  • Should you buy Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition? Obviously I recommend Aoe2! But how does Aoe2 DE compare to previous versions? This Game Review is intended for who haven't played Age of Empires II in a while. In this Game Review of Aoe II DE, I go over the new features and a comparison to Aoe2 HD. I will post major patches on Twitter.
    This is a review of major confirmed confirmed gameplay improvements, 4 new civilizations (Bulgarians, Cumans, Lithuanians, Tatars), new features, improved new AI, and my opinion of the entire game on release. AoE 2 DE is a complete remaster of the original Age of Empires 2. This video contains full match gameplay, showcases the new graphics, the multiplayer with dedicated servers, the remastered soundtrack, comparisons to the original and Aoe2 HD and an in-depth overview of the Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition features. This project took so much work to produce so I really appreciate the support. Thank you as always.

    I really hope you all enjoyed this review. It was so much work with so little time which is why I focused on the writing and had less footage than I'd normally want. I am exhausted. I think it turned out well though. Next video is on something else, probably Pokemon Sword & Shield but I need a bit of time to relax and beat the game first. Expect me to stream it this weekend!

    But are the sheep sounds as crisp sounding as the original tho?
    It's not a real AoE experience if I can't spam the right click and make a simple melody with their baahs.

    I couldn't agree more about the new campaign voice lines. The original dialogue really made you feel involved in the campaign and was very memorable. I can't help but feel the new dialogue is a little flat without any urgency and is somewhat uninteresting.
    Overall really happy with the game though and crazy to think that a game that I got when I was 5 is still thriving.
    Cheers mate!

    I would really enjoy a full audio revert mod for campaign. I think the DE audio is actually pretty good, but it still doesn't hit the same as the old voices. But I feel like audio plays a bigger part with that than visual. For example, in 20 years when they remake the LOTR trilogy, im sure the actors will LOOK fine, the scenes could play out fine. But the 1 aspect that will be EXTREMELY hard for my mind to get around, is the different voices. HEARING Gandalf in a different voice. Or Bilbo. Maybe it's just me.
    Edit - I honestly love the new building animations. It gives me a lot of city builder vibes I didn't get from HD or Conquerors.

    I really liked this review! I enjoyed the overall slower pacing because it gives me time to form my own opinion about the things you mentioned. I especially liked the part where you compared the campaign narration side by side as stuff like that is most often highly personal opinion. Overall a very positive review about a game that at the moment only has 76% positive reviews (compare that to HD which has quite some issues with multiplayer, AI and other things as we all know) even though it had a closed beta and so much hype generated towards launch while also being the game of this franchise where the nostalgia filter is the biggest. In my opinion you pointed out all the good things and bad things in need of improvement with providing clues how to fix them, so it leaves the impression that AoE2DE can indeed be a great remaster if given a bit more time and patches by the developers!

    I totally agree with you: i'm totally for a "toggle all the things". It's supposed to be the "Definitive Edition" after all. Which means it'd be really great if it contained the complete experience of Age of Empires, both the classic and modern ones, both on visuals and sound.

    • @Resonance22Channel
      @Resonance22Channel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks Julianoe! Yeah I agree completely. I think a true Definitive Edition needs to contain the complete experience of Age of Empires as you said and that means both classic and modern. Even at least the ability to toggle on and off expansions since there so many. The game has very few classic options at release.

      Thanks Tocaraca as always man. Like I say in the review, some of these will be all positives for people so I was very fair. :) But for some people, it may be a reason to stick to Aoe2 HD unless more options are added (hopefully!). Aoe1 DE had a classic mode and Aoe2 HD had a classic mode and also expansions to toggle on and off. Here we have very little. No classic sounds narration or voices or even classic campaign design, among other things. Aoe2 HD is also compatible with Wololokingdoms and Userpatch 1.5 which provide almost all of the features in DE. I will personally keep a close eye on patch notes and post major updates to my Twitter/FB.

    Thank you for putting succintly how i've been feeling about this game.
    While some of the graphics looks stunning (as in MY EYES MY EYES IT BURNS AAAAAAAH) it's a pity the game is plagued by server outages, stuttering and lag. Why microsoft would release a game with so many problems I don't know it's probably for monetary reasons. I hope they fix it because it was really hyped up.
    While not as bad as HD on release or patch 4.0...this game has a long way to go to meet the high standards we can expect from a AAA title... (well not 2019 AAA but you know what i mean).
    Anyway, Thank you for being truthful about the state of things i've seen too many reviews that are too optimistic and it's good to have a dose of reality now and again.
    good luck with your other projects :)

      Thanks DaNiderlander! I really agree about the graphics. If you turn everything on it is almost impossible to read, especially with more units on the field. In my opinion the bloom, filters, and post-processing is excessive and bloom does not belong in Aoe2. I worked hard to provide an actually honest review of the game and I am glad that people appreciate it.

    Stellar review and definitely agree. This was a game that they needed to approach very carefully and even though they didn't change too much they still went a bit too far. And honestly, the old campaigns did NOT need new VA. All the bugfixes and improvements are welcome however, I only hope that they improve performance by a large margin. Currently it runs pretty bad.

  • @TobiasTob1119

    Nice review mate! Showed me perfectly well why I won't be buying AOE2DE in the near future. While I do like the improvements they made, I feel like half of them could've simply been a couple of patches for HD (e.g. the wall-refund). The textures are a nice touch, honestly - but the problem of needing a super pc to play it reasonably well makes it IMHO unbuyable. It's a twenty year old game that's been remastered once already. That shouldn't cost tons of money to play (again) on good specs. Not sure how I feel about voice acting changes. Which reminds me: Did they change all the sounds and voice acting, or just the campaign stuff? Not sure if you mentioned it.. anyway. Great review, cheers for the hard work!

    • @Resonance22Channel
      @Resonance22Channel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks Jinx! Yeah I've tried to be as far as possible to the game as a reviewer, since some changes are subjective, but as you say it is a hard-sell because quality-of-life improvements like the wall refund etc, can be updated via official or fan-patches. Many of these features have. They changed most of the sounds, not all of the unit voices, but changed all campaign units (eg: Sieur de Metz) and campaign voices/narrators. I think the game could benefit from more classic options across the board. Cheers Jinx, I worked so hard on this so I appreciate the thoughtful comment.

      Original AoE2 programmers had to use quite a bit of ingenuity to make multiplayer work over modems of the time. Today everyone has broadband and dozens gigs of ram, right? Why bother optimizing anything? New, more powerful hardware needs to be sold after all.

    Never really played AoE2 but I played the hell out of AoE3. I love RTS games and made my bones on the C&C series. I was put off AoE2 because I first played it on a console, yes, it was released on the PS2 and I hated it ever since. Because of that bad experience I always disliked the look of AoE2. Everything just looked a bit low quality, even for the time. I mean, C&C Red Alert looked better graphically in my opinion. The remaster of AoE2 looks amazing. I cant believe they actually did a remaster on this level. It's downloading now on Steam. I was swayed by the content and the learning aspect of the game as well. I love games that actually teach you real history as you play. I also bought it because I want to support the concept of remastering sprite based 2D games. Keeping these old games alive is really important for gaming. RTS games over the past decade have been severely lacking. The quality and the amount of content in these old games puts many modern games to shame. Keep the past alive and purchase this game.

    The graphics are great, but to me they are lower priority then the fixes they should make.
    Here is my brief list of things that could be options:
    Villagers should stay on their side of the wall, should not open the gate when they are done, the gate should be locked by default.
    Trebuchet should not line up and go in the opposite direction when you move them.
    Make it easier to know if you're putting consecutive wall foundations down, including over hills.
    Eliminate the bug where some units can cross through foundations that are on hills.
    I still have a monk bug, there's sometimes the monk will stand still and not move.
    automate the deselection of a unit if you have successfully told him where to go, but do not deselect if you did not successfully tell him where to go (the game has it backwards).
    When a unit exits a building it should do so to the closest point of a mouse.
    I'm sure others have their own lists you can go to the website and read them I'm not sure why the developers chose not to do these things and instead focus on graphics.
    They did add a grid and auto receding farms which is great.

    Never played this game, but very interested. Two questions: a) Is the AI in AoE2 Def Ed a worthy opponent? I like a challenge. If the AI is predictable and easy to overcome it gets boring no matter how good the graphics. I would eventually prefer to play against other humans but will need to hone my skills against the AI first and given the limited availability of human opponents will probably mostly play against the AI in general. So it needs to be good. Is the AI in the original AoE2/ HD versions better? b) Is it true AoE2 Def Ed requires a lot of RAM? If AoE2 Def Ed is worth it i'll get the required RAM. Or am i better off playing the original Ao2 or maybe the HD version for a better AI opponent and less RAM requirement. Thanks to any vets for answers!

      Hi Sandor. Yeah I talk about it a few times in the video, hinting that the PC specs are very high and team games have performance issues. It's unfortunate and you're right. I hope that they patch that soon as it will really limit how many people can actually play the game. This is why I think it's important to provide an honest review and not just heap only praises, this game does have performance issues. Hope they get patched. :)

You and any fans can help fund future development of ResonanceBot on www.patreon.com/Resonance22. You can also get involved with development that way. I have bills to pay now and coding is incredibly time-intensive, so any support on Patreon (even $2) is really appreciated! Likewise if your friends are fans of my AI, please spread the word. Re: new campaign VO. The one that really disappointed me was the Aztec campaign, especially since I know it so well from the Conquerors demo. Compare the line: "... my uncle, Montezuma, Emperor of the Aztecs, sent his reply." In the original, the voice actor sounds awed by Montezuma's rank. The new voice actor sounds like he's reading a shopping list. Sure, the accent's less cartoony, but I'm not sure it's worth it.

    For me, this game is basically 100% improvement in virtually every way. In HD I constantly had issues with latency for unit commands when I'd play friends online, now I don't have any of those issues. The quality of life changes make the game feel much much much better and just so much more enjoyable to play. With the new unit models I no longer have issues seeing my units, where as in HD I constantly had issues seeing units on screen because they were so small with very little color and detail making them blend with the map. The game runs smoother overall as well. I've only run the William Wallace campaign so far, I plan on going through them all eventually, but it was just as fun as I remember back on CD when I would play the old Age of Kings campaigns a couple times a month.
    To me also, I find that DE has captured my nostalgia entirely still. The game very much looks and feels like AoE2. This game was essentially everything I could have wanted, and I really would not shed a single tear if it killed every other version of AoE2, I just see no reason to ever go back to HD.

      Hi PK. Unfortunately there is no cross-multiplayer between the HD Edition and Definitive Edition. What platform you choose to play on will depend on some of the things I discuss in the video and what's important to you specifically. The HD Edition is compatible with the fan-made Userpatch 1.5 through WololoKingdoms patch (easy to download), which provides actually almost all of the same features as DE. But DE has 4 new civs, new graphics, 3 new campaigns, a new game mode, and a few other fancy things. I hope that helps :)

    Τhe review is well structured but most issues you mention except from performance are 'nostalgia' issues. Scotland's campaign voiceovers feature much more passion and anger towards invaders than the passive old one. I am sorry, but you present your nostalgia as issues, which are not real problems. AOE2DE might have performance issues but gameplay wise its the best version of AOE2, by a long mile. QOL and balance changes are top notch and the new civilizations are great. Regardless, the review is very good, but it falls in the vicious cycle of nostalgia at some points.

That gives it an identical featureset and even better optimization.

      It looks like to me that they tried to move the game more towards realism. You can seen that both when it comes to the graphics and the voice acting. Talking about VA, the original was great because it carried a lot of emotion while being a bit over the top, while the new one seems to be more serious in tone. I agree that it is really bad and also thinks that it saps the strength out of the narrative. Funny how the VA for The Rajas and African expac were also pretty bad but they still insisted on revamping ALL of the lines.

  • @Grykes33
    @Grykes33 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think the game is a bit of a let down. It really feels like the developers added some new meshes for graphics, added a couple more buttons and races but made little to no changes to how fluid the mechanics could be or the content.
    It feels like AOE 2 with a patch, and not a new updated modern game.

      Hi Owen. At release, the game is more than slightly demanding. Since I know some people would be offended by harsher criticism, I deliberately kept my review more mild. I think you'd run into some performance issues there but I'm not sure. Maybe someone else with similar specs can chime in? It seems like there are almost always performance issues on larger maps with more players. The big issue is that the game runs only on 1 single core. I expect this to be improved over time in upcoming patches so definitely keep an eye on patch notes. :)

    The game has seen a ton of improvements, new QoL features and the new content is good. I just couldn't stand the terrible performance. I don't think it's acceptable for a game in 2019 to run on a single core when the whole CPU market is going after more and more cores with each generation of new CPUs. That's why i asked for a refund. The optimization of this game is just so bad. I am extremely disappointed. Once again, microsoft has pulled a scam on their fans, rushing and releasing an unfinished product which will very likely never get to the point where it should really be, just because they are impatient to milk their cow and keep monetizing the amazing job Ensemble Studios did 20 years ago. I have run the benchmark and i got 15 fps with my CPU at 38%, my GPU at 32% and my RAM at 14/16 (of which 12 were for AoE2 alone) on a monitor that is not even FullHD. Ridicolous. I'll consider buying it again if performance sees some serious improvements, otherwise i'm done with it for good. I do not recommend it at the current stage, unless you have a high end PC. The result will be disappointing nonetheless.

      @Jarl William Ok, if you insist AOE 2 is such a legendary game. I want to ask you a question: what is the size of the population in the AOE 2 community? Perhaps it is 10 ,000. How long do top players practice in a day? How many hours do top players practice in a week? Who are the top 10 players in the last 10 years? Are they the same players all over in these 10 years? How often and how much is the tournament's prize money? All these answers sum up. We get the final answer is: AOE 2 doesn't mean the standard of esport. Like the others say AOE 4 WILL NOT surpass AOE 2. This is a joke. You just want AOE brand to be around 10,000 players forever or you want to have a new game which will attract (maybe a quarter of millions out there). You people are narrow minded, just a short sighted fools.
