- Apologies about yesterday upload... But today we have a common issue with VAG's throttle body fault code P0121 its a 6 month old video that i didn't like but i hope it helps...cheers

This help me out with my 2012 170 Superb DSG L&K, same fault code, the mechanic kept resetting it, until I basically ordered him, to take the throttle body off and cleaned it out. It was caked in carbon and crap. Cleaned up like new before refitting. Many thanks for the video.

Thanks for the video, done mine this morning after getting this code yesterday, can of brake cleaner and an old toothbrush, cleaned it up pretty good.
Only driven it a few miles since, so time will tell, but already the hesitation when switching engine off has gone, result!

Amy chance of an additional short video or even a link ( advice on how to open tight fittings/ tools needed and whete I can get that diagnostic thingy) as I want to do this job on my Passat CC auto .Am being quoted extortionate prices and I want to be able to fix this sort of prob myself. Hello you did a good job In short video for me it take about 2 hours start to finish but you forgot to clean pipe its a lot worse usually, and after cleaning and removing right way to do is to run adaptation of throttle body.

that helped me with my 2014 passat alltrack - and intake system looks absolutely the same here :) ! unfortunately I dropped the bolt right into the tube (facepalm) - had to lift the car and unscrew the tube from the bottom.
the only think I think you may have missed is running throttle adaptation. But that happens automatically after you drive for some period of time

Hi, just a tip you should also clean the throat of the small silver egr pipe above the shut off valve/throttle body as you call it.As this will also be caked up with soot also.In my experience of ten years ownership of this type of engine

@@jwracingteam this valve works as an anti shudder valve too. so when you turn ur engine off it doesn't stop so abruptly. Makes for a smoother switch off. I can always tell when mine requires a strip and clean as the engine judders on switch off 👍

Fantastic and very helpful video. Cleaned the throttle body on our 2.0 Yeti this evening, took about 2 hours including turning the thing with the cut out to make it face up instead of down. It was really clogged but carb cleaner, screwdrivers and s toothbrush soon sorted it. The car is transformed. Pulls brilliant and runs really smooth, feels like it's breathing properly now. Really appreciate you posting this, thanks!

Same code came up on my VW golf, was thinking I had to buy a new sensor! Just needs a clean I take it
Is that down to driving around the town all the time clogging up or poor matainance meaning cheap oils used every time a vw is serviced. I have a 2007 vw Jetta TDI bxe engine code with 98000 miles on it I was wondering should I check and clean mine. There is no codes or lights on and it drives perfect should I bother looking at it.
Did my VW Passat estate today only problem was putting the pipe bk on which was a real bitch thanks for this video saved a lot of hassle
Not sure what's going on I put new throttle body it's doing the same thing and same codes comes up p0121 and p2101

Was your car on limp mode when you got the glow light flashing mine just happened and I just opened it and it’s clogged badly like just a small hole and the middle flap didn’t move much now I’m cleaning it and hopefully it goes off limp mode

Have this same issue throttle body was clean it was replaced not very long ago so not sure why it’s still throwing this code now car is in limp mode can’t figure it out

Holy cow that's a lot of gunk! I've only ever seen one that bad before and I think it could have been you too? Definitely a Skoda. Possibly the same car? 👍😂😂😂

Hey is p0221 the same as this code?
I cleaned my 1.33 petrol Auris with 210k km and it wasn't even dirty so i didn't remove it from the intake manifold . Instead i used Wurth tb & intake cleaner while engine was off and cold but that was probably wrong cause when i turned the engine on all the residue that fell in made the car to rev high and exhaust had a lot of smoke.
TheAlexunit there are some products that says that you can do it with the throttle body in situ but I really prefer to remove it to be safe cheers 👍👍👍
Cars Exposed At least i didn't touch the throttle body cause they say you might damage it if it's electronic...i had a friend pressing the gas pedal and cleaned it this way.
Car feels a lot better in idle or when i let the gas off while in gear.TB was never been cleaned before.

@@CarsExposed this is the throttle body isnt it...i was told the egr is at the back of the engine towards bulkhead near the turbo?
@@moshazza5684 that’s right ... the EGR is at the back of the engine a pain of a job 😔
I had the same problem, went to the dealer. Do you need to also re calibrate the throttle body with the computer?
Hello mate, in this case I didn’t need to but an unleaded would need to be re calibrated 👍

Garga Vall Hi. I removed mine and cleaned it. Disconnected the battery for 30 mins went into learn mode. Drive for while different styles fast slow etc. Worked for me. Good luck.
In my case here wasn’t needed but a gasoline one would need calibration 👍
Not necessary but 100% recommended to do adoptation
Hi I've just followed your video, put it back on the car but the pipe that connects to it wont want to go on , is there a knack to it ?
luke terry nit really a hack but make sure you loose the holding clip enough for the pipe to go on, it’s a bit of a tight space and the pipe isn’t that flexible but it will go on 👍👍👍
@@CarsExposed ah ok , yea I've loosened the bottom one off completely in fact I've taken it off as I thought it was stopping the pipe from going on , and the top one is loose too but might take that one off and see if it makes a difference. Is there a reason why you put the valve on first ? As the attempt at putting it back together I put the pipe on first but then couldn't get the pipe on the valve so then took the pipe off and put the valve on first but now cant get the pipe on the valve lol . But thank you for your reply, much appreciated
i took mine off today to clean, wasnt too badly coked up but i noticed it sticks in the closed position...if this happens would it be the cause of car not starting and cutting out too at junction. ? also is there any way to test it because i plugged it into the car plug while off the car and nothing, started car...revved it and no response from throtle...if the flap doesnt move is it faulty?
If its getting stuck closed its most likely the problem , now the "throttle body" in the diesel car only closes when you are turning the car off and another few situations but its open most of the time..

hey mate, great video, i have a skoda superb 2.0 tdi s 2012 cffb engine. had this issue twice now. how often do you recommend cleaning it (last time i done it was april last year. i have a new issue with car now as the other day it clonked out on me wouldnt re start. got it started with easy start. drove ok for half a mile and parked it up. went to start it again few hours later and again same thing. i didnt have any warning lights on like before but i read the code and its p0121 too. if this throttle is clogged again...and getting stuck closed position can it cause the car to stall and not re start ?
I use to clean it every year 60k miles because it was a taxi , if it gets stuck close the car will definitely stall and it shouldn’t start 👍

It didn't go so well I will finish it in 2 days here in America the 2.0 have a metal intake manifold not like that car you worked on which is a plastic style also directly under the egr is the intercooler which is blocking the throttle body bolts so I will put it on my car ram an pull the intercooler and then the egr the euro 2.0 you worked on is way easier

I have an A3 CFFB with 236k km (around 135-140k miles) on her and I was wondering, could this dirty sticky throttle body cause an engine metallic rattle and vibration at shutoff? I can also hear it sometimes knock after I turn the engine off, like it knocks quickly for 5-6seconds and then it stops. DMF is brand new, EGR was replaced new at 220k km, about 10k miles ago, but as far as I know she's never had a throttle body cleaning job and I'm thinking of doing that these days.

Hello, i have same fault, my car start throw black smokes and are a bit laggy when i accelerate also there is not much power like before.
Should i clean or change it ? Do my syphtoms are the same?
cleaning it should be ok, similar but we normally don get loss of power or lagness

Got a mk6 golf gt tdi 140 with that same error code on 62k. Hope this fixes it
It could be anything related to the throttle body/pedal etc... but I would definitely try that first I’ve seen it to many times 👍👍👍

got this error code on my VW caddy 2.0 TDI. I clean the throttle body. do I need to clean the plastic attached to the throttle body?
No just the inside where the moving plate is 👍

@@CarsExposed I have a superb cr170 and it's doing some ridiculous juddering at times . Its like some startups are bad and it runs like a tractor. Other times it runs sweet as a nut. What kind of symptoms have you had with failing egrs? I have a feeling mine is on its way out. I've got a brand new clutch and flywheel so it ain't that.

things that are supposed to help ecology are ruining the engines and after all the nature as well.. dpf, egr, plastic engine parts. Why? bcs cleaning, impacted fuel economy, new replacement parts, harsh cleaning detergents like Acetone...

I keep getting egr inserfcent flow and theottle body corcuit open i have cleaned them spotless can you shed any light? 2.0 tdi bkd engine
John Hathway did you try an active test ? I would try to command the throttle body with the scan tool, it sounds like a circuit integrity issue.
I only have a basic obd scanner throttle body was not ab issue untill i removed the egr and throttle body put them back on the car spotless then next day 2 codes and engine now idles at 1k rpm with eml lit no limp mode though and no throtel difference do you have social media ie facebook i could chat to you on?

Aayush Arora There are some companies that do mileage correction if you ever replace a cluster or something like that I don’t do them ...

Sorry for the delay mate, exhaust gases recirculation issues the motor isn’t that efficient anymore with almost 400k miles ...👍👍👍
