  • Daniel Smith Turquoise Watercolors Study / Join me in this color study of four Daniel Smith Turquoise Watercolors. Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Genuine, Amazonite Genuine, Ultramarine Turquoise, and Pthalo Blue Turquoise. I will swatch a value scale and do color mixes with real time reactions. This color study is focused on how these yellows mix with Quinacridone and Pthalo colors, these are the colors I especially love to paint with, and they have a very high tinting/mixing strength so will be good indicators of how these turquoise colors mix in general. Additionally I tried to mix the colors as consistently as my experience level allows, to get a similar range of color mixes for comparisons. I primarily paint with watercolor pours and wet on wet applications so my opinions expressed are reflecting that type of application.

    Instead of PB16, I mix my own..just a touch more towards green, more similar to ultramarine turq...but, I still prefer the mixes with my ready-mix.
    I've got amazonite on order, should get it Mon or Tues. Sleeping beauty turq though is on my main palette..along with about 5 other primateks.
    As I've mentioned before, my late son got me on the Chinese calligraphy and Traditional painting kick over 9 years ago. While I continue to experiment with ways to fuse East & West..i have recently become much more focused on just western materials; often Eastern subjects...and even techniques since I just cant get used to Western brushes.
    While I've never been a fan of shimmery mica paints; after one of my tutors showed me pictures and videos of ancient, 500+yr old paintings that still had a slight natural shimmer from minerals like amethyst and the fuschites....i've almost gone through a whole tube of amethyst. 😂. Granted, I made pans for my daughter and best friend who have joined me on this journey...but I went nuts making mixes! A "magic mix" as my friend calls it, with PY159, (separates into a slightly shimmery, granulating purple + yellow + a touch of grey), another with SB Turquoise that also has separation.
    I received some bronzite yesterday and I'm about to get set up to start searching and mixing!

    Yes! I’m definitely hooked on these videos of you comparing relatively “like” colors and the mixes made from your palette!! I’m with you…. I was blown away by the first two.
    I’d probably go with the Genuine Turquoise if I could pick only one and definitely add Amonizite if I decide to add 2 new colors….
    I was also surprised by the gray! Later, I realized that it leans green and the red you used leans orange..so it’s like mixing opposite colors because of where they fall on color wheel is my best guess…although that may be totally wrong idea….just a thought.
    I LOVED this video!!!
    Thank you for sharing and so happy you were excited as I was!!

    it's really useful to see you do light washes of the mixes. i find that those can be harder to get even distribution with in mixes and it's helpful to see what the colours do when they're watered down.

    Nice comparison. I have a slight obsession for teal/ turquoise pigments and those four are definitely there. Sleeping Beauty is wonderful but pricey- I would also go with Amazonite because its so workable.

      I have fallen for the Amazonite after this study! Added to my palette. So thankful it’s an affordable color. Mark, do you remember if John mentioned either Cerulean or Manganese Blue Hue getting added to the watercolor sticks anytime soon?

    Many artists have experienced the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise going grey! However, many Cobalt Turquoises (PB36) are incredibly similar in hue. Irit Landgraf has a video showing dupes for a selection of paints and the Schminke Cobalt Green Turquoise is an almost exact match. The DS Cobalt Turquoise is slightly brighter and more granulating. I have the Amazonite and after just four months in my lightfastness test it’s already duller. I don’t yet know if the changes have stopped there or if they have continued, the test is still ongoing, but I’ll admit I’m a bit bummed about it.

    • @watercolorpour
      @watercolorpour  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Hannah! I did another video I think it was on the Amazonite where I used it to create greys, will have to find it to share with you. I ended up with good ol Pthalo Turquoise for my palette as it is tried and true and when watered down with a couple of other bits of colors really answered my need for a variable turquoise. That’s too bad about the fade, if you love the color/hue maybe do a layer of Dorlands Cold Wax to seal it? I use it on watercolors that have any lightfast issues, and it makes for a softened finish too, like using a photo to filter. Thank you for sharing will have to check out Irit’s video too 😀😀😀

    • @hannahthufvesson
      @hannahthufvesson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@watercolorpour Huh, I never considered that Dorlands Wax could help with fading issues! Might have to try that for some less than lightfast favourites! I just got a jar of it but have so far only tried in in a sketchbook I have, and it seeps right through the pages (150gsm) so it's a no-go in that one.
      Yeah, I kinda like it, and I do like greys mixed from turquoises, so I might give it a chance later on. Right now though I'm still too sad to be friends with this colour 😂 Thankfully that phase will pass!

      I’ve tried it on 140 pound 100% cotton paper and it seems to only seep through if the paper is aged. I use a heat dryer on it to “set it” which is kinda fun, I rub it on with my fingers or a folded paper towel and then use the heat it dryer, it turns to a liquid and then is dry. Maybe try it on a test sheet first 😅😂 would hate to recommend and then something go wrong

    • @hannahthufvesson
      @hannahthufvesson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@watercolorpour Thank you! That's some golden info! Maybe that's the issue with the paper I have then, or that mine is so much thinner.. 🤔 Or perhaps it's that it's rag paper? Hmm, I will try it on other papers further down the line! And I will for sure remember the heat tool tip! ☺️🙏
