What impresses me with Mike is, with his TV profile and car/ van selling businesses he could have easily dismissed the you tube " generation"
But he seems to have actively embraced them, allowed his name to boost veiws and subscriptions on their channels for seemingly very little in return.

Mike, if you start your own TH-cam channel, I can guarantee there would be a queue of people offering their help for FREE let alone want to work for, and/or with you. Any car channel worth it's salt would be begging to collab, then there are the specialist and general parts manufactures, suppliers fighting to sponsor you. This just goes to show how humble, honest and down to earth you are that you don't realise how successful your channel would be.

I honestly don't get it. It's the British culture of doing well, having aspirations of doing better. The idea of Ed being this deity is mind boggling and 99.9% of people not having a intellectual thought about what happened.
Discovery aree not in the business of standing still. They said come to America (or leave) and Ed didn't want to. How in the world you can then go "Oh Mike your a w@nker etc etc. Our precious Ed has been sold down the river.
Then you expect someone who still gets shat on over something perfectly normal decades ago does get pi$$ed of about being hated about it?!
Certainly not everywhere but certainly the UK seriously hates people going from keeping them in their back pocket, just barely making money to getting successful.

@@mattsansom644 Not entirely true if TV are commissioning Mike for new projects. Seems odd that Clarkson's Farm is to be decommissioned but that could be about high demands from the participants not production costs. Clearly if Mike spends £400,000+ p.a. on Auto Trader, the TH-cam monetization is not appealing enough to attract his attention and there is a fine balance between over exposure and leaving viewers wanting more.

With the popular Matt Armstrong, you probably understand that if they don't do better video quality and sound ,they get within minutes of airing many many viewers telling them that it's Bad bad bad ,it's the contact ability that TV and even press can't match , remember the old days of writing to an editor ?
And if TV does wrong ,it's either writing a letter, phoning up and possibly emailing to maybe get a response !

I was 12-13 when the Mini was launched it was £495 + £14 if you wanted a heater. It was shocking. Noisy cramped and when it rained it soaked the carpets and you feet because they had spot welded the bulkhead on top of the floor panel and there was an out of balance couple that caused some wayward handling. Once sorted it was far better than anything on the road in terms of handling and roadholding but it remained cramped and relatively noisy and it never moved on from its A series engine and four speed box. I built and tuned many of them following the instructions/books of the Mini guru David Vizard and tuning companies such as Oselli, Broadspeed , Downtown, Derrington, Slark etc. but I can honestly say I never had any great affection for the car. Now the Hillman Imp is another story.

What a fantastic ambassador for his industry.
Interesting points raised about the grip that AutoTrader, Cinch and Motorway have on the industry. I gather it's the same with the property sector and Rightmove, Zoopla etc. The fees per week as a fellow business owner though are just eye watering. I worked as a Consultant with a retail business from 2010 - 2015, and in one of the exercises we carried out there we had static costs of £1000 per week; before you'd even paid for any stock or staff and that couldn't support itself on declining sales from there £7000-£12000 per week "hay days". I think when they eventually pulled the plug on the business they were doing around £3000 per week in sales, with increasing costs and low margins.

Very interesting chat with Mr Brewer, but the last 15 minutes were the most interesting to me. With regards to social media and what have you, I am a one man band restoring a certain type of car and I used to get off on posting pics up of projects and explaining what I was doing. Eventually though, it seemed that anyone that was looking was searching for the littlest thing to pick fault with, even if they had no real interest in my service or products. I don't post anything now and to be honest I am as busy as ever, but I am under no illusion that if I was looking for more work, social media is a powerful tool, it's just the tools that use it that are the problem!

In the 1970s there was a small roundabout at the bottom of King's Heath High Street, near the police station. In my Mini I could flick flack through at 30 mph. The Police 1800 behind me could not. The driver was not amused and his look, as he subsequently went past, said it all.

Now he's left wheeler dealers, can't wait to start watching again, always thought he talked vehicles down, humiliated sellers, bought car, passed onto the legendary mr "anstis" motors, then flipped by talking up, and took the credit.

I love Mike, his TV series, along with the likes of TG, whether people want to believe it or not, literally paved the way for automotive TH-cam. Personally I'd live to see a Mike channel and contrary to what he's saying in this podcast I think YT would give him the freedom to do what he does best. A good editor or 2, a good camera/drone man and he's away. The likes of Seen Through Glass or Ollie Heel & Toe quality of production, Matt Armstrongs raw pieces to camera and angle of jeopardy and Auto Alex's fun factor and you've created YT automotive mecca, and Mike with a few cameos could well deliver that. I'm in no way qualified to day this but the pull of 'TV money' must be the only pull for Mike. The TH-camrs I mentioned all had the vision and surrounded themselves with people who can bring those visions to fruition, Mike could easily do the same and with views, retention and sponsorships and I believe he could make it at least financially parable, without any creative shackles and network red tape. Regardless of all that I love and appreciate the man for filling my youth with cracking tele to watch ❤

Wow the ironic insight of the last 10 minutes of the interview, about how expensive it would be to to retire in California
(this filmed a couple of weeks ago, before the recent wild fires)

Hi Ben, one of your best podcasts to date!
Mike is THE car dude no matter what age you are, lets have a Mike Brewer YT channel!
Just my opinion but i feel you are really getting more engaging with your guests and not bigging up your own story! Great stuff!👍👏👏👏♥️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
