Very good point. A lot of not very smart people will like to say that Saddam was an American ally before he invaded Kuwait (and even then, they'll usually make it out like Saddam was threatening US oil interests by doing that), but the fact of the matter is that he was a lot more friendly to Moscow than he ever was to DC. The only reason we backed him in the Iran-Iraq War is because we hated Khomeini more than we hated Saddam.
I genuinely believe one reason so many countries committed so hard to the coalition is because they didn’t have much else to do, like the Cold War was basically over the west was increasingly hegemonic and so didn’t really have any active enemy to fight so when a sovereign state was invaded it was a chance to use some of that Cold War build up to use, since there was nothing else really occupying internal attention restoring Kuwait, protecting the oil supply from Iraq and asserting the new international order was a good reason to commit
