Working with a Stubborn Boer Show Goat: Halter & Collar Lead Training

In this video, I work on training a Boer goat that I am leasing named Karma, as I prepare to later show her at the Umpqua Valley Junior Classic Livestock Show.

Sylvia is 14, and raises Kiko goats (and soon Savanna’s too) for a hobby business. Starting with just two does, and later a buck, she shows her goats in 4-H, breeds them, raises baby goat kids, and sells them. More goats to come into the herd in Spring! She strives to produce quality goats, and hopefully help make this amazing, hardy, minority breed more well-known in her area. She also has fun with her goats, and learns responsibility and farm management in the process. All animals are treated with care and respect, and get to enjoy part time free ranging on the property, eating grass, and blackberries. Silver Pine Kiko’s thrives on her family’s 5 acre property in the beautiful green foothills of Oregon.

Mine is so bad 😭 I have to drag her 😭 I started standing and pulling on the halter a little bit until she took a step, then released, and did it over and over, and that worked!

Are Boer goats the only goat you can show in your area? How much longer until the show? Great video and Karma is pretty
No, you can actually show any meat goat breed, but people and the judges prefer boers because they tend to have better muscle confirmation. Haha, the show was actually the 17th, and there will be a little surprise with that video which will come soon, so stay tuned...

my goat won’t walk until I drag her to a certain spot! She only walks a specific area. When I take her somewhere else, she refuses to walk! It’s so weird because I see other goats walking all around the barn while my goat just walks 4 blocks and lays down afterwards. I’ve tried 2 different halters (she doesn’t like them because she immediately lays down) I tried a collar but I don’t like the collar at all because she starts coughing out of no where and I somehow feel like she can’t breathe with it. She walks okay with the collar but still doesn’t want to walk long distances. Any tips?
Keep working with her! Some goats take lots of patience and hard work to teach them to walk. If it helps try using treats and turn it into a fun game. Try to build a routine where you’re working with her for the same amount of time at the same time each day, and start out maybe in a spot near other goats or where she’s most comfortable until she gets the just of the halter. i walk my doe every night, and i haven’t seen any progress! i’m working her the same way i’m working my other doe, who is progressing well. any tips??
Thanks for watching. That’s interesting that you have one doe progressing and the other not… one of your does might need some more attention than the other one. I encourage to try some different training methods with her and see what works. It might just take more time and try out some different types of halters or leads too. I’ve noticed that being a difference in how they react to training. It’s been at least a year since I’ve shown goats but hope this is helpful. Good luck!
How much time do you spend with training/walking, and how often?
I usually practice training and walking my goats about 3-5x per week, ~20 min for each goat. It also depends on the goat, some need more frequent training than others or they won’t learn as quickly. Also, it’s always best to start training a show goat at least 2 months before the show so they can have enough time to learn the groove of things. Hope this was helpful. Thanks for watching!
