I love videos like this, where we get to see the creative process of "what would happen if.... ?" So often, we see videos that result in a perfect product at the end but we don't get to see all the hours of trying different things that allowed the artist to arrive at that end result. While there is a place for polished how to videos, I think the most beautiful work comes from playing, experimenting and learning through the process and then applying what you've learned to create something unique to the artist. Your video fills that gap perfectly. Two thumbs up!

You are brilliant and brave! Your right we learn more by errors than playing is safe. The key is you take chances that ultimately expand your body of work. Thank you.

I enjoy how experimental you are. The essence of an artist is that we try, if we don't like it, we don't do it the same way next time. If we do, we have found the next technique for our skills.

    - HOW DO YOU FIND OR CREATE A STENCIL to fit your needs?
Just discovered your video! Love your vibrant warm colors & how you didn’t get discouraged but continued to think outside the box & try again & again & again & not give up on creating depth! Your confidence inspired me to experiment & not worry about wasting paper! What puzzled me was the origin of the Stencil”
    Looking forward to your response!❤

I love this! Your adventure in WC is exactly what so many seem to fear! Do IT! :D Years ago, my favorite teacher was 20+ years older than I but age made no difference! She was the encourager I needed. One of the things she would tell me constantly was to put in the darks. I managed to paint mostly medium to light and it would end up to be insipid! I love that you don't seem to be afraid of trying things. I do love the way you put that background in, and I love that you used the stencil! That made a huge difference! Old paper... I have a lot of that. Some is just fine but some had bad sizing from the beginning and I still spray it with water before starting anything, just to see if it immediately shows water spots on the back. It is very discouraging when it does that. Some manufacturers had some bad batches. I love how it ended up! I no longer put graphite on the back, but have made transfer paper from rubbing tracing paper on one side with graphite sticks and then wiping that with rubbing alcohol. That stops the graphite from smearing and lets you use a single piece under the drawing. There is no graphite on the drawing that way, Keep it up - this was fun!!!

thank you for sharing about your favorite teacher, isn't it wonderful how we can carry those lessons onward through life! Thank you also for the tips on how you create transfer paper.

A light coat of a repositionable spray adhesive, like Krylon Easy-Tack, on the back of your stencil will hold it down better and prevent most of the bleeding of your paint underneath it. I've been making all kinds of stencils (some extremely complicated with many pieces to keep track of), from various materials, in 42+ years of airbrushing on many surfaces....including Bristol board, watercolor paper, cards & envelopes, and illustration board. At 65 yrs. old I'm just beginning with watercolor painting, have a few Schminke colors (tundra blue-wow!) and some hand-made colors from Etsy, also have Arches hot-press--must try cold-press...need better brushes, will get soon.
I often use a set of stencils that I really wish I could recommend called Texture FX by Gerald Mendez--but they're made specifically for airbrush, material is like ordinary cardstock but coated with something so solvent-based paints can be used...rather fragile and would never hold up to a stencil brush. However....maybe it could be used with watercolors some way. I'm going to try airbrushing watercolor through it, wet on dry, let it dry then spritz w/ water and see what happens. OK, back to playing with watercolors...

This was very informative Buffy. Thank you for sharing. I love experimenting, and love how this piece came out. The other day I worked on some more Florida sunset bookmarks and forgot I wanted to add some sunbeams. Typically you do this when the paper is between wet and dry, but guess what, the paint was completely dry. Oh dear, what to do, is exactly how I felt too. I’m trying a new paper from hahnemuhle and one of its qualities is lifting capability, which I didn’t remember, so I just grabbed my flat damp brush and started to add those sunbeams. Eureka! It worked beautifully. I feel like I’m experimenting on every piece. Happens every time I try a new tool, paint, brush, technique, or paper. It’s part of the fun of our wonderful watercolor world. Blessings to you and to the whole world!💗

I have been watching you for a while now, but this is my first time to comment. I just have to let you know how much I love your work and your techniques. Thank you so much for sharing them with all of us… So generous.
Please continue focusing on individual colors on your dot card. These are the lessons I really need to learn, color, mixing, and blending. I am wondering if there’s anywhere that I can purchase your dot card. Thanks again!😍

Thank you so much!! I currently hand them out to my in person workshops and classes, do you live in or ever travel to California? I will be teaching in person again in September. (recovering from a fall) so thankful to have this channel to share art

This was great! I used to do card making and have a wealth of stencils…And…boxes of paintings I just couldn’t make work…I am going to work on these right now!

Oh how fun! Hope you enjoyed the process, sometimes old paintings are so so good to practice techniques on

Do the white in circles and you'll have bokeh. I've never seen a big wash done without the angle. If you sideload the angle shader with a tiny bit of water and dip the tip in neutral tint it will blend out. But blend it out a little on your palette. Great video.

Your painting turned out beautifully! It was helpful and fascinating to see your experimentation and hear your thought process. My takeaways from this video are to get out my watercolours and paper and just do something, and I think I really need to buy a stencil! The effect was gorgeous! 😊🌸🌿

This is the first video from your channel that I watched and I subscribed immediately! So easy to follow, several really good tips and your voice is soothing and relaxed. One of your great tips I don’t think you mentioned as a tip - take a picture of the painting in case you mess it up! Good idea and also you can refer back to it at different stages. Thanks and please keeping making new videos 😊

Love this, Buffy. Thank you for the inspirations. I especially liked the titanium white technique and will have to give that a try. Have you tried lifting with a baby wipe and a stencil. I find It is easier to remove than to add with a stencil and I use it a lot in my work.

You are so welcome! I haven't really like the look/effect the brush for lifting gives - will have to try it someday

This is my first time on your channel. I learned more than just techniques. As an extreme newbie to watercolor (2 mos.) I learned to just "go for it! [But, take a picture first. lol"] Do you buy these stencils and then cut them out or what? I really like this picture and I learned from your talking through about the darks bring the focal point forward etc.. It seems to get in my mind better when you, or anyone, talk it while doing it. BTW, I have seen so many videos of women with soft voices and their head turned away from the camera when they continue talking their steps or process through. It's really difficult to follow.
I'm glad I came to this channel.

Hi, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment, I do buy stencil blanks and create/design/cut my own. Here is a link to my Amazon Art affiliate page with the stencil cutting supplies and some favorite stencils already made that I enjoy: www.amazon.com/shop/watercolorpour/list/SSEMGEBCOJUL
