    That orchestral section makes me think of childhood past, friends lost, memories obtained and nostalgic moments. What a gorgeous and touching piece of music

    That mid section with the orchestra can make a grown man cry...!! ♥️ I've watched a reactor, big, broad shoulders, bearded man, break down and cry because of it. It's beautiful

    You know how people talk about "Next Level"... Dream Theater are 10 levels above that. I've seen them 11 times live since 1992, and every time was EPIC!!

  • @mtaffer
    @mtaffer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    This song is the definition of EPIC! The ending you are talking about is so incredible and moving and emotional, sometimes I shed a tear when hearing it. Powerful stuff! That said this lyric video has some laughably wrong lyrics. Head in hand is hand in hand...and the ending is you'll never know, never know, know that your aliiiiiive, it doesn't say anything about joy period...lol. But when you know that he is saying alive and he hits that note that harmonizes with the guitar note, that gives me chills!

      Agree with you, except one thing about the lyrics. He sings head in hand. I have the cd with the original song and lyrics 😇

    The ending of this song and the guitar solo to "the spirit carries on" which i've seen 4 times live... first in 2001... straight to tears 😅😅😂. This one as well... glad you enjoyed this track and found it. 👍🇺🇸

    Dream Theater are the Children of YES and carrying on the tradition of Prog!!!! Love them!!! Love them!!!! Their melodies and transitions of absolutely beautiful. Their message is so positive and spiritual!!! Love them!!!! We got to give more of them!!!!

      Children is the wrong word for it. They are the leaders,and if anything are the parents of moving, epic, progressive metal. Yes never moved me even close to the music of Dream Theater.

      Don’t forget Rush is also a huge influence for them

      To a certain extent it depends on which version of Yes you consider. The Wakeman era Yes set the bar and Dream Theater has the utmost respect for them

    That "portable piano thingy" that Jordan Rudess got out at one point is called a "keytar" (combination keyboard+guitar). If you do Octavarium live, do the "Score" version (search "Octavarium Live Score" and you'll find it). Also, from that same concert, another 2 songs of theirs worth checking out is "The Root of All Evil" and what I consider to be one of their most underrated pieces, "Sacrificed Sons", which is about the 9/11 attack on the WTC.

  • @troywest

    If you do Octavarium, use the live "Score" DVD version. Another show with a full blown orchestra. You'll love it.

      Seconded. Jordan Rudess (keyboards) plays his synth, a pedal steel and a fingerboard. Unbelievable performance from all of them though 🤯

    What a phenomenal piece this is, prog metal brilliance from the masters & those wonderful orchestral musicians & choir. Check out "Dance of Eternity" from the same show. Cheers

    My favourite DT tracks, are precisely tunes like this, where their root influence from YES (and Rush) is so evident, without ever copying them, and creating their own gorgeous melodies :)

    The look of sheer confusion when Mangini started double-beating (13:44)… priceless, and fully warranted. Made me realize exactly what he was doing, and how hard it must be to keep his wrists loose enough to do that while also moving his arms around so quickly, and then also switch in and out between doing that and regular ol’ beating so quickly.
    All five of them… experts of their craft.
    Also, I don’t usually sub to reaction channels, but I just stumbled upon you and this reaction gained a sub. It’s clear you have a deep respect and appreciation for music as an artform, just from your reactions alone thusfar, and apparent preference to let the music play without pausing and saving comments for, presumably, the end. Grade A content.

    You should react to Dream Theater's Alcoholics Anonymous suite. It's five songs over five albums. It is about Mike Portnoy's struggle to overcome alcoholism. The songs are as follows:
    1) The Glass Prison (studio version)
    2) This Dying Soul (live at Budokan)
    3) The Root of All Evil (studio version)
    4) Repentance (studio version)
    5) The Shattered Fortress (Live at Boston Opera House)
    This whole entire suite will also leave you speechless!!

    is there copyright issues for studio vs live? I see some reactions are live some are studio, IMO studio are always better cause you can hear the music and production clearer

    • @POPE.
      @POPE.  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      honestly these videos could be taken down at any given time by the labels but i agree to your point and try to hit the studio versions first usually if there isn’t high demand for a must see live performance.
