      Medication isn't as bad as people are making it out to be. It has the highest likelihood of achieving the desired effect than any other psychotropic medication. If it doesn't work, a person can always try something else or they've been misdiagnosed and they actually have something else. Now I have more control over my executive dysfunction. My only regret is I didn't start sooner. I was diagnosed 3 separate times at different times and I often wonder where I would be in life if I had the proper interventions from the get-go.

    As someone with ADHD, the hyperfocus isn’t always on something you’re actually interested in. The defining characteristic of attention deficit disorders isn’t a short attention span, it’s a lack of ability to control attention; I’ll lose hours throughout the day doing random shit that I don’t even care about because I’m unable to switch focus. Hell, I’ve spent hours staring at a wall because I couldn’t translate the thought of moving and actually doing something into a real action.

    The reason a child with ADHD can play video games for hours is because video games provide instant feedback on how you are performing. That instant feedback increases the learning and understanding of the game, and boosts serotonin and norepinephrine. Regular school learning does not provide instant feedback on how the child is doing, and without that feedback they don't know how to make sense of what they are being taught, how to stay engaged, and have a decrease of serotonin. ADHD kids and adults require instant feedback in order to pay attention and learn.

      I would have to kind of disagree. It is not just simply about interest, this is what can be so challenging about living with ADHD. Sometimes I desperately want to do something, including things like hobbies I really enjoy. But I get stuck in 'ADHD paralysis' or I simply procrastinate with other stuff despite having a desire to do a certain activity. Switching activities is just unexplainably challenging and I cant even explain why but this is a super common thing people with ADHD go through.

    Idk if it's discipline. People with ADHD often have difficulty with executive functioning which is a term used to describe cognitive functions such as initiating tasks, working memory, emotion regulation, planning, organizing, shifting from one task to another, etc. Some people with ADHD hyperfocus on things they like as a means of self medicating. They are chronically understimulated and so when they find something that keeps them feeling calm and comfortable such as a stimulating game, they will stick to it. There are a lot of strategies people with ADHD can use to make navigating the expectations of the world more managable. The problem is that many people with ADHD are not taught these strategies or given space to figure out which ones help them the most so instead people say they don't have discipline.

    This is absolutely true. I have ADHD. If it’s something I enjoy, want to do, or if I can get myself involved and go, I can stay focused and be incredibly zoned in for 5, 6, 7 hours. If I DONT want to do something, or if it’s not enjoyable at all, it’s almost impossible to actually start. If I can get started generally I can finish but getting over the hurdle to actually get my focus on target is almost impossible

    It really pisses me off to think my own not super serious condition is just being used like that, and why adhd anyways?! It’s easy to find fakers because it’s not as serious as they act on camera! Literally anything else would be better.

    Honestly I think that is most people. It takes a lot of effort for me too pay attention to / focus on something I don’t like or don’t want to do. Kids with ADHD diagnosis can do it also, they just are less willing to acquiesce to the standard social structure. My son was diagnosed with ADHD b/c he wouldn’t sit still in reading class. He wiggled and wanted to roam around (sounds like his mom), but when I told them just let him read standing up or while he was working on one of his drawings - kid has the reading comprehension and speed of a high schooler (he was in 3rd grade). He was bored, and learning things faster than the teacher was going. He’s not an “office” type person - he’s an outdoor physical person, and has adjusted to adult social construct (discipline) just fine in his work. He never was on medication.

    • @martinlutherkingjr.5582
      @martinlutherkingjr.5582 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This sort of think is the reason the US is over medicating people. If everyone has ADHD, it ceases to mean anything. Only someone skilled in diagnosis can reliably determine this and even if they are skilled they can get it wrong. Behavioral disorders aren’t like a blood test that tells you yes or no that you have a disorder. Everyone can have similar tendencies but the severity and the presence of other symptoms are critical.

      Hard to notice your nose even though it’s clear in your field of vision, right? The brain intentionally blocked this out, so you have to really focus to see it, and even when you do focus on your nose and see it, it’s annoying to do that for a while. It requires more attentiveness for individuals with adhd.

      the adhd people in the past were just plainly defined as ‘idiots’ with extra steps like every god forsaken simplified thing back then
      and yeah sure, you could ‘just do’ the task but after jumping off the metaphorical cliff of focusing or applying yourself over and over again, your brain just ceases to function from pure exhaustion. And also the fact that what you get from this hard work is sadly consistently mediocre, or just not well-done because said lack of focusing.
      I am the result of when an unmedicated adhd person goes out of their way to do work hard in the american education system- exhausted constantly and a shell of a person.
