    Simon, I’m damn near speechless, without the words to thank you for this totally unsolicited shout-out and support. My God, you and I have never even spoken up to now. I’m beyond thankful to you and your viewers for such kind words and thoughts. While I never saw this coming, I’m fine, and taking a little time to enjoy both retirement, and seeing what the next stop on life’s train ride will be. More than that, though, I never had a clue I’d get a send-off by so many in the industry, like what has hit me in the last 48 hours. I keep thinking the alarm clock will go off, and I’ll realize it was all a dream. Again, profound thanks to you, and your viewers. Your kind words will never be forgotten.

      Rudy, your videos and teaching methods and demeanour were exceptional and you have a way of making learning an experience to look forward to. You would be an absolute asset to any company that would be wise enough to let you do your thing. I don’t think it will be long before someone is beating down your door for your services. In the meantime, if you have some time and would like to wander to Cape Town, please let me know and you have place to stay and amazing photographic opportunities to have in our beautiful country.

    Rudy has been with Canon for a very long time. He was an informative and knowledgeable representative of Canon camera products. He presented the features of Canon camera products in a way that built a quiet confidence in Canon products. I know that age is considered a negative for many today. I think that Rudy’s age is a true benefit for Canon as it links its historical past with today’s future. It would have been nice to have had Rudy introduce his successor in an organized fashion because this way it just seems that Canon is more worried about technology than people and that leads to questions about Canon support!!! Or lack thereof for us users.

    • @falxonPSN
      @falxonPSN หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't even think they're that worried about technology given how much Sony and others have eclipsed them in recent years. I get the feeling that they're just trying to protect their profitable target markets like sports shooters and news shooters and not really worrying too much beyond that. We'll find out tomorrow with the r1 announcement but all the early indications are that it's nothing that impressive.

    I don’t know Rudy. I’ve been a Canon user for 30 years. I don’t keep up with Canon’s marketing or management changes. A few years ago my company went thru cost reductions. I’ve been there 20 years but they fired people that worked their longer than me. Of course at the time they were making record profits. Never marry the company that one works for. Just date them and if an opportunity comes your way choose it over a misguided loyalty to the company. Because in the end they don’t have any loyalty to its employees.

    Canon USA's statement is the same kind of corporate double-speak is issued when companies cut staff. The language is intended to sound intelligent and reasonable but really says nothing useful.
    I heard the same kinds of statements being issued by media companies in the years leading up to my own layoff in 2010, a year when tens of thousands of print journalists found themselves suddenly unemployed.
    As for Rudy Winston, I wish you the best. Your instruction about emerging technology in Canon's cameras and lenses cut through much of the jargon to provide laymen with a clear understanding of new features from an expert with an intimate understanding of both the equipment and the photographers' needs. Thank you for your guidance.

      For a company looking at mass layoffs, they look for the path of least resistance first: those looking to retire early and then top them up; then they look at who makes the most and ifs there younger cheaper staff that can do the work; they look at poor performers too.

  • @HeadlessChickenTO
    @HeadlessChickenTO หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I'm part of a very large company. So I'm use to seeing people come and go, be it internal transfers, termination, or retirement. I myself have left this company a couple times, that's just the nature of the beast. I took a look at my pension, and it states I can probably take early retirement in 16 years. If I count all the years I've been with this company, if I had worked straight through, it would have been 22 years this year. Now I'm not sure if my body can handle the stresses for another 16 years, or even another 6 years (kitchen work is physically demanding). So in my situation, I'd welcome being offered an out or something less strenuous when I enter my golden years.
    Now if Rudy is here seeing this, here's my words of wisdom. Don't fret. You've made a name for yourself, so opportunities will come knocking if you need it. I do hope Canon gave you a decent offer.

      Most corporate layoffs will try to target those ready for retirement and offer them a package to leave early. Still, with the cost of everything these days, not everyone can afford to retire.

      @@OrdinaryFilmmaker I am going to guess that Rudy is doing just fine. As opposed to most others at his age. Also if his Canon followers are actually STUNNED, he should have at MIN, 100,000 subs, the first day he starts his own Channel.

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Normally I would think that, but I see so many living pay cheque to pay cheque. Being at Rudy's age is no guarantee of success as parents are often helping their kids afford homes and make ends meet. You're probably correct though.

      @vlcheish หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@natureredux1957 Not sure if you were joking you clearly do not realize how hard getting subscribers would be for a new channel. Let me put it this way. It took Petapixel around 3 months to gain 100k subs from accruing Chris and Jordan. TH-cam is no joke. If people could just start channels and have 100,000 people click subscribe in a day you would see a lot more people going off on their own.

    • @natureredux1957
      @natureredux1957 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vlcheish Well my comment was more in line with the STUNNED headline. If Canon users are THAT Stunned, then 100,000 subs would be easy. Most folks starting Channels have ZERO prior visibility which why certain Channels exploded from the past and currently, that is mostly rarely the case. So sure I said that Tongue and Cheek but I was trying to drive home a point, If folks care that much, well go out and Show it. If he starts his own channel, proved that you are stunned by supporting him in Large numbers.

    I met Rudy at a PPA event a couple of years ago. His deep, comprehensive knowledge of the Canon camera product line is, to my knowledge, is unmatched. Like you said Simon, he was the face of Canon. I’m sure I’m one of a great many who will miss him and wish him well.
    From a business standpoint, it’s a shame that long-term employees are among the first to get laid off. They’ve worked hard over the years and have the salaries over time to show for it. Unfortunately, this makes them targets when the “bean counters” look to cut costs. I’ve been a victim of that. It’s not fun.

    Let me give you some insight. Last fall I was "Terminated" from the company I worked for after 17 years and the reason was "A Reduction in Force." Historically that usually meant "Last in First Out." Not any more, as this "Reduction in Force" was very "Surgical" and had three categories of people who were terminated...
    1. Managers they did not like
    2. A few "new hires" for the last in, first out scenario
    3. Very specific people like me who had one thing in common... Higher than average medical costs, which of course is illegal, and we did not realize it until we started connecting the dots which was after already signing a document in order to get severence. Additionally they would not let me take my pension in a lump sum so that I could control it, but rather so THEY were in control of it to cut it off in the event of being a whistleblower, well prevent you from contacting the Feds with the risk of losing your Pension.
    I would lay money that either Rudy or someone in his family had high medical costs and that was the reason he was terminated.
    Cheers!

    Rudy has developed a large following amongst Canon's user base. Koby has none. The one that matters less to the Canon is Koby, honestly. He can easily be replaced by many people. Rudy cannot be because it takes long years to build up the kind of trust he has. I will miss Rudy, but I could care less about Koby and he probably won't make a damn bit of difference at Canon.
    Sadly, once you get of a certain age, your job is always in jeopardy, with few exceptions. If there is a way to get rid of you without getting used, management will seek it. At least in large corporations, perhaps not so much in smaller companies. This does not apply to those at the very top of an organization, however, as we can see by our current presidential situation.

    This is typical of Japanese companies. No matter how good you are and how well you have done for the company, it means nothing when it comes to cutting staff. This is not just for non Japanese, it goes right down the line. You are just a number. When a new MD comes in from Japan, he knows nothing about existing staff and what they have done for the company for how many years, your number is simply a number and if it saves a certain amount of money, you are out. They have no shame. 😢

And no question Rudy has been a lighthouse for Canon. That light has been turned off. Doesn’t look smart to me.

    Ya right… work a career with a large company and get screwed before it’s time to collect your full retirement benefits. Happens all the time. 30 years in and you’ve accrued too much vacation time, insurance benefits, retirement costs, etc. Get rid of as many as possible before company commitments come to fruition. I’ve been there myself and my wife too. Sickens me to watch this happen over and over and over. Canon will hire someone new for a fraction of Rudy’s cost. Sorry Rudy! You did so well and got the boot as a thanks… Join the club.

    While we are all sad to see Rudy go I myself was laid at about 60 while working in the semiconductor industry when my employer at the time was positioned itself for sale by eliminating mostly all the senior people with salaries on the high end. Luckily a bigger, better, and more profitable company took the opportunity to expand and I got a great new job at a company looking for experienced people. Maybe Sony or Nikon should consider hiring him. Good luck.

    Rudy was excellent at his job. But I would bet the new face will be much younger. Canon wants to appeal to a younger market. That market feels people in the sixties are out of touch with what the younger people want. That’s is a bit amusing because many of the best photographers have reached their sixth decade. Thanks Rudy, you were a sane voice above the mob hysteria.

I was never so fortunate. So, thank god you have the channel. Realistically speaking, in today's environment a solid Plan B and C, is a definite must.
