Bonne année! Happy New Year, everyone! This old recording of Ô Canada was recorded in 1918, and cleaned up a bit by me. If you don't speak French, make sure to turn on the TH-cam English subtitles, as the French lyrics to Ô Canada are completely different (and better) to the English lyrics. 1:34 Fourth verse *Read more* (English version) Ruler supreme, who hearest humble prayer, Hold our Dominion within thy loving care; Help us to find, O God, in thee A lasting, rich reward, As waiting for the better Day, We ever stand on guard.
I wonder if there will ever be a full modern version with all the parts. I doubt it since the whole anthem is quite incompatible with current ideologies, but it would be very nice. Also, the CAQ political party are a bunch of fools for removing the Crucifix (That we see at the end of the video) at the Assemblée, especially since the room is full of Anglican symbols.
What surprised me was how royalist these lyrics are with their references to Canadians' loyalty to "le trone" and "le roi". Were French-Canadians big supporters of the British monarchy in 1880, or was their loyalty still to the House of Bourbon which they hoped to see restored in France?
Before the Quiet Revolution, I'd say that most French Canadians were moderate supporters of the monarchy. It was common to find both a picture of the Pope and the King in offices, and other public spaces. Obviously they weren't as passionate as the Anglo-Canadians when it came to the royal family, however the French-Canadians mostly respected the Crown, and saw it as a defender of their religious rights (since the 1774 Quebec Act) and their freedoms. As for your second question, French-Canada had already been separate from France for more than 100 years at that point, and France had radically changed, so a certain distinctiveness grew between France and the French-Canadians. As a result, French-Canadians, who mostly looked inward, were too distant from the Bourbons at that point in time, and were happy enough with the British Crown.
The first line of the second verse referring to "Sacred Love of the Throne and the Alter" seems to me to be a direct comparison with the first line of the second verse of the Marseillaise which starts with "Sacred Love of the Nation".
French canadian were safe because we were on British Monarchy and not on the satanic french revolution. We were not a great supporters of the British monarchy but it was better and far better than to be on the rule of the french revolution. And last thing, the history is not over. A lot of french catholic prophecies said and affirme that a last great catholic french monarch will appear soon and he will take back Canada and Us and he will rule Europe and America with catholic laws by the Holy Spirit. This is soon to happen.
@@fredleung616 The throne represent the king of the Dominion of Canada : Jesus-Christ and the Altar : The Altar is in all the catholic church where Jesus is in the tabernacle real flesh of Jesus-Christ in the Eucharist.
Yet no one is clamering to change the lyrics of the french version. We English Canadians need to stand up for our culture and tell the elites to go pound sand.

One of the most blatant cultural appropriations is the crime against Québec by the federal goverment, which stole the music of O Canada but wrote new lyrics, setting aside the original words. The result is that the National Anthem of Canada is one music and two completely different sets of words. The English version is NOT a translation of the original. Even the name of the country Canada was stolen from the French people who came here hundreds os years before the English and called themselves "Canadians" or in the vernacular "Canayens".
English stole a lot, even their "anthem" God save the King is a plagia... I mean an hommage of Louis XIV 's recovery of his anal fistula. The real canadians are the french canadiens. They were the first to called themselves "Canadiens" (from "Kanata") as a whole, attached to their land as an identity. English destroyed the Acadien and stole canadian identity. "Quebequois" is only the deformation of the word used by the english "Quebekers" meaning "french and catholic". Je me souviens !
Englishman caused a lot of problems in many parts of the world. We know throughout history about their brutal treatment of people they colonised, enslaved and exploited. The British Crown is just a gong show and nothing else. They took over the house of Hanover and created The House of Windsor. Robbed many countries and they don't even treat their own people well. They interfered with political circumstances of many countries and made problems for people to secure their own interests. Nobody cares about their fake king anymore. The Commonwealth countries are slowly breaking away and living without the Crown 'protection'. They never protected them well anyhow. It was all about interests of England but not about other parts of the world. French have much nicer culture and didn't bother other nations much after they stopped their colonisation and conquering. French have much better music, culture, food, vine. Not like Beatles and Spice Girls. Not much of English music appeals to me at all. There are nice English people but the monarchs and politicians are Freemasons and not good. I have once heard the French-Canadian anthem with different words than "O Canada". It's much more beautiful and meaningful yet powerful. Music better too. Quebec should have separated. Canada is bound to fall apart one day just like the rest Commonwealth. Everything created by Freemasons is made to be disassembled one day. They have caused a lot of evil in the world and still are doing it.
