I have a very similar routine, but I figured out that if I do my exfoliation the first night, my tretinoin is more effective and I'm not treating dead skin cells. It made a decent difference, just swapping the order of my cycle to exfoliate, treat, and then 2 nights off (both with rose hip oil, because my skin loves it).

Same! My skin is super sensitive and prone to dryness and dehydration…and acne. I thought adapalene would be too drying, just because it’s an acne treatment. But I have tolerated it so incredibly well. I absolutely love it. My dermatologist has even given me the prescription strength (0.3% here in the US), which is really giving me some anti-aging benefits, although I can only tolerate it twice a week so far (with 0.1% the other nights).

  • @Espritlumiere

I think there's a lot of confusion online about dehydrated skin vs dry skin. You can have dehydrated skin at any time alongside dry, oily or combo skin. My skin is chronically dehydrated when I'm oily and dry, I empathise with the struggle!
If I didn't know better, after hearing about the products you use, I would've guessed you had oily or dry skin with no dehydration, so something must be working 😅
Here's some info that might help or might help anyone reading along ☺️
Dehydrated skin has trouble holding onto water and needs more humectants, while also needing occlusives to then seal all that hydration in.
Dry skin has trouble producing enough oils within the skin and needs emollients and moisturising ingredients to fill in the "cracks" within the skin and smooth out the flakiness.
The best, most gentle cleanser I've ever used is the Isntree Yam Root Cream Cleanser. It's so moisturising and just lovely.
Unfortunately, the SkinFix moisturiser has no occlusives and is very much NOT suited for true dehydrated skin, unless you're using an occlusive moisturiser on top of it. I'm sure you also already know this, but that moisturiser also contains both a PHA and AHA, so maybe that's why you're not able to tolerate tret more often?
The literature on Tretinoin actually shows that using a lower dose like 0.025-0.05% 3-4 times a week gives the same results as using a higher dose every night!
Many people with dehydrated skin also can't tolerate much HA products or products with nano HA, because it's just not a good humectant. I'd highly recommend ditching dedicated HA products and switching to products with better humectants like glycerin, panthenol and urea.
My recommendation with snail mucin is to use it after hydrating essences/toners and serums, but before creamy serums/emulsions and moisturisers. Using snail mucin after just a mist was torture on my dehydrated skin 😅
Luckily I've only ever had snail mucin pill when I haven't used enough humectants in my routine.

You raise so many good points. However (would you believe), dehydrated skin and dry skin are actually the same thing on a scientific level. Dr Dray talks about it from a medical standpoint in this video:
      th-cam.com/video/AIhQPu3ZmPk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tYSlzc5tUgldF7L5
I was very surprised too. The water (hydration) vs oil thing is a common myth! I hope people watch this video and share their thoughts because I was very intrigued.

    • @Piecesoftheshadow
      @Piecesoftheshadow หลายเดือนก่อน +3

So what top products do you recommend for someone with dehydrated skin? Toners and serums and all that? I’m almost 40 and am also trying to combat aging. My skin is a little oily in some areas and dry in certain other places but overall the skin is dehydrated and I never know how to balance all of that :/

  • @teri2466
    @teri2466 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

It's so tough to figure out the right balance. The environment changes between seasons, our skin changes. Breaks are good. I use "recovery" products without actives when I need to get my skin barrier back in shape. The best recovery products contain glycerin, ceramides, cholesterol, linoleic acid, urea (or some of these at least).
Dr. Idriss stresses consistency over quantity with actives. 3 x week is great for tretinoin if you can be consistent that way. Using actives too often can cause inflammation, which you want to avoid.

thank you so much for this video! I think this is the first time that i find someone that has the same skin issues as me, has a very similar routine, love similar and the same products, and have the same ideas about patience and taking things slow. I often find that navigating the skincare space online is just overwhelming with my sensitive skin and all of it's issues, so seeing you advocate for slowness and patience, a minimal routine, and hydration is just perfection.

Tip: you don't have to purchase lotions that say they are specifically for your face. Most can be used on face and body - but the face formulations tend to be lighter so they don't wear well under make up and might be too greasy for daytime. I also wouldn't use anything with fragrance in it. I use them only at night and they work great and MUCH more cost effective than moisturizers marketed as for your face. So I use cetaphil and eucerin with 5% urea.
    1. winter moisturizer - cetaphil green tub "heavy moisturizer", personally find the niacinamide in cerave irritates my skin in winter on tretinoin; again this isn't marketed specifically for the face but is great for night time!
    2. summer moisturizer, or sometimes I use it first as a tretinoin sandwich (moisturizer - tret - heavier moisturizer on top) if my skin is feeling dry - eucerin 5% urea (urea is extremely hydration at 5% concentration, >10% it is more exfoliating and would not use that on my face but is great for legs and feet)
    3. HOLY GRAIL - La roche posay cicaplast B5 Baume - I use this every night on top of my moisturizer a small pea sized amount spread thinly over the face; cica is great for calming/soothing the skin, this has some moisturizing properties and is a wonderful occlusive to prevent evaporation of water from the skin - recommend you try this out as a last step to your routine after your moisturizer!! absolute game changer once I started tretinoin.

I also use benzoyl peroxide at 10% concentration to treat my rosacea, applying it three times a week. Salicylic acid doesn’t work for me; it just makes my skin incredibly sensitive. My weekly skincare routine includes vitamin C, azelaic acid, peptides, and retinol-sunscreen is also a must. I grew up in New Hampshire where the sun is basically not seen for half the year and weaksauce the rest of the year, but after 25 years in SoCal, my number one regret is not slathering sunscreen on my neck, chest, and hands. Shortly after age 40, a bunch of brown spots popped out on my chest, and wow, it was downhilll aging so fast from there. I did protect my face because of my damn melasma, which is SOOOOOO sensitive to sun exposure that it taught me how effective sunscreens really are. My longtime HG Shiseido mineral SPF 50+ has gone out of stock, and I'm at a loss. Maybe it's time to try Haruharu....
According to my melasma, not all sunscreens are equally protective against photoaging/brown spots even when their SPF numbers are the same, so normally I test a new sunscreen on a less important area like forearms or ankles (especially after the Honest Beauty fiasco) before I will use it on my face.

The serum is called something like "hyaluronic water essence"; it's got oatmeal extract and like 8 different types of hyaluronic acid. Also has a bit of vitamin c derivative (as sodium ascorbyl hyaluronate). Love love love it. I used to use the toner, then their "Fresh" aloe gel, then the water essence, and it was so hydrating! Still use their toner and aloe gel, but I've switch to their bifida ampoule since it has peptides.

The brand says it's best for Vitamin A, AHA/BHA users, easily reactive, dry, and sensitized skins. If you want a cheaper option, The Ordinary has a Glycolipid Cream Cleanser that's $12.50 for 5 Oz. Lastly, if you want a fun powered cream cleanser, Build Skincare has something called B-Wash, which the brand describes as a gentle powder-to-cream facial cleanser that is $20 for 2.47 Oz. They are all so so so good!

I absolutely LOVE the Osea ocean cleanser purifying face wash. It’s $50/bottle, but the travel size bottle literally lasted me 3 months, and that’s like a quarter of the size of the full bottle. Absolutely love it.

I just started tretinoin this week (wish me luck). I am on the cusp of mature skin, but I don't have any acne problems. Maybe three or four pimples a year that are hormonal, but nothing that is worth freaking out about. The tretinoin is about skin tone, texture, and collagen for me. I'm going to take it slow and not wreck my barrier. I am completely sold on azelaic acid, and I've been using it for about six months. That when I am definitely keeping in my routine, because it's the only thing I found that has finally kept my rosacea and redness at bay. I've heard multiple people say that if you can get on azelaic acid first, at prepares your skin to stand up to the tretinoin, so luckily I was already using that for redness. I use the 92 snail mucin also, but oddly enough I haven't found any pilling problems with it. For now that's all I am doing. I wanted to simplify my routine to give tretinoin a chance to get comfortable, and then in a couple months I will reassess again! Thank you for the moisturizer suggestions, that's where I still feel like I'm playing around and not sure yet!

I know its been almost a week so chances you won't see this but its worth a try because the Coats Gentle Hydrating Cleanser is 10/10 TOP TIER!! I have dehydrated, sensitiivveeeee, combo skin that genuinely hates being washed but the Coats cleanser has never done me dirty. I'm about to switch back to it after trying different cleansers for a bit because my skin never looked better than when using the Coats cleanser. It's about $22 from CVS in my area (MA) but it's also on Amazon for a bit cheaper. Another good gel cleanser is the Acwell licorice root no bubbles cleanser. It's super hydrating & gentle but effective in cleansing. The coats cleanser has ceramides in it and the Acwell one doesn't & I do tend prefer to use cleansers with ceramides.

As you had requested, I use Cerave brand developed by dermatologists. I recommend the Cerave cleanser…very gentle, removes makeup and doesn’t strip the skin barrier. The daytime moisturizer is light, just OK. The body cream in a tub is good for the body and, on occasion, on the face…..creamy but not oily. You might be able to get travel size to try it out.

I have been so helped by the rephr heavy duty moisturizer- it scared me because I thought it would be too full on and I would break out but it sinks in beautifully especially under makeup and my skin is way less dehydrated than it was. Oh, I’m so looking forward to watching! I just realized that the reason makeup looks horrible on my skin is because it’s dehydrated 🙄 🙄🙄My experience has been that my skin will look great in terms of moisture, but then the moment I put on foundation, I end up looking crusty and awful. The thing that helped me was the 7 skin method.

I’ve been enjoying the DamDam Mochi Mochi Luminous plumping and hydrating moisturizer. I purchased it at Sephora. I have sensitive dry and dehydrated skin. I haven’t tried any of the other products by DamDam but I noticed they have a kit of trial sizes. Another moisturizer that you might want to try (if you haven’t already) is the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream with Colloidal Oatmeal in the OG formula without added fragrance. I loved the Skinfix original cream. I am ok with the new formula but I have to be careful whenever a product contains niacinamide. Most people love the ingredient but my skin will tolerate only a small amount of niacinamide. Thank you very much for this video.

Loved the video- I read a few cases about the BOJ sunscreen not being effective against melasma, or melasma becoming worse after prolonged use, so I'm a little wary of the effectiveness. Also, I heard amazing things about the Isntree Yam Root cream cleanser. Its pretty affordable as well and their products work amazing on my skin, specifically the mugwort clay mask that absorbs my excess sebum yet somehow soothes my irritation. I'm also prone to congestion but cant handle leave on treatments (they worsen my texture) I resorted to using my leave on actives as a 5-10 minute mask vs. purchasing a cleanser which i found to be a little stripping.

    Hey Alex!!
I loved how in depth you went in this video and I really want to take better care of my skin too, I just don’t know where to start! You know how you do your beginners’ blending eyeshadow tutorials where you just focus on that one thing and explain every little detail, I was thinking it would be super useful for a beginner like me if could you do the same with like a beginners guide to skincare, how to find out about ingredients for your skin, active stuff, moisturisers etc. maybe including some common irritants and how to tell if something is working for you. Perhaps strategies of building a routine from absolute zero (I currently only use a La Roche Posay cleanser, a No7 moisturiser and a skin scrub every other week or so). It would be super duper useful!!
Sending you lots and lots of love,
    Bori ❤️
