probably the entire quarter to entire half of the store being lumber in various forms (depending on which store you go to, some have more than others) that are often fresh or damp in some way
As a Lowe's employee, I prefer Home Depot. I only shop at Lowe's because of the discount, I know the layout by heart at this point, and I can goof around with my coworkers. If I am out of town, I'd rather go into the 'enemy territory'.
I worked at Lowe's a few years ago. People would come in and say how much cleaner and more organised it is than home depot. I'm pretty sure Lowes pays their employees more too. I'll always prefer lowes, but im a mellinial so I don't shop there much anyway
After working for Lowe's for ten years, I can tell you what I saw; Lowe's tried to be everything to everyone. By that I mean that as a sales manager, we were told to focus on three big areas: special order sales, installed sales, and commercial sales. The first two aren't terribly hard... You have a customer who wants something unique, you order it. Or a customer who wants a professional to install new windows, it's covered. Where they failed, imo, was the commercial category. For example, you have a builder who is building a ten unit apartment complex, and they need 10 dishwashers, garbage disposals, stoves and refrigerators. To get them bulk pricing, we had to submit the order into corporate and wait 2-3 days for their best price. However, Home Depot had a team set up doing quotes as soon as they were sent over. Note: I left in 2009 so there maybe a change to this now. Who, as a builder, will you buy from? The store that tells you they'll get to you with pricing sometime later in the week? No I liked working for Lowe's. I just feel that corporate became too unattached from the sales floor. And the same can be said for other companies
Lowes/Home Depot, in both cases you're always sent by some guy who doesn't know the specifics of what he wants and is either vague or it has been discontinued since the 90s. Don't ever take a job cheaply where you have to deal with the logistics for people who don't know the proper names for things or understand the time required to obtain. This would be local mechanics, shipping chandleries and construction workers in my personal experience.
I think another reason is that a lot of people go to Home Depot to find things that Lowe’s doesn’t carry. When I worked there a couple years ago, I had tons of potential customers come and go because Lowe’s didn’t have exactly what they were looking for. And where did they go? The Home Depot right across the street
This difference between Home Depot and Lowe's can be summarized in one word: BRANDING. Home Depot has much stronger brand recognition than Lowe's. It is used more in the media as a reference and the public usually follows suit. Lowe's needs to either rebrand or provide a much more compelling reason to visit their stores.
Here in valdosta ga lowes beats the home depot in every way litterly ever worker on the home depot looks depressed and always complain. *not trying to be a Karen bu this really got me. Every time I got to lowes I always see a smile in every workers face. Idk but I just feel like lowes is better here
As someone who's never been to the USA, I can confirm I hear a lot about home depot but not much about Lowe's, they should amplify their brand recognition if they don't want to die
Same, my town has a Lowe's and Sutherland's across the street from each other, and a Home Depot only 10 blocks away. Sutherland's has the lowest prices but the weirdest selection. I bought bath soap there once, next to the checkout.
I have a Lowe's but the closest home Depot is 20 miles away. They can build CVS and Walgreens across from each other on every block but Home Depot has no interest i. This area and that's their mistake because it's booming.
Yes! My Home Depot is very close to my Lowe’s, so my dad always switched back and forth between stores to look for what he needed. He always went to Home Depot for Milwaukee tools though.
@@galehunter2519 Lowe's is still solid too though I love how they got Craftsman tools been a fan of them also, My dad has their dual wattage Soldering Gun and my god is it nice he fixed his AC unit with it!
The only thing Lowes does better than Home Depot is a let veterans use their military discount for online purchases once you register in the store for a military account. It is unbelievably annoying that Home Depot does not allow this. You have to show an ID every time and you have to go in person. Normally, I would say it’s not that big a deal, it’s whatever, but it’s also a problem because somethings are online only! Therefore rendering your discount N/A. Although Home Depot gets points back for carrying Behr paint! Valspar is trash!
@@DavidA20200 Valspar is horrindius paint Behr paint has always been good it's one step above the Ace 5 star which is in the top 5 behr is usually the third best paint.
Orange resonates with “hard work” as in construction (cones, signs, warning signs) thus Home Depot’s color attracts the consumer! Blue resonates with big box Walmart! Either way I choose Home Depot
I'd say Walmart is a lot more similar to Home Depot in terms of dirtiness, disorganization, unhappy/rude workers, and overall atmosphere. Lowes is like the Target of home improvement.
Holy CRAP you’re right!! I’m in my 50s and go there WAAAY more than when I was younger. But I think it’s because I have more money to spend on tools I don’t need as much now Lol
The more a man ages the less he goes to electronics stores too. At least thats my experience. When I was early 20s I didn't even know what 90% of the stuff at Home Depot was for. Now its all more interesting.
No, that's a "dimple lock" which is common in Europe. Instead of the cuts of the key being on the edge of the key, they are cut into the middle of the key. So the key goes in sideways. For some reason they tend to have plastic grips instead of metal, also. More info: lockwiki.com/index.php/Dimple
As a general contractor, he is SPOT ON. I prefer to go to Home Depot for work related things and bulk buys, but if I'm doing something around my home or I have to get something for myself, I got to Lowes.
I was always wondering why Lowe’s was squeaky clean with a shiny cement floor as opposed to Home Depot who has dull cement floors but The scent of the store always resonates of fresh wood
My Lowe's and Home Depot are right next to each other but I generally buy at Lowe's principally because they offer military veterans a 10% discount on most in store items.
Same here. Home depot only offers military discount on holidays and weekends and on non discounted items. Lowes offers the discount 24/7 on everything, no questions asked. Whenever i buy large ticket items, it is always at Lowes.
I use mylowes card that way I always get my military discount AZ to return items using my Lowe's card. My Lowe's card tracks all my purchases I've made from over the years'. At Home Depot I have to show my ID card then hope the clerk agrees to give the discount without talking to a manager
@@jerseydave71 Yup! 24/7, discounted items, appliances, I even got a zero-turn 10% off. Home depot introduced a $50 discount cap. Ever since I learned that, I have shopped exclusively at Lowes.
Lowe’s is just, soft feeling, y’know? Home Depot is just manly feeling, you’ve got vintage lightbulbs that could make Edison discharge with their tungsten wires.
I have a Lowe’s and a Home Depot about the same distance from my house, and I have been to both. I went to Home Depot for one project and while ppl were willing to help me when I asked, they didn’t really have the answer I was looking for as to what I needed to buy. I was at Lowe’s for another project, and I didn’t even have to ask for help. Someone in the department I was in saw me looking at some products with confusion, and asked if I needed assistance. I told him what I required, and he was able to tell me what would work. Definitely going to stick with Lowe’s
For this industry I think it really boils down the hiring practices of both stores. Sometimes you get lucky and find an employee that actually knows what they're talking about, but realistically you're more likely to get a glorified Walmart employee who has a tenuous grasp at best on what they're selling and the industry they're serving. Nothing against Walmart/retail employees, but there is A LOT to know in these industries, and it's unrealistic to expect the average employee off the street to have a solid knowledge base on many different subjects. When they do find a potential candidate qualified to advise on these things, those guys/gals most likely are looking for more than the $12-14/hr these big chains can afford to pay their employees. It's pretty much a lose/lose for the consumer, and I'd advise the average DIYer to do as much research as possible before trying to solicit advice from an employee, because you're running the risk of getting subpar advice from someone who isn't paid enough to give good advice.
In New York , you cannot find assistance at a Home Depot. And if you do the poor guy is swarmed around 10 customers shouting questions at him. I have traveled out of my area to Lowe's. Upon visits I'm immediately welcome and offered assistance. I'm a garden enthusiast. I love the products from Lowes. Better then HD.
Similar experience, better service at Lowe's. Now that they are both doing curbside delivery it also shows -- the HD curbside is very convoluted. You have to txt a number , then they text a web form you have to fill out to get help. I don't have a smart phone so I have to phone my wife to do it on my laptop at home. With Lowe's you just call the store and they come right out. I sent HD customer support several messsages to point this out and they don't even reply to your message.
There are many specific products that Home Depot does not carry but Lowe’s does, and vise versa some products Lowe’s doesn’t carry but Home Depot does. As an employee of one of these two companies I would imagine it doesn’t hurt being so close to each other because many of my customers go to both stores each time.
@@evandelgadillo That's the same reason why fast food restaurants often cluster together in one block. It's actually good for business to be close to your competitor if you think about it.
I use both. Both within 3 miles of my house. If I need something I check out prices at both online, and who has it in stock, in the store! Now we just got a harbor freight couple months ago, need check that out too
I go to Lowe's to look at stuff that could improve my house that I know I'll never actually do, and I go to home depot to also look at stuff that could improve my home that I know I'll never actually do.
i just wanted to say I’ve never been interested in business or economic related things but your videos are so easy to understand and super interesting! Keep up to good work :)
I actually worked at both, both have a motivation song during the morning meeting. "Gimme an L! Gimme a O! Gimme a W! Gimme a E! Gimme an S! What does that spell? LOWES! Who are we gonna beat? Home Depot!" The song was reversed when i worked for depot. Goes back to I could care less who i work for, just give me a paycheck. Customers felt the same way, we had a Lowes literally next door, if we didn't have something they went there and vice versa. Customers go back and forth constantly.
I've worked at a home depot for a few years now and they've only ever done the chant at the bi-annual store meeting. Nobody including management wants to do that shit especially at 6:30 in the morning
I worked at a Home Depot in college and you would be amazed by how many ex-Lowe's employees we hired. Not because they got fired, but because the work environment at Lowe's is so bad they quit. The customers would say the same thing about the way they were treated at Lowe's vs. Home Depot, saying the service and prices were much better at Home Depot.
I guess it depends on the management. I left Lowes in under a month. Just wasn't worth my mental health. My Home Depot has been great as far as retail jobs are concerned.
I currently work at lowes and it’s probably the best job i’ve had. Great management and they treat their employees great. it’s sad to hear about your experience when i personally love my job
My friend was a long time employee at Menard's - a smaller home improvement chain based in the Midwest. He would always chant, "Lowe's Blows" whenever we asked him about price or store comparisons.
HellScream the last several time I went to Lowe’s they had a poor service and the employees weren’t so friendly. But Lowe’s dose have things that Home Depot dose not have normally though.
@@phineas626 I live in a smaller town, so lots of big retailers put heavy emphasis on greet and conversational etiquette. Or, at least, from what I've noticed.
@@Gabriel-mr2tf Yeah depending on where you live the overall vibe of stores can be totally different I'm from the south, but lived in Kansas for a few years, and found that store employes out that way where just not as friendly, and helpful as here back home, for example they would tell you where something was, and you would be left on your own to find it, but here a lot of store employes(I'm talking across most stores) will walk you to the item/s in question, and will even answer questions about said item/s if they know about them.
You are 100% right. I usually enjoy shopping at Lowe’s as a DIYer, because of the atmosphere or layout I guess? But anytime I need a quality power tool or good hardware/lumber I rather go to Home Depot. If that makes sense at all lol
My take as a contractor: Home Depot often has a better selection, but their customer service is poor in comparison (All this is in my area/experience). So: If I need something I know Lowes has, I go there because it's faster to get in/out and the service is generally better. If I am not sure Lowes will have it I go to Home Depot. The takeaway: about 95% of my dollars go to Lowes because time is money.
@Colon Pal You're an idiot who has obviously never really worked a day in your life. Buying stuff in advance online and picking it up from store my work if you wanna pick something up later that day, but that doesnt work when you need a certain part or piece or tool right now to continue your work. Just running to the store and picking out what you need yourself is usually the quickest thing to do.
@@sgtcaboose5407 To add, if service is poor and/or staff are limited, chances are when you get to the store for your pickup, it's not even ready. Wasting more time. I had worked at home depot for nearly 5 years, within those years, picking orders was a common complaint. Or, people would complain about what you 'picked' i.e. quality of lumber.
Lowe's has my Kobalt XTR stuff! I have more Kobalt tools than any other now. They have stepped up. I like Lowe's better for most frequently purchased items but I like Home Depot for better lumber.
I've always preferred the look and feel of Lowe's over Home Depot. However, the main reason I shop at Lowe's is because it is closer to my house than Home Depot.
I’m a woodworker so let me explain why Home Depot is better than Lowe’s. Prices on lumber at Lowe’s are about 20% more expensive than Home Depot. Home Depot also has a wider selection of premium brands. It’s also a much nicer place to be inside than Lowe’s. My go-to store is Home Depot
I've gotta disagree on most of that. To start with, almost everybody who consistently depends on their tools will have "their" brand that they always buy. For example, my grandpa choose Craftsman, my older brother uses Snap-On(the mechanic obviously), my father likes Dewalt, and my younger brother and I personally prefer Kobalt. Unless "our" brand doesn't offer a specific tool we need, you can guarantee that we're not going to buy from another other brand. As such, having a wider selection isn't going to matter to the individual worker, it just matters to the store for drawing in more people. As for the insides, it's not even a contest. Lowe's is laid out much better, and because of how they're designed, they look cleaner. Home Depot on the other hand often looks much dirtier because of the more industrial design, and has a worse layout. (Although, I will admit that layout is more of a personal taste thing.) On another note: it may just be my locations, but it always seems like Home Depot workers always seem to be less knowledgeable about pretty much any subject. I don't know if THD rotates workers around, and Lowe's keeps them in a single department or what, but it always seems like Lowe's employees are better trained. As for the wood itself, that *really* shouldn't even be factored in here. If you do construction work, you should be looking at your local lumbar yard for wood, and if you're doing more carpentry/ornate/fancy type stuff (can't think of a good way to describe it) you should be looking at places like Wood Craft, or another specialty wood shop.
I worked at Lowe's at the same time a friend worked at home depot. At Lowe's employees were treated like droids. At home Depot everybody seem to be treated like family. It really hit home one Black Friday when I wasn't working but went shopping. Lowe's and home Depot both set opening for 6:00 a.m. I drove through the Lowe's parking lot and there were maybe a half a dozen people waiting in their cars for the doors to open. I could see employees trudging in the door like they were headed for a prison sentence.. I drove across the street to the home Depot and they had about 200 people in line waiting to get in. Now this was less than 3 minutes after I left a nearly empty Lowe's parking lot. The storm manager and an assistant were out walking the line and engaging customers handing out hot coffee and donuts while the workers inside got the store ready. That contrast right there spoke volumes to me about how each one looked at their customers.
I've been in construction for almost twenty years now. I prefer using Home Depot, if I must shop at a big box store instead of the lumber yard. Here's my reasons why: 1.) Home Depot has an excellent range of tools that tend to be more professional quality. Brands like Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Makita are major brands that professionals trust. Even the house brands, Ridgid and husky, are solid quality tools. 2.) Home Depot has a dedicated team of customer service reps that facilitate material orders and help contractors coordinate deliveries. Their ProExtra service provides excellent business tools for making the experience more efficient. 3.) I've learned from experience that buying lumber from Lowe's can be a risky venture. It seems like their 2x material is very dry and splits when nailed together. Especially when an adjustment in framing is needed. Home Depot has excellent quality material and can be compared to the lumber I get from a lumber yard. That said, recently Home Depot has tinted their treated lumber and thus, increases the price. However, most homeowners appreciate the tinted look. 4.) They rent tools. 5.) These are more minor and miscellaneous than the others. The home Depot website is neatly arranged and even shows the specific Bay and aisle location of products in the store. The lay out of the store is better suited for professionals to make quick visits on the run. Last, if I have any problems about anything at a Home Depot, a manager will go above and beyond to rectify this. A couple months ago, I was needing to grab a fairly large lumber order and was short on time. Unfortunately, a couple of the employees weren't customer oriented and was neglecting to assist in material loading. This resulted in using more time to load up and being able to only pick up half the order. I had to be on the jobsite and couldn't stay longer to load the rest. As I was loading up, I asked if a manager could come out to hear my concerns. He was courteous and empathetic and I could feel that he was actually listening to my issue. He apologized and offered to deliver the material to the site free of charge. This is just one example of the service I've received at Home Depot throughout the years.
Nailed it, no pun intended. HDs wood quality far exceeds lowes in my experience. I only have lowes in my town which is fine if I just need something small. However if I'm making a large purchase or getting a new tool(Milwaukee) I go to HD, about 30min across state line. And I feel husky is superior to kobalt in every way. As far as the employee's go, my lowes is in a college town. So maybe I'm wrong but, they are there just to earn a check for beer money and it always has that disorganized feeling. When I go to HD it's right the opposite. Great folks. I was always a lowes guy until I became a home owner and started a landscape business. Better selection and HD sells echo power equipment.
Used to be the electrical mgr. at a Home Depot, now I'm a retail rep for Lowe's, THD, Menards, Walmart, Ace etc. They all do certain things well, THD is best for contractors and bulk buyers as we dealt in quantity and the pro desk staff is a more self contained enterprise. Lowe's does better with weekend DIY people who are willing to spend more money for a less hectic an tidier shopping experience. They are moving towards aesthetically driven buyers such as younger couples with extra spending money. I got to both of them multiple times a week for the utility company and I like the less hectic feel I get in a Lowe's but like the pricing and supply of THD, I feel like it's choosing a Walmart vs. Target shopping experience personally. Glad they have been good for you, when a store has the right management and logistics they can be a great ally for contractors and the like.
You were dead on about Lowe’s and Home Depot as a consumer. I prefer Lowe’s but it’s not a big deal to go to Home Depot. And if my local Lowe’s is one that is closing, I’ll probably go to Home Depot since it is so close. I also like ACE but they are like the convenience store version. Smaller, more expensive, and less selection. But I can be in and out faster and always find some help. So they are often my backup
Absolutely. I was going to include it in the video but many people have suggested this so I didn't want to make it seem like I ignored their suggestions.
As a Home Depot employee we hear a lot about our local Lowe's store from our customers. One thing we try not to do is bad mouth Lowe's to the customers but it gets hard when almost every customer that brings up Lowe's has something negative to say. Now granted they are in a Home Depot when they say these things so it has to be taken with a grain of salt but the shear amount of negative comments makes you stop and think. After dealing with 100's of customers venting about Lowe's it all breaks down to Customer Service in the case of our two stores here. Our Home Depot really focuses on Customer Service above all else. The local Lowe's does not as the major complaint we get is a complete lack of customer service at all levels. The Customers who come to our store over Lowe's know that when they walk into our store they are the highest priority and will get the help they need whereas in our Lowe's store they usually spend a lot of time just looking for someone to help them just to find out that the person they get doesn't have the experience or training they need to help them in any meaningful way or they just don't care enough to bother. This seems to be a consistent theme. Edit: On a side note I know some of the people that work at our local Lowe's as I've worked with them in other jobs in the past. These are good people who have cared very much about customer service in the past but something about working at our local Lowe's seems to beat that out of them very quickly. This leads me to believe that it's Lowe's Corporate policies or policies at our local store that are making them be this way in their current job.
I don’t know if you still work for The Home Depot, but I was just in one and also a Lowe’s on Black Friday and the demeanor of the employees was a huge difference. The Home Depot employees were all cheerful and ready to help. Had a young man ring me up and he was so pleasant. We went over to Lowe’s after and the employees seemed moody and were still trying to set things up. Hell Home Depot had coffee and cookies at the door. I was traveling for Thanksgiving and since we only have Lowe’s and Menards where I live (and Menards is an excellent regional chain) I always find it a treat to go to The Home Depot. Thanks for doing a good job.
@@yamajammer76 No I don't work for Home Depot... I actually left there and worked for Lowe's as a Manager in the very store I was referring to for two years. It's varies greatly store to store and has more to do with the Management in an individual store. The company really doesn't matter it's the management at the store level that makes or breaks the customer service in a store. When I went to Lowe's there was a huge exodus of management and the two stores switched. Under the new management the local Lowe's started to outshine the local HD as they also had their Store Manager leave and service suffered as a result of the new manager. When the upper management focuses on the associates the store will out perform in Customer Service. When the upper management focuses on numbers the associates tend to just be there for the paycheck. This goes for all retail everywhere... It's the individual store management that makes all the difference for whatever company.
I think that Lowe's could actually be quite successful by honing in on being geared more towards the consumer. We have something similar in the Midwest called Medards and it has big convenience store energy despite being a home improvement retailer. We have a Home Depot in my hometown and most people actually prefer Menards for the righteous snacks and patio furniture selection.
Lowes employee here, customer service is literally our highest priority, thats not surprising XD if someone asks us a question, even if we're in the middle of a project or task, we're trained to stop what we're doing and help them out first.
Cap. "Knowledgeable" in the sense that customers think every employee in the store should know about every item in the store & where everything is. In reality they're all assigned to a specific department. If customers were more aware & accepting of this, there'd be less fricition in that area.
Can't ever find a employee to help at my lowes but at home depot the employee may not know much but at least they'll try and point me in a direction. I would take the latter any day.
Ive been a DIYer basically all my life, but also over 5 years ago I started a kitchen remodeling business. That being said, ive been on both the commercial and residential side of buying from both Lowes and Home Depot. Honestly until I started my business I had no real preference at all between the two. It simply came down to convenience. Now as a professional I do prefer Home Depot. But really has nothing to do with store layout or advertising. I still like both, but Home Depot carries a wider variety of professional grade tool lines. For example: Ridgid, Makita, Freud. They both have mainstream brands like Dewalt or Bosch, but again they BOTH have those. Lowes lacks any proprietary lines aside from Kobalt. But Kobalt is a lesser grade line. And then similarly Home Depot has Husky.
But then maybe Sherwin-Williams deal to let Lowes carry their Minwax line of finishing products exclusively (besides themselves) will do something to boost customer base.

My dad is a private contractor, he put it like this, Home Depot is where you’d go for any small to medium project, (professional or around the house) as well as tools and what not Lowe’s? You’d go there if your not familiar with or don’t have a Home Depot nearby
I've worked for both, and am currently employed at Lowe's. Your dad's right. Home Depot is way more contractor oriented and still has it balanced for regular DIYers and average shoppers who don't know shit. Lowe's is mostly for people who don't know shit, and even those people tend to prefer Home Depot lol
Morgan Morgan you’re just trolling comment threads now. Maybe it would be wise to go back to school and learn to spell, use punctuation and write paragraphs before pretending to be a professional. Your bad experience with Home Depot likely stems from your incompetence.
Any "contractor" that buys stuff from either place is only interested in future job security when everything built breaks, fails or falls apart in 3-5 years due to inferior junk products sold by lowes and Home Depot.
I work for Lowe’s and for the first time since 89 we took over the number one spot at the end of December last year. I highly doubt it’s still that way we’ll because Lowe’s is having a hard time keeping workers and company morale is at an all time low meaning we don’t care to help anymore therefore people leaving without spending. Just my two cents on an older video! “Thanks and have a Lowe’s safe day!”
That's because of that asshole CEO Marvin firing people and cutting staff to next to nothing just to line his and shareholder pockets he's gonna kill the company
@@kevinjackson5654 same shit he did to JC pennys. Just bc they have held executive roles doesn’t make them qualified to do much more than shit in a toilet.
Exactly! And I’m furious that they bought out Orchard supply Hardware and shut them down because they would have what I needed more then Lowe’s OR the Home Depot! Or at least it seemed so.
same here ..depot has what i need 99% of the time and the pro desk guys are great for ordering what i need fast...lowes is for the weekend warrior or diy guy..nothing wrong with that.
As a commercial construction project manager, my experience is when we source material from a retailer, it’s typically Lowe’s because they tend to have larger inventory. That said, if I need something for around the house, I go to Home Depot first. It’s generally (in my experience) view from construction professionals that Lowe’s caters to commercial construction more than Home Depot. The name says it all, Home Depot, yeah, they cater to the home owner and home builders.
I’ve worked for both and when people have asked me what’s the difference in working there, I’ve said that Lowe’s is very DIY. Things like paint, blind/key/glass cutting are at the front of the store. But there wasn’t a ton of bulk loading carts and the checkout experience as an employee (cashier) was not user friendly and unnecessarily complicated. Home Depot is very Pro. The paint and cutting areas are more pushed back/hidden, but it’s super easy to find a flat cart for your lumber or buy 50 gallons of paint (no exaggeration) and the Pro Desk is always packed with contractors. But, Lowe’s felt like you just come in to help the customer and Home Depot felt like you come in to make the company money. When I left Lowe’s, they just started downsizing/demoting employees so I guess that attitude didn’t work too well.
That's why I prefer Home Depot over Lowe's, since Home Depot has a lot of very professional products which my father and I used quite a lot when it comes to putting new windows/slide doors in houses, paint, insulation machines, and other stuff. However there are somethings that Home Depot doesn't have which Lowe's has so we have to travel some distance to get the item we need.
@@dallenpowell2745 I will take your word for that. The store where I live stopped doing it. So did my local Home Depot. The only place to get it done here is at ACE Hardware or a glass company.
Yeah right. Everytime I go to Lowe's there's loading carts lined up indoor to use at my convenience. At Home Depot you can never find one and have to wander out in the parking lot to search while it's freezing and snowing. This is true all locations in various states.
Home Depot also feels more inviting than Lowe's because of the color schemes and overall vibe , Lowe's makes me feel like there's lots of parts of the store I'm not even authorized to be in and Home Depot feels like your neighbor invited you into their shed to borrow something for the weekend
I work in the receiving department at home depot, which is the one place in the store customers aren't allowed to enter. Once every two weeks or so, some customer will get confused and walk straight back there and ask questions like "Is this aisle 44?" or "Where can I find xyz?" I can agree, this place is very inviting.
I prefer Lowe’s it’s cleaner and stuff is Easier to find, however sometimes they don’t have the stuff and I’m forced to go the Home Depot which is dark and they never have employees when I need them lol
Here in the Midwest, menards beats both, except for their power tool selection. Then home depot is 2nd, with a lot of contractors doing business with them. Lowes hardly gets any contractors, and is more expensive on a lot of items.
Woot! Menards! Worked for them the last two summers and loved it! Even met my girlfriend there! I was looking for SOMEBODY to say something about Menards in the comments. It is sooo much better than both of their competitors!
Having worked for both (Home Depot in the early 2000’s and Lowe’s from 2010-2012 and again from 2014-2016), Lowe’s treated me far better as an employee, made me feel more valued, I was able to transfer to other locations with ease when I moved, less inner company drama and politics, I made far better money, and I still know lots of people working at Lowe’s, but don’t know anyone who works at Home Depot. I also went back to Lowe’s (for awhile) because I honestly enjoyed working in Pro Services as a specialist. There were some douche bag middle manager booger eaters, but that’s any big company. I’ve heard from friends there that things aren’t as enjoyable at Lowe’s now with several mid management changes at store level, and apparently the new president that came in made some changes that have friends seeking new employment. Wish sucks actually. I know folks who are 20 year + Lowe’s employees. I still shop 50% at small local hardware stores, 40 % Lowe’s, and 10% Home Depot. I find Lowe’s and Home Depot are similar priced, but Lowe’s has a “warmer feel” shopping. Home Depot seems like a dull Warehouse. I enjoy my career now, it’s like 100x better. But if I ever fell on hard times and needed a job, I would probably consider working for Lowe’s again till I found something better. Can’t say that about Home Depot.
I've worked for both too, and completely agree. Home Depot makes way better business in my area, but it can be overwhelming because of that and you know how bad the customers can be. At Lowe's I get an hour lunch, a vacation every 6 months, and because it's slower business it's way less overwhelming. The Depot is a more secure company by far, but Lowe's treats it's employees way better.
I agree. I never worked at any of these places. But the people working at Home Depot are more assholes and don't seem to care about the customers like they do at Lowes.
@@KevinBenecke As someone who's worked for both, that's because THD has a way higher customer volume. The majority of the customers are entitled assholes who expect college age employees who make $10/hr to know about the millions of products in the store and know contractor methodology for home renovations. When 99% of customers are like that, it makes retail workers jaded. Just because they're wearing an apron doesn't mean they're not a person. It's like that at Lowe's too, but the customer traffick is less so it's more psychologically manageable.
That's an interesting take. My parents run a construction company and they've always had their account through Lowe's. I always just kind of thought of Home Depot as an off-brand, DIY Lowe's. I wouldn't have guessed that Home Depot was focused more toward professionals.
You should do a follow-up video about how they are doing with the pandemic. I think it would be really interesting to see how each business model has held up.
Ross Turner I think that depends on location at my local Home Depot. The sales people treat you like the store is a mom and pop! They remember your projects ask for pictures.
I will always prefer Menards to both Lowes and Home Depot. We have all three in my area. One of my uncles worked for Home Depot a number of decades ago. You might not have a Menards anywhere near you, but they're fairly common in the midwest.
I am curious- (Michigan resident, familiar with Menards) Does Menards have competitive pricing? Do they have a similar inventory? I'm curious because I'm constantly working on my house, and always in need of "something". I used to shop at Lowes because the pricing WAS better- but now I shop pretty exclusively at Home Depot. Also, I find their sales to be better overall. I'm always looking to save a buck, as I'm a single mom-trying to update the house for as little as possible. Do you really think it would behoove me to shop at Menards instead?
Used to Work for Home Depot. I would sometimes ask customers who's cars I was loading "so why do you like us over others, like Lowes?" And they'd almost always say "Lowes never had anyone there," or "Those guys at Lowes never know what they're talking about."
Home depot is my store and I'm not exactly sure why. Something about Lowe's doesn't sit right with me. And it just feels like everything is in the wrong spot at Lowe's. I end up walking around the entire store to get all the supplies for one project when most of it should be in the same section by logic.
As an experienced DIY'er I prefer Home Depot. The few times I shopped at Lowe's I always felt patronized. I just wanted to respond like this: th-cam.com/video/IEhHEOIYgMY/w-d-xo.html
You know you’re tired when you click this without reading the title, expecting a mashup of the Home Depot theme and a Lowe’s theme that doesn’t even exist apparently, but you’re still vibing
So happy to see another video from you. But I, your loyal follower, among many other loyal followers, have spoken. *More company vs. Company videos!!!*
I agree with almost everything you said. The only thing that doesn't make sense is just how well Lowes seems to be doing. Whenever I visit one of the Lowes stores in my neighborhood the entire store is empty, I mean nobody. While at the same time the Home Depot across the street has lines down the aisles. I always assumed Lowes was on the brink of bankruptcy, not enjoying a comfortable 2nd place.
I agree that it is about branding. Home Depot's typefont is even more fun-looking. It looks like some sort of "This Old House" store. I personally prefer Lowe's. I don't know what Lowe's can do to improve sales, other than be really smart about following fads and having some really killer items. I think that their Lowe's exclusive indoor plants are an attempt at the latter, for example.
It's always good to look at both stores when looking for something; I've found time after time that Lowe's offers some items cheaper while Home Depot is cheaper for others. Also sometimes Lowe's carries items that Home Depot doesn't and vice versa. Because of this I honestly can't choose one over the other (I do think Lowe's is slightly more upscale, though :)
Exactly, nationally they only have about a 3% market share, but by regions where Menards is available they beat out home depot AND Lowes in market share.
The current Lowe's vs Home Depot dynamic when combined with competition from Menards looks like of the cases where large scale capitalism is at it's best multiple large companies in close enough competition to prevent one from gauging customers but the company's are still large enough to pretty much maximize economy's of scale not perfect but definitely an interesting dynamic. I Personally favor Home Depot for my personal purchases but would go to Lowes if it is more convenient.
I absolutely love home depot's website, it tells me what's in stock per store and exactly where it is in a specific store. Target has begun doing this well as well, saves me so much time.
I eat a pizza every single day and whenever a company man video comes out I instantly order my pizza and wait for it to arrive before I start watching the video.
Am i the only one voting USPS? im joking. I hear they might go out of business because of all of the internet traffic unlike the old days of sending mail.
FedEx all the way. I was a supervisor at a wine company, and we dealt with both (because of state laws like in PA, you can only ship UPS) and UPS...say it with me now...SUCKS. My company always had issues whereas FedEx was all over any issues I had and their employees were knowledgeable.
OnTrac FTW. Much better than USPS, UPS, or FedEx. Also consider DHL. The Google Shopping Express in SF, CA, US used them for the first while (after their initial attempt to deliver themselves. OnTrac did far better than they did themselves, and far better than the current service (which, tellingly, I don't remember).
From my analysis of Home Depot I think HD has incredible info system that helps them raise the amount they sell per square feet. They know exactly what is the demand for each product and they adapt very quickly. I think this is probably why their performance per square feet is superior to Lowes. Lowes should hire more data analysts and upgrade the system if it wants to improve the sales per square feet.
There is a Lowes and Home Depot almost next door to each other near me. I go to Lowes at least once a month, usually more. I went to Home Depot one time about 15 years ago. I bought a window air conditioner and it wouldn't get cool, so I took it back. The customer service acted like they didn't believe me. They would not give me my money back until they plugged it in at the store and let it run for an hour to see for themselves. That really upset me and never went back. I didn't want that hassle anytime I needed to return something. I have never had an issue with Lowes. No, Lowes is not the place to shop if you are a contractor or have a big project, especially lumber, but I don't think Home Depot is either. Not around here anyway. There are building centers for large purchases.
I'm sorry about your experience but it's really unfair to judge a whole company by one bad experience , let alone not go there for more than a decade. I think everybody's bound to run into a bad experience at any store at random times. It really comes down to the individuals you're interacting with and or the time and place
There are lots of products that actually work but are returned as not working. If you were selling something and the buyer wanted to return it, would you at least look at it and test it out?
Stark industries only specialises in weapons but Wayne enterprises is a tech fuel&construction etc company in fact they constructed most of Gotham city so in my opinion the Wayne's get the w
As a former customer service associate for Lowes, I can say that my training was completely geared toward accomodating do-it-yourselfers. The pro-services portion of the store is much smaller than the rest (about 1/6th of my store) and it was often understaffed leading to many angry professionals just trying to pay for what they need and leave. Many times I was pulled away from working on the other side of the store in the Lawn & Garden center to load a pallet or two of materials into a professional customer's truck because they didn't have any licensed fork lift operators on duty which is unacceptable if they want to attract more builders. Thats probably why Home Depot is doing better. They also hire people who really know what they're talking about and in my experience, shopping at Home Depot is better all-around.
I work tool rental at HD. I have all lift lisences since i worked on overnight frieght. I also notice that lowes is more slack on safety. Mainly in the overhead. We have strict overhead rules. Netting and bars for safety. I went to lowes and the boxes are scattered and some even hung off the edge. Though i will say you are right about DIY. It caters to them and women. The lay out of the store feels like a walmart. And its much cleaner. HD is more gritty, but they try to cater to everyone. We have PRO deals and we have DIY workshops and such.
@@MalonzeProductionsGaming Lowe's has very strict rules too believe it or not, but the company as a whole is so cheap and prone to budget cuts to try and take over home depot that not all stores have a LP. The LP will walk around our store and has literally fired people for small offenses, example is we lost a guy of 11 years with no issues at our store because he didnt use a Lowe's issued saftey blade while on the clock to open a letter for his 11 year anniversary(not standard but our manager is pretty nice and generous person). Fired on the spot. If our LP sees anything in top stock over hanging by 3" or even at all someone is in trouble.
@@calebdavis1605 yeah we've had that happen too. every other year or so they crack down on safety, only to lax a bit then go back to being nazis. one of those was kinda like your story. so we have the "zone of safety" rule for the lifts. 10 feet in front and 4 ft on all other sides to be clear of people while driving. when we drive during hours we need a spotter. the spotter needs to be 10ft in front. the manager walked up and stopped them. took a measureing tape and saw they were only 8ft. i had a stupid story myself, but i didnt get written up, luckily. during one of those crack downs, they wanted us to wear gloves constantly while handling boxes. ok fair, ive gotten many cuts. but then i finished my boxes and went to sweep. SWEEP. and the manager told me to wear gloves. i laughed and thought he was joking. his response "you see those bits of splinters on the floor? what if you trip and land on your hand then the splinter goes into your hand" i felt like that south park episode where the parents made thier kids wear bubble wrap to play foot ball (sarcasm ball, or w/e they named it). lol
@@MalonzeProductionsGaming Spotters are required at all times except when business hours are not being conducted, even then customers cannot be in the store. Spotter has to be 10ft on all sides not just the front. And we are required to stop doing what we are doing if a customer comes up to us. I can have the mast 20ft in the air pulling down a pallet and have to come back down and stop because a customer wants us to do something stupid like get them a cart, put item on cart, and take to their car. Nothing ever gets done and management wonders why.
@Andy Wilderness Its different when only 2 people are ever scheduled for one department. Poor associates I can live with if there are enough of them, 2 employees in building materials is ridiculous.
@@naughtyhieroglyph669 But if the markup/price is higher, and the discount is lower than the difference, is that really a discount? I think that's why Menard's has all the 11% discount promos, everyone, no discrimination, get's a larger discount than either competitors give any special group.
@@RobertMorgan I have not seen enough of a price difference to justify shopping at menards. It is cheaper for me to shop at either home depot or lowes, because of the discount. I also do not have to jump through hoops to get it, like fill out a promotion. At this stage, the only draw to go to menards is a difference in inventory, as they do carry things that the other two do not. But even then i still get the discount with special orders, and it is almost always cheaper to shop at lowes or home depot. I shop around, not just at the big places, but also the local ones.
@@naughtyhieroglyph669 With all due respect and more if you are a veteran but did you join the military and serve your country in order to get a discount at your local retailer?
Lowe's caters more to ' the somewhat handy Jim the homeowner' type ,or those that are completely unhandy, but still need to get some stuff and make the attempt at DIY projects. Plus they tend to be somewhat more expensive (as you mention) on quite a few things. I still usually go to wherever is the most convenient relative to where I am headed.
When I bought my home, I replaced all 3 toilets. HD and Lowes had the same Kohler for the same price, but the Lowes one included soft-close lids. Easy decision 😆
Home Depot stuck it’s foot in its mouth the ceo did several times by giving millions to trump during the pandemic I wander what blow back that will cause the depot . Where as Lowe’s is giving its employees hazard pay
The problem is Lowe's keeps closing too many stores. So people go to Home Depot just for the convenience of not having to drive way out of the way!! Otherwise I would always go to Lowe's!!

No
I liked working for Lowe's. I just feel that corporate became too unattached from the sales floor. And the same can be said for other companies
Can confirm all quote supports come in in less then 10 minutes now, Lowe's commercial sales worker here 🖐
Lowes/Home Depot, in both cases you're always sent by some guy who doesn't know the specifics of what he wants and is either vague or it has been discontinued since the 90s.
When I was little I would call Lowe’s “blue Home Depot”
And you can call Home Depot "Red Depot"!
Brucifer Mephistopheles orange?

You're not really wrong
I called walmart "Blue Target" lmao
This difference between Home Depot and Lowe's can be summarized in one word: BRANDING.
Home Depot has much stronger brand recognition than Lowe's. It is used more in the media as a reference and the public usually follows suit. Lowe's needs to either rebrand or provide a much more compelling reason to visit their stores.
Here in valdosta ga lowes beats the home depot in every way litterly ever worker on the home depot looks depressed and always complain. *not trying to be a Karen bu this really got me. Every time I got to lowes I always see a smile in every workers face. Idk but I just feel like lowes is better here
They have craftsman, that’s why I go to lowes as well.
Yea, East Texas here.. Our local Lowe’s is generally considered supreme over Home Depot
As someone who's never been to the USA, I can confirm I hear a lot about home depot but not much about Lowe's, they should amplify their brand recognition if they don't want to die
Change BRANDING to POPCORN.
There is a 2 block stretch in my home town that has a Lowe's, Home Depot, and Menards on it. Its pure bliss

The only thing Lowes does better than Home Depot is a let veterans use their military discount for online purchases once you register in the store for a military account. It is unbelievably annoying that Home Depot does not allow this. You have to show an ID every time and you have to go in person.
I've seen HD out folks in charge of depts. Plumbing, electrical etc. Who NEVER held a tool in their life !

Exactly

I tell you what this is SO true. I did work for Lowes. NEVER THE FUCK AGAIN.
My friend was a long time employee at Menard's - a smaller home improvement chain based in the Midwest. He would always chant, "Lowe's Blows" whenever we asked him about price or store comparisons.
I know the jingle all too well. "Save big money at Menards!"
Definitely. I go to both depending on prices and variety
Are you in the US or Canada?
Yes Lowes is much better for a contractor time=money
Lowe's has my Kobalt XTR stuff! I have more Kobalt tools than any other now. They have stepped up. I like Lowe's better for most frequently purchased items but I like Home Depot for better lumber.
I've always preferred the look and feel of Lowe's over Home Depot. However, the main reason I shop at Lowe's is because it is closer to my house than Home Depot.
About the same for me, except that Lowe's is only marginally closer. It's easier to get in and out, though.

@@CountryCarReviews Used to buy Behr i think its overpriced, Sherwin williams is hugely better for 5 bucks difference
Hehe me too
You're gay though so it doesn't count.
Seth's Custom Creations I’m a customer. I like the hardware in Lowe’s and I like the basic tools in Home Depot
You're a woodworker & buy wood from either?!????!!!?
Sure, but the store layout and cleanliness of Home Depot is atrocious.
@@JakeSnake07 Interesting tid-bit, until about six years ago, Snap-On and Kobalt were made by the same company!
Here's my reasons why:
1.) Home Depot has an excellent range of tools that tend to be more professional quality.
Chris Griffin that's pretty good store manager move

I’ve worked for both and when people have asked me what’s the difference in working there, I’ve said that
Lowe’s is very DIY.
Neither of them cut glass any longer.

Once every two weeks or so, some customer will get confused and walk straight back there and ask questions like "Is this aisle 44?" or "Where can I find xyz?" Having worked for both (Home Depot in the early 2000’s and Lowe’s from 2010-2012 and again from 2014-2016), Lowe’s treated me far better as an employee, made me feel more valued, I was able to transfer to other locations with ease when I moved, less inner company drama and politics, I made far better money, and I still know lots of people working at Lowe’s, but don’t know anyone who works at Home Depot.

Having worked 20 years between the 2 companies, I can tell you that Lowe's by far has the better customers.
Yup, at the home depot the customers are fucking brutal
Ron Jeffrey it’s cheaper
Lowe's is also a more pleasant shopping experience.
Ross Turner I think that depends on location at my local Home Depot. The sales people treat you like the store is a mom and pop! They remember your projects ask for pictures.
Having worked 2 years exclusively at Home Depot I can confirm without even stepping foot in a Lowe’s 😂
I don't care what big-box store it is you always end up walking all over the dam store
As an experienced DIY'er I prefer Home Depot. The few times I shopped at Lowe's I always felt patronized. I just wanted to respond like this: th-cam.com/video/IEhHEOIYgMY/w-d-xo.html
You know you’re tired when you click this without reading the title, expecting a mashup of the Home Depot theme and a Lowe’s theme that doesn’t even exist apparently, but you’re still vibing
i looked up 'home depot song' and saw this video, clicked it, expecting EXACTLY this and was thoroughly dissappointed
this feels like a personal attack
If I want tools I go to home depot. If I want hardware I go to lowes.
Tools are "hardware."
I use Lowe’s for building material mostly.
Why?
Lowes has craftsman now and they could be getting another tool brand that start with a m and is red 😉
Oh shit, love your videos man.
People just go to whatever one is closer as far as I know. So placing your stores in optimal locations is important
I always assumed Lowes was on the brink of bankruptcy, not enjoying a comfortable 2nd place.
if you live in the midwest/north then menards is lowe's and home depot combined, but way cheaper
Menards also has a lot of other stuff like some groceries and clothes too. Kind of HD/ Lowe’s meets Walmart.
menards is the fuckin best
After my move out of cold snowy Ohio, the only thing I miss is Menards
I moved from SD to NC.... no Menards here sadly, but their jingle is with me always.
Menards should also be included somewhere in between lowes and home depot.
They will take over best of both worlds and they have a lumber yard that doesn't suck
Eh not really, it's only a midwest thing as well as some of their stuff if pretty low quality
Exactly, nationally they only have about a 3% market share, but by regions where Menards is available they beat out home depot AND Lowes in market share.
🎶 Save big money at Menards! 🎶
I rarely shop at the Depot, but I will say that Lowe's website is awful, especially on mobile.

UPS vs FedEx?
FedEx
Personally like FedEx. They come to me faster.
Ive always personally been more of a lowes fan from that being where my dad went when I was growing up. Today, I will still always choose lowes.
Aviato - They probably thought he was trying to give them an already broken unit that he already had. Idk🤷🏽♀️

Lowes is lacking a Tool Rental system. They're finally implementing it now & it's gonna end up way bigger than Depot's tool rental.
*Save big money at Menard's*
Not if you're a veteran, they don't give a discount. lowes and home depot do.
Only because it's cheaper than the local hardware store. I'd have to drive 45 min to go to home depot or lowes.

Homedepot was where my childhood was spent, it was awesome
I feel like Lowe’s is always more expensive for some reason. Something about Home Depot just feels different and I can’t figure it out either.
Agree, I just like walking into a Home Depot better. No idea why. My favorite color is even blue.
It’s cuz Lowe’s pays their people more money. Believe me.
It is, at Lowe’s I pay a dollar per bolt, at Home Depot it’s 25 cents
When I bought my home, I replaced all 3 toilets. HD and Lowes had the same Kohler for the same price, but the Lowes one included soft-close lids. Easy decision 😆
First time I installed a soft closed lid. I thought something was wrong with it! (bought it based on color, had never heard of such a thing) lol
