I've been rejected and I've been at the top and I got to say that absolutely everything that you're saying tracks with my experience. The difference was I didn't realize that that was what was happening. Hopefully now armed with this knowledge and of course with some practice, I can make this a reality more often for people.
I once had a job as a civil servant with a few years of seniority, which meant I was pretty much set if I wanted to be. I didn't want to be though and was going to the major city about an hour away 4 nights a week to do a business degree, so I could leave my municipal job and switch to the private sector. We had a summer student in our office (sweet and fun) that I liked but I never mentioned this to her because I thought what would she care. It came out when she asked why I left 1/2 hour early most nights. So I was like yeah I go to class and have to catch the bus. She was like but you have this job. I did already know about her school as we had discussed it quite a bit. I replied that I wasn't looking to work there much longer and that I had already completed half the program and gotten a student award for my GPA, what with also taking courses in the summer as well. I only realized later that this really impressed her. What I thought was just my own thing, my special place and not of much interest to anyone else, turned out to be a lot more. There was a local school i could have attended but not as at rapid a pace Not long after that she asked me if I'd like to go to a nearby bar where one of her girlfriends worked and meet one of her other girlfriends was going to be there as well. I didn't understand the import of this but said sure as long as it's on a Friday night when I don't have classes this term. Don't want to miss class
