Not sure if you are still reading comments on your videos, but I watched your lecture and I am deeply thankful for the effort you put into it and the way you made Spivak easier to understand. I was about to give up but after listening to you, I feel like I can give it another shot. Thank you so much!
Thanks for this. I read Spivak in college for Theory of Translation (Spanish) and the professors totally skimmed over her writing telling us, "Poor Spivak, she gets her romanticism mixed up with her feminism." I am graduated now but will never forgot that comment. I cannot wait to get into all over your other videos as well. Thanks for confesssing your fondness for this subject. I can relate to your fondness and discovery of a particular world. Again, thank you.
Studying her text here in Japan, you've really good contents in your channel, especially love this introductory lecture on Spivak's text, thank you! Your channel has really great potential ey!
Thanks a lot for that! I was trying to read the essay for a master level class but boy it's not that easy. I'M coming from archaeology, so I have very little notions in philosophy. I'm super glad I tumbled on something like this!
Thank you thank you thank you...I started reading Spivak and didn't have a clue what she was on about...hopefully these videos will help me so I can get this essay done!
@philb0412 Ur right videos 24-33 are for people with no prior experience and 34-38 are for those with I'm a bit cautious presenting public lectures to the world So I try to ensure that I differentiate my interpretation from whats in the text. I really wanted to "break-it-down". I hope it will encourage more people to read spivak though, she's a genius. Unfortunately I see lots of students conflating the subaltern with oppression so I wanted to be clear. But I could have shortened the intro :-)
Thanks for your post, it is great to see an African American male doing philosophy! I suppose it is true when you see someone that looks like you doing something it gives you hope!
Thank you so much for these very useful videos! I appreciate you differentiating your interpretation from the rest. I love your style of lecturing. You mentioned that the notes can be downloaded! Can you tell me where? Any chance you will be lecturing on Postmodernism? Thanks
Thanks for this series of Spivak, hasa prior helped me understand the text a lot more fully. I would say that the introduction up untill 34 is a bit too long though. You don't need to say 'this is just background' that much and I understand that it is just your interpretation, no need to labor the point. I hope you can see this as constructive criticism. I would recommend people with some prior knowledge of hegemony, subjectivity (poststructuralist vs marxist model) and semiotics to start ...
@yemonja100 I obviously missed ur comment a few months ago when you posted it. That comment would have stuck with me as well. It unfortunate that the professor didn't take her work seriously. But glad I could help.
The correct pronunciation of Du Bois is Bois that sounds like noise, not the French pronunciation. I know this because I had an opportunity to meet Shirley Graham Du Bois and she corrected our pronunciation.
eqvivocation is a nice trap many fall into, and also makes a mess of their work; at least for student and novices. by the way none of Spivak emerge in this video
I've read her book and after 100 pages she never answered her question. Talking about Faucault and suti, even tho it has nothing to do with that question. Isteadd of just answeing her own question
The actual content of the video starts almost at minute seven. The beginning is just repeating the same information over and over again (And saying nothing)
Im a 2nd year sociology student from Manchester writing about post colonialism, this video has been a huge help! thanks!

Spivak's Can the Subalteran Speak is taught in High School. My High School is an overachiever.
Dr. Campbell, thank you so much. Four weeks to qualifying exams and I appreciate this very much.

An animal is used to hit a ball in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in the Wonderland. However, the animal is not a bat but a flamingo.
Seriously… you are amazing. Thank you for everything that you do
So nicely explained. Couldn't have asked for a better explanation............

your way of teaching is fun and understandable!
Thanks so much for posting these lectures. They are so very helpful
I spotted the Gye Nyame symbol on the wall. As a Ghana It made my smile.
Dr. Campbell do you have any lectures on postcolonial theory apart from Spivak?
this is exactly what I need!!! Doing an essay on postcolonial theory (the history of) and this paper is very difficult
I can't download the lecture! Somebody can help me with that?
did you get them?
Thank you very much, The Ghetto Philosopher. Your videos have been very helpful in plumbing Spivak.

This is so good!
Thanks! What does she mean that the subaltern can talk but cannot participate in a “speech-act” in recent interviews?
The link doesn't work/ broken
please how do I get the lecture notes?
from number 34, and then go back if there are bits you don't understand fully.
Nonetheless, still a great video, extremely useful.
Thanks very much

AWESOME IDEAS
I have an exam on theories tomorrow :( This was very helpful revision and you explained it better than my lecturer did! Thank you!

612: still skirting around ... Gawd! What a meandering intro....
if anyone from my 2020 AHV class is watching this, Heyyyyyy!!!!!
Start viewing at 5.00minutes keeps talking about what she's doing without saying anything until 5.31
@soultorment27 LOL!! Never heard that one...but I do like ham sandwiches :-)
A bat is used to smash your head. Is that what you call a lecture, and that too on Gayatri Spivak?
eqvivocation is a nice trap many fall into, and also makes a mess of their work; at least for student and novices.
by the way none of Spivak emerge in this video
Why am I watching this?
who’s here from polo
Here
I am 80% through the video, and still I have no idea about "Can the Subaltern Speak".... thank you for wasting 8mins of my life

Man! You're speaking about something complex and yet you're speaking so fast. Why ? Aren't you supposed to help us to understand Gayatri's tought ?
