It is sad to see the river die in our times. The river was perennial once upon a time. It is in existence since pre Vedic times. The paleo channels along its course like Sultan Pur Lake, Najafgarh Jheel, and number of forest clad water bodies depict the story. How and why it died, its a long story. In 1977, there was a great flood which inundated a large portion of land from Jaipur to Najafgarh. To save from such a situation, a Barrage was constructed at Masani village and a number of smaller dams were constructed on its tributaries. This action had resulted in stopping the flow of Sahibi River or Sabi River. This act which was initiation of a well thought out plan resulted in going the water table down along its course, dryiny of river and a water system from Jaipur to Delhi. The flora and fauna also lost heavily. Gurugram is situated on the river bed of Sahibi. A jheel in Gurugram also died in due course because of this. People got more land to construct housing societies and industries. But one thing they forget, the construction is on river bed. And a big size of paleo channels exist under the mother earth along Sahibi river course upto Delhi. The river still flows upto Masani Barrage, during monsoon season. What if the rain fed river comes alive like Ghaggar river this year and spread its water along its course. The entire area would be inundated once again. Excessive rains like this year may being back the memories of yester years. The lesson is river exist or not, just leave its khadar area alone.
