    Thank you very much for this lecture series. I am reading this article as a graduate student in Native American studies. I read the article, fumbling through the passages, without understanding a thing. With your lecture series I now understand the background, the significance, and most importantly the basic premises of her argument. Thanks, you've saved me many hours of studying in the dark.

    Just watched all your lectures on this essay in one sitting, and they were amazing. It's sad that the channel has been inactive for the last few years. Still, there's a lot already in here that's new to me and will be of use, so thank you for all your work in making these videos!

    You are amazing. Thank you so much for the tremendous effort you're doing to simplify the understanding of these complex issues. May God be with you and strengthen you to continue doing the things that you do.

    Thank you SO much. I watched all the videos on Spivak AFTER I read her essay and thought that I was simply a dim whit! You clarified so much for me. I will look for more videos on topics I struggled through in the past. Thanks again....
    I wasn't able to download the written information.

    Dear Dr. Campbell, thank you so much for these videos!! They have helped me tremendously, and it is such great work that you are doing. I always have trouble in my literary theory courses because I'm not the brightest tool in the shed, but this has cleared a lot of things up for me. Thank you so much once again!

    I cannot express my gratitude towards your video. I would have never been able to understand Spivak's essay without your help. I am a biochemistry major but I like philosophy and decided to take it this year. There were many new concepts in her essay, thanks for clarifying them!

    Dear Dr. Campbell, thank you very much for this introduction and your effort to allow an understanding of an article which would have been otherwise far out of my reach. I just read that your channel is inactive for a while which is quite sad as you open up opportunities for people how aren't schooled as philosophers.

    Thank you so much for this video series. Due to a combination of my being busy and my lack of awareness as to how dense this reading would be, I put off reading it longer than I should. When I got to it I had very little time to take it in, and did not know what to do when I found myself unable to understand much of it. You have helped me immensely. God bless, and keep it up.

    Thank you so much for your explanation - it made me reflect on the situation if Gazans and how they are stuck between two extremis : an occupation that pretends it wants to eliminate only militants by destroying whole infrastructure - and a resistance that, even if its understandable, made an action underestimating the devastating consequences on the normal citizens. Between this and that, the question becomes: how can we raise the voice of these normal people in such a capitalist system as you described it? How can we make their political aspiration heard?

  • @drjasonjcampbell
    @drjasonjcampbell  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @lordlevo good point. The subaltern isn't a reserved position. Any group, containing any demographic identifiers could potentially be subaltern. spivak would acknowledge that.

    Thanks for this. What do you think of the dilemma of her trying to criticize the lack of a means by which the subaltern is heard while writing in such inaccessible language? I guess this is my frustration with this text.

    • @KitchouaTembo
      @KitchouaTembo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are right, I find it quite paradoxical that she claims her right to be heard but would address in such a way that the only people that will understand the text are most likely to agree with her!

    • @MikeMena
      @MikeMena 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think part of the problem with finding her writing style "difficult" is not only asking "who speaks," but also who listens (reads) and which listeners (readers) need to believe Spivak is "legitimate enough" to even pick up her text. I think she knows exactly who will "listen" when (and only when) she writes in this linguistic register...but, who knows...

    P.S. I love hip hop. In the UK we got a rapper called Akala. His Fire in the Booth:
    and his SBTV F64:
    are both incredible and real. I wonder what he and Spivak would have to say about each other... hmmm.. haha :) thanks once again for a great lecture

    Great lecture, from the UK. I thought I understood clearly, but I have a question. What is to stop the woman from speaking up herself and simply demanding to be heard? Does Spivak not accomadate for that, or is it to use the Wal-Mart analogy, that as a individual the woman has no power. Which makes me think, what is the difference between the individual woman, or the individual hegemonistic man? Legitimisation?

    "female intellectual as intellectual has a circumscribed task which she must not disown with a flourish." - it seems like the DISOWN here is not the identity as a female, but the circumscribed task - the task as intellectual. It might mean - female intellectual must not forget that we are intellectualising through institution of patriarchal control and domination. Rather than mean that female intellectuals have the task to speak our individual female 'truths'. I think she was arguing against such re-presentation for a more political idea of re-presentation.

    Thanks so much! An aside to the reading or maybe not. I have felt recently that there is something lacking in Foucault's work. I noticed his lack of engagement with race in particular, and read two essay in Society Must be Defended and was not satisfied. Unfortunately I don't know enough yet, or have time enough right now to isolate time to consider this. But again I very much appreciated finding your videos.

    ‎A clear explanation of how Spivak concludes that the subaltern cannot speak: "The hegemonic discourse, the British colonial masters, and the indigenous population has all essentialize the voice of the woman [who commits or could potentially commits sati] and no one has allowed her to speck for herself, more so ... there is no structure in which she would has the ability to speak for herself."
