- Welcome to Ep 4 of Carpe Diem Sailing and Part 1 of our new series: Learn to Sail. In this video we introduce sailing terminology and the basic parts of the boat with an introduction to standing and running rigging using animations, diagrams and live footage. Clearly explained this video will be great for people new to sailing or for sailors with crew who are looking to learn and improve their skills and knowledge. Hope you like it!

Learn something new everyday. I’ve been sailing since 1972? Everything from sunfish up to 45 Lagoons. I can’t remember ever hearing the term Gudgeon. Glad I watched.

Just what I needed. I've sailed and owned sailboats for 50 years, on & off, but just bought my first "big" boat last year, an old Islander 30, which was built just after I first started sailing (1972). After all these years, I figured that it was time I learned the terminology for parts of the sailboat, etc, or at least get it more clear in my mind what I thought I knew. There's more to know about on the bigger boats. What you shared here was very helpful. I very much appreciate the effort you put into making this video. I learned more in such a short time than any other videos or classes. I'll be coming back again!

Thank you for these videos. My goal is to purchase a small day sailer under 30ft when I graduate law school next June. I plan on taking sailing lessons first but these videos are helping set a foundation so that I’ll have as much knowledge as possible .

Your instructions were clear and thorough. There seems like so much to learn with sailing and then when you see all the physical work that goes into it, I wonder, where is the joy in sailing?
It's not really that much work, and it seems much more intimidating than it actually is. There is no feeling like it when you shut off the engine and the boat keeps going and all you hear is the lapping of the waves along the sides. Having said that it's not for everyone which is why power boats were invented

This video series is so good that I keep coming back again after watching and absorbing for a few weeks. I'm on my fourth cycle now, and each time I find new nuggets. There is so much knowledge packed into the videos and the 10 minute or so duration is just right for learning. Kudos. I'm ready for the checklists and cheatsheets mentioned in this video, but I couldn't find them on your website. Could you post a link?
I wish I was closer so that I could sign up for in person instruction. I bet I'd learn a lot more from you in person, and it would be great to learn it all on my own boat.

Wow, this video is super helpful! How does it not have millions of views? I have started studying the sailing theory in my native language, but I don't even live or plan on sailing in my country, so knowing the English terminology is a must and that's how I came across this gem. Hoping to utilize the knowledge from this channel on my upcoming vacation which will include a sailing trip!

Reminder, standing and running rigging need to be inspected and replaced at the proper intervals, so many boats are out there with rotten lines and standing rigging rusted to break point, (FYI, almost always in behind the treads of the turnbuckle so you won't know if it is bad) replace standing rigging at the right time, BEFORE it is obvious! Or see your mast come down.

Yes, because I usually make 1st timers pilot the boat "just point it this way". By the time we get to the Marina they have the concept down .
Love the video. It is VERY helpful. Just one question, is the windward / leeward graphic correct? It seems to me both boats are sailing windward.

Thank you for the informative video. As a non native speaker I find nautical terms particularly difficult to remember and to some extend even unnecessarily complicated. I wonder if these terms will be changed to something simpler for the next generation to easily learn? I mean many are from 18th century Dutch

What's the difference between cabin , deck and cockpit
You said they are self explanatory but not for me :(
No problem. The cabin is everything down below, the living quarters. The deck is the top of the boat that you walk around on. The front is called the foredeck and around the mast is the mid ships deck. The cockpit is the area where the helm is and where the boat is worked from. Traditionally the cockpit is the open area at the back of the boat but there are also centre cockpit boats. Hope this clears it up for you
