend your videos to my Westmarine customers. You are appreciated sir.
I just finished watching the awlgrip painting by hand series. There you waited until the next day between coats, whereas here, you waited a couple of hours between coats. Is there a difference in times because you sprayed or simply you had the time to do it every couple of hours? Also, you said you do two coats. Is that - two coats after you did the filler or are you counting the first coat before the filler in your two coat count? So, did you do two in total or three in total? Thanks.
Hi Andy, great video. Can this process be followed when painting deck non-skid with the original mould impression on it? A light sandblast to the gelcoat non-skid seems to prep it for primer ok.
Question: i thought that spraying two part epoxy was extremely dangerous to one's health. I notice that you are using just a cartridge respirator. I though you had to use a pressurized face mask etc. Please share your thoughts. BTW, love the videos, keep it up
We all make mistakes, said the Dalek as he got off the dustbin! Great video, I have a Dutch built Pedro Skiron 35 in steel. It looks like it's been sprayed with deep filler then Awl Grip on top. I want to colour the hull grey instead of white, any thoughts ? I'm thinking roll and tip and final spray coat. Jon. U.K.
I have a question I've watched all your videos! They are really helpful!! Me and me dad are resorting our whole boat from stingers to the hard top. We are most of the way done now it time to fiber glass the deck in i want to go with 3 coats of fiber glass on the deck for Strength is it better to fiber glass all 3 coat as I go or wait for each coat of fiber glass to cure ? Thanks for all the videos they have really helped us out!!!!
What type of sprayer were you using. I have a HVLP setup with a gravity flow cup, does yours have the HVLP gun with a pressure pot? I have shot a few sailboats with mine with decent results, nothing approaching the finish you got though. Well done.
Hi Andy, I enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from them. I have a question about my cape dory non skid deck It's waffle built into the gel coat, so how would you prep it for painting , and what paint should be used?
Andy what pressure are you using at gun? You do beautiful work and the results are perfect. Just watching the over spray in the video when you on top of the boat it makes it all the way to ceiling, that seems like a lot of pressure, I know your use to the pressure but it just seems like to much. Great video, that boat has been in the shop a long time, are you going to get to the Roads this winter?
Thank you very much for this video. I have a few projects on my boat that I’d like to tackle in time that will include painting. With regards to spray painting, how did you start out, did you take classes, or otherwise? Can’t wait for your spray video. Thanks once again
Totally off this subject... but I have just watched a video on BBC iPlayer 'Handmade in Hull' has interesting footage of traditional craftsmen... including a wood carver, and a hand-built yacht-maker... right up your street for a cold winters night.
When you are running a business, you never know if it is a nice big and lucrative job walking through your front door. Perhaps your wife could be in the front doing internet orders, reception, and accounting or watching TH-cam. You will just need some cages for the kids unless they love sanding! Super good eye on the details! I don't usually comment but you deserve many thanks for such density in the valuable experience department. Non-stop tips and information.
i know this a crazy ? what type of camera do you use and what program for editing you use because so far best i have seen i to have a youtube dyi you have gave some great ideas for my boat i am working thanks for any help and great videos thanks from Rich & Peggy
Hi and thanks for the video, do you have any more information on the type of spray gun system that you recommend with awlgrip? thanks, I enjoy your videos.
BoatworksToday I just sprayed the side of my camper with gelcoat. I Have a 3m cup system and a 2.6tip gun that I bought from Northern tool. And I know that clean up is a bitch. I can throw away the cups, but then, I have to clean up the gun. Oh and if you get a chance I have an off white on my camper and the gelcoat is white. I'm thinking of painting the whole camper now to give it a great look. But how do you feel about someone painting a whole camper. Should I or maybe just get rid of it. And get a new one
Saw your paint job Mads! SPIFFY SPIFFY SPIFFY! I'm so looking forward to how you handle the insides now. OMG If it's half as good as the topside...WOW! Please come to the Great Lakes area with Athena when she's done. I'll buy the beer!
Not a stupid question :-) ! Awlcraft is a type of paint made by Awlgrip whereas gelcoat is a polyester based coating that *CAN* look similar to paint but they are two very different materials. Hope this helps!
Really best thing would be to read their application guide. This will outline the materials you need based on how you intend to apply the material. www.awlgrip.com/prodlit/applicationguide.pdf
Went to the website and read up to the disclaimer that "it is not intended as a ‘How To’ guide for the do-it-your self-er." Guess what I am. Do you recommend this brochure or is there another place for me and thousands of my cohorts. BTW I will be using rollers and brush. Not afraid of spraying just don't have the boat indoors, otherwise I would.
That guide is the bible on specifics for using this material. That said before taking any paint to your boat, practice, practice, practice on sample pieces!!
Looking awesome. Question: How come you do not do the gel coat in the mold before you are laying fiberglass? Like when they do boat molds? Love your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Keep the videos coming. :)
I know what it's like to have your train of thought interrupted . Lock the door, hang a sign outside " SPRAYING PAINT , CAN'T STOP , COMEBACK AT ?:00 O'CLOCK " and if they can understand that... too bad .
Question; don’t those products that you are spraying contain Isocyanates? I’m pretty sure they do. The point is, that to my knowledge the respirator your are waring will allow the tasteless and orderless Isocyanates to pass though. Again to my knowledge the only safe way to work with theses products is with a fresh air hood. Isocyanates are said to be a significant carcinogen among other health hazards.
Great video! That said, do yourself a favor and PROTECT THOSE EYES against that stuff when you're spraying...a full face mask with multiple saran wrap peels will save your eyes!
If my little boat project turns out half as good, I'll be happy. You're an inspiration.
I wish I lived close enough to see the beautiful boats rolling out of your shop!!
Maybe then especially!
so true !
Just shows how much of a perfectionist you are. As they say we learn from our mistakes, if only I could make the one mistake on a job of this sizes I would be so happy.
your spraying was a knock out, well done good job.
My Dad used to say the same thing about painting cars. Once he got started he didn't want anybody bugging him! Great video Andy.
Dude I've been spraying finishes for 40 years and I still do that from time to time
I envy you , for I have been building fiberglas stuff for 40 yrs and I never had the technology to help so many . you go man
Man, forgetting to change the direction of your spray pattern is something that happens to anyone who has done a lot of painting.
Use spray balloons, awl quick ,
545 first prime , pin hole with filler or awl quick , or spray balloons . Wet sanding is best . Second prime , pin hole with bondo, 320 wet for finish coat . Pull the trigger
I really want to try out this AwlGrip. I'm going to pick up some little cheap 8 foot row boat or beat up dingy project boat to try it out on.
Woooo so much time without your videos!!! Very glad you are back!!!!
Looks great Andy. I've been spraying Awlgrip and using awl fair and the white 545 primer epoxy for last few years. I've done that with cabinet painting.
I could watch you all day.
Learnings from that mistake are very valuable to me!
Very informative video. I imagine you stay busy all the time! Thank you for naming the products you use, too. I will be referring back to your videos as I restore my 1977 Mako. Thanks again and Merry Christmas!!

I hope Mads is watching - great video!!
Wow great job, absolutely amassing quantity of work 4 one man.
Though surprised it wasn't gelcoat . Thank you 4 your videos ,big fan.
Thanks Andy, always appreciate your content. I’m currently doing the same process to my 18 foot swarbrick design. Spacesailor. Your videos have taught me heaps of tips and tricks for preparation and spraying. Happy sanding😂

Can one apply Awlfair over 545 without sanding if you are within the 24hrs window? I think that's what you show, but it's not clear.
Holy crap, I can't believe you're human like us! If you're feeling bad about one little mistake, just know how invaluable you are to the rest of us who make 100 time the errors you do.
You're WAY too kind :-) Thank you!!
I really would like to see you make that video of your spray gun and how to use it that would be great. Good show and even better work

Hi, nice work !.. question, what size tip on your spry gun? and at what PSI? thxs!

quality finish.
OOPPSS... Been there done that.... But it looks great..
Thank you very much for this video. I have a few projects on my boat that I’d like to tackle in time that will include painting.
With regards to spray painting, how did you start out, did you take classes, or otherwise?
Can’t wait for your spray video.
Thanks once again
Just practiced. Lots of trial and error since at that time there was no YT video's to watch and learn from :-/..
What do you do with the excess paint between coats?
Totally off this subject... but I have just watched a video on BBC iPlayer 'Handmade in Hull' has interesting footage of traditional craftsmen... including a wood carver, and a hand-built yacht-maker... right up your street for a cold winters night.

What size nozzle can u get away with using harbor freight guns?
i know this a crazy ? what type of camera do you use and what program for editing you use because so far best i have seen i to have a youtube dyi you have gave some great ideas for my boat i am working thanks for any help and great videos thanks from Rich & Peggy
No extraction and spraying in an open area with the door open??
Hi and thanks for the video, do you have any more information on the type of spray gun system that you recommend with awlgrip? thanks, I enjoy your videos.
How do you clean up your gun hoses and pot after that. The gun and the pot fairly easy. But then the hoses?????
That video will be coming very soon!

What size nozzle did you use? Can you use a standard gun to spray topcoat?
Can you do a tutorial on Divenycell scored install?
That's looking darn spiffy Andy! Oh...oops wrong channel. :)
Might be the wrong channel but you're right ... that was pretty dang spiffy! :)
LOL!! Thank you :-)
Saw your paint job Mads! SPIFFY SPIFFY SPIFFY! I'm so looking forward to how you handle the insides now. OMG If it's half as good as the topside...WOW! Please come to the Great Lakes area with Athena when she's done. I'll buy the beer!
He he,,, Love the joke.
Think both Andy and Mads liked it as well :-)
Haha... was just about to say it's dang not damn but Mads got in there before me lol We all make stupid mistakes Andy, don't sweat the small stuff ;)
Nice work! You really put that paint down wet! I used Alcraft in 2002 and it still looks fairly fresh. Great vieos.
Get a locking gate and close it when you are spraying. That will kindly keep interuptions out. ; )
Hi. You say the 545 gets mixed 1:1. What is it mixed with?
Fishingologist you can either use 10% cold cure or upto 20% t0006 reducer, I tend to not reduce for build from the primer
Fishingologist it's 1 part 545 base either white or grey then 545 convertor
Looks great. can't wait for the next video!
I can't help but be curious how much something like this would cost....
I know this is a stupid question but is awlcraft considered gelcoat?
Not a stupid question :-) ! Awlcraft is a type of paint made by Awlgrip whereas gelcoat is a polyester based coating that *CAN* look similar to paint but they are two very different materials. Hope this helps!
Where can I find a materials list for the Awlgrip paint, I want to paint my fiberglass camper. Thanks
Really best thing would be to read their application guide. This will outline the materials you need based on how you intend to apply the material. www.awlgrip.com/prodlit/applicationguide.pdf

Beautiful
As a automotive painter I always take a airshot to look at pattern, fan and volume. I've made the same mistake too many times..
Can anyone suggest a good spray gun for over all work? (gelcoat, topcoat, clear coat, primer, etc)
Yeah
Looking awesome.
Question: How come you do not do the gel coat in the mold before you are laying fiberglass? Like when they do boat molds?
Love your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Keep the videos coming. :)
He did not mold these pieces. He’s spraying paint too not gel coat.
Awesome job dude
Did you scuff the primer before you lade down the first coat of paint?
Yes, I sanded it down with 400 grit :-) Lots of sanding!!
BoatworksToday Thanks Andy, I've learned quite a bit from watching your videos thank you.
David Carr *
The older I get the more I realize how much I learn on my projects by the mistakes I've made along the way.
mistakes is the best way to learn, this is true everywhere.
Sweet
great video
Hang a sign out when your busy like that stating something like:
"Sorry crucial process underway"
" No entry".
you know it easy to fix youc put filler on and start to wet sand it with180 grit , but be carful doing it
Jeepers. Fabulous skill.
nice thanks
I thought you were going to say you didn't use the hardener 😂
I am sure someone has ask this before....what does a job like this cost?
You need a doorbell and a sign "If the lights are on please ring the bell and wait"
I know what it's like to have your train of thought interrupted . Lock the door, hang a sign outside " SPRAYING PAINT , CAN'T STOP , COMEBACK AT ?:00 O'CLOCK " and if they can understand that... too bad .
What about inside of the hatch for entering the boat? Was only outside cracked?
The inside of the hatch is not visible at all as it rests on the deck. The cracks are only a concern cosmetically from the exterior :-)
If I were a millionare, I would send a ticket over so you could come and help Mads. I would love to see you to work together :-)
I always test shoot lol.
Great video! That said, do yourself a favor and PROTECT THOSE EYES against that stuff when you're spraying...a full face mask with multiple saran wrap peels will save your eyes!
I have to tell people I don't have time to talk, in a boat yard I wouldn't get anything done everyone wants to talk and has a better way!
Da Vinci overpainted some of his mistakes, its one of those things!
Damn it, Mike! Jk,ha...
That just happens when you are a one man show.
