I was there for opening hour when the fences were removed for the first time.

Wow ... thank you! I missed the opening of "Overlook Walk," by only a few days. I live in San Francisco, and make an annual AMTRAK voyage to Seattle. I left, for home, on October 4th.
For the last few years, I've been amazed at the updates to the Wharf area, with each visit. I go back to the high-rise freeway. Much has been improved ... in terms of beauty AND access!
The widening of the pedestrian pavilion, around the new aquarium facility, is especially welcoming.
I stay at the Edgewater Hotel, on the Alaskan Highway. I've always walked the the hill, on Wall Street, to Western, then south to Pike's Market. (As a proud San Franciscan, I'm always willing to climb a hill. 😀.) However, the easier "stairway/walkway," which just opened, will be the first thing that I explore, next year.
Hooray! Love to see improvements in Seattle. I’m especially loving the new play areas for kids. That octopus playground looks like it will be awesome 🎉

Looks great. More importantly, the seawall has been updated/fixed. This has been a lengthy, expensive, and arduous process. Awesome that Melinda and Mckenzie chipped in to support the local community.

I was randomly walking in the area around the same time and so was lucky to check it out right after it opened as well. Very happy with the results and I totally agree with you that Seattle really needed a nice gathering area in downtown. This is the perfect location for it, too, with the views and the access to the market and the waterfront walk.

Been watching construction and the final phase of all these projects I'm glad they are for the most part done I love our new waterfront my new place to bring family and just to hang out being a local enjoying the view

Very interesting. I lived in Seattle for 6 months in the late 90's and I remember the Alaskan. Way which really was an eyesore at the waterfront. This is really nice. Might be time for me to take a trip back to Seattle.
It's changed a lot
It was an eyesore from the POV of the waterfront, but man, was that a beautiful drive adjacent to the city.

@@liannebedard5521 Yes, that is true. And on Pike Place you will find the original Starbucks coffee shop. You will have to stand in line though to enter the store. Starbucks are everywhere in Washington State. I am so sick of Starbucks. There are approximately 745 Starbucks stores in Washington State.
I agree, Need’s more greenery and walking areas. Very pretty.
West lake center used to be a square in the middle of the city when Pine street was closed between 4th and 5th, and was really a pleasant place but I think that was during the 1990s and when the traffic returned it ruined it. I moved from Seattle 2 years ago.

pier 58 is new, the old pier collapsed 2020, this spring if I run into you, you can be my guest to the ocean pavilion, this spring , will be doing my rehab walking on the waterfront and the stair case is called the Salish steps, I'll be the gut w/ the cane

FYI- You don’t seem to understand that the tunnel that replaced the viaduct bypasses that section of roadway on the waterfront. All through traffic goes through the tunnel and not on the waterfront.
I understand that. What I don't understand is why they also built a 6 lane road in top that nobody wanted

The pier area still needs much more parking. Instead, there's less than originally. Some just need to go to one shop rather than makinga day of it. All that wasted open space to loiter could be parking! There had been an entire pier dedicated to loitering as a public park but the city condemned that open space. That plus the new stairway park is plenty. We could have the best of both worlds! Crazy. We used to go there to visit but is is more difficult after the remodel as we dont live in the city.

@GeminiWalkandTalk well if you're already there you can do that. Used to be it was an attraction for visitors across the state and that needs more parking, not less.
You're not going to find any big city that offers downtown parking. The idea is to walk, bike or take public transportation, like the light rail in Seattle.
@StanH1966 lots of big cities have downtown parking, even Seattle, until dreamers without a reality check interfered.
The massive elevated highway was replaced by an underground tunnel. The 6 lane road is necessary for local traffic.

I remember this area in the past. The freeway columns (now torn down) obstructed the view and created a space that was very run down and industrial. It was difficult to move from the sidewalk where the presenter is seen, to the city, because there was the road and then all the bridge infrastructure and industrial space. Looks like a whole 'nother city now.

ocean pavilion is amazing, the overlook walk opens out. 4, aquarium to sculpture park be green with trees and pedestrian walk w/ bike trail around the bay across the west seatle bridge to alki biking that would be a nice video, overlook walk, check it out

An overpass made in the brutalist style of architecture. It's like wandering around a penitentiary or especially uninspired community college from the sixties. I live here. It's also going to be a commercial dead zone. They can pay for private security for a while, but eventually that expense will have to be covered somehow (Park Pass Toll?) or parts ceded to the vandalism and squalor surrounding it.
Could have been better, but definitely an improvement. Can't wait to check it out in person. Thanks for this!

I think the concrete (and the steel structure within) is designed to withstand the inevitable earthquake that will strike this area. The prior viaduct would have easily fallen and caused a great deal of destruction and loss of life. Plus the viaduct was pretty ugly and clearly this is better. And the business community would have pitched a fit if they had removed Alaskan Way as a major road option. So a major roadway was carried over to the new waterfront.

Yes, definitely worth a visit. A lot of pedestrian traffic, which is great. Give the waterfront back to the people, not a stacked highway separating Seattle from the waterfront. Great job Seattle!

Seattle’s new Overlook Walk feels like the perfect addition to the city’s waterfront The views are breathtaking, but the question is-does it live up to the hype? If you’re into scenic strolls with a bit of city flavor, it’s definitely worth checking out for yourself

Good video and good commentary. They tore out the old Viaduct (the 2 highways stacked on top of each other) and replaced it with a tunnel and this road. I assume they will add more greenery, and most of it is supposed to be finished in 2025. That is a pier they are replacing over the water.

Gee such harsh criticism of such an amazing development. To expect no cars or access is wild. The knocked down an elevated concrete ugly and made this! It is amazing. If you want disappointment come to Tacoma’s waterfront. We could only dream of having half of this development. Overall live all of it and the vitality. The park is very modern. Active with tons of people.

The problem is thwy faced Backlash from Ferry Commuters about removing all of the Road so they had to keep something for Ferry Access, if there Ferry Terminal wasn't there the road wouldn't need to be there
Also a lot of Local Businesses wouldvw Thrown a Hissy fit because they tend to do that every time there is an Improvement project
the waterfront is not perfect but is a major improvement
My view as well
What most people including yourself fail to understand about there still being an existing road that runs through the waterfront is that there are still businesses that need to have access and there still being a Ferry ⛴️ Terminal that people drive their vehicles off and on to commute to and from the islands.
Also, I don’t understand why there’s an issue with seeing concrete? How else would a big structural overlook and expanded walking and bike path been built or added? There’s plenty of green space waking distance further up near and around Olympic Sculpture Park, Myrtle Edwards Park and beyond.
Business can be walked to, concrete is depressing and ugly. Hope that helps
@@GeminiWalkandTalk but then how would you build a huge structure like overlook without concrete? I think once the trees and plants are mature then most of the concrete will be unnoticeable.

Everyone should check out Northgate State Penitentiary it is free to visit. It’s 7 miles (11.3 kilometers) north of downtown Seattle.
Sorry, it’s real name is North Seattle College. It’s entirely made out of concrete hence the name Northgate State because it resembles a concrete prison built in 1970 and it’s still going strong.

I can assure you Pioneer Square is still very much alive during the day. I don’t know about late at night because I don’t go there at night. It gets especially busy whenever at Lumen Field there is a football game or soccer game or a concert. Sadly there are several storefronts that have For Lease signs on them. And sadly as the price of everything increases those stores will remain empty.
Westlake park is kind of the Seattle's "square"

Without those traffic lanes how are people going to access the waterfront?
On foot and transit and there didn't have to be that many lanes....
@@GeminiWalkandTalk If I’m understand correctly, construction is still in progress and eventually the Alaskan Way traffic lanes will be reduced to just 2 lanes, one in each directions, to reduce speeding and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
They build a tunnel under ground, then they torn down the viaduct.

@@louyht7 Lots. Bring lots of money. Any major U.S.A. city downtown corridor is going to be expansive to stay overnight. At the far north end of downtown Seattle is the Space Needle from the 1962 World’s Fair. At the far south end of downtown is the football stadium and the baseball stadium. It is 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) from the Space Needle to the football stadium. You can easily use Google Maps and click on a link for a downtown Seattle hotel and see the daily prices.

This Guy is only partly right about open spaces. Seattle has Volunteer Park, Woodland Park and Greenlake (3 ) Overhead Freeway Parks , and many many large parks amd open spaces throughout Seattle. He just comes from Europe where most towns a d cities have a town square.
Those places are not in downtown except the freeway park which is small and awkward

Good coverage, horrible design. Dependence on elevators instead of ramps for people in wheelchairs, for anyone with compromised hip/knee joints, on crutches and for parents pushing strollers. Billions spent and still not accessible and still has vast expanses with nowhere to sit in shade or with cover from rain. Good grief.
