I am waiting to get a physical copy and have Prime Trilogy to hold me off until then. I am so happy Prime got remastered. It was my favorite game of all time for a long time until BOTW came out and what promoted me to study game design. Everyone needs to get this game. If Prime Remastered looks this game, imagine how jaw droppingly gorgeous Prime 4 will be. I cannot wait for Prime 4.
Soon as the physical copies are available, I'll be able to relive it like I'm back in 02-2003. I was 15 when I got this game along with Star Fox Adventures, Resident Evil Zero, Eternal Darkness, Wind Waker etc. GameCube days were extremely golden.
Hell yeah, GameCube days were fantastic! I was all into Luigi’s mansion and Pikmin and WindWaker at first and many others later! Still have a couple stratify guides for those games in my closet I could never part with.
I never had a GameCube only some games that could be played on the Wii. It was a fighting game and a soul caliber game but because of the controller compatibility, I never got to play them. I’ve always loved the Metroid series and have played and beaten all but the first original 2 on the NES and GBC. I never got a chance to go back to replay those. I played everything after though. Some of the few games along with the Zelda and Pokémon series I had multiple play through sand finished them. But the Metroid Prime series I never got a chance to play. I always heard about how cool they were and I only ever got a chance to play what I believe is Prime 2. The intro has you go into a “lab” and when you activate a switch with a regular morph ball bomb, the “dead” astronauts or pirates (I don’t remember which was it) reanimate themselves and go after you. It legitimately scared me when I played it as a kid. But it was another kid’s device and it never saved so that was all I got to play. He moved and I couldn’t play it. I tried emulating it on my pc but could never get it to work and I’m not much of an emulator player aside from the handheld games since they are simple to do. So the remastered was perfect and the Prime series is definitely good. It’s been a very very long time since I’ve been hooked on a game. Samus has been one of my favorite characters and man does she feel like an absolute unit in all her games.
One thing I’ll say about the backtracking is that it follows a system that’s easy to follow once you learn it. Basically, if you’re met with an area you can’t cross and you backtrack, all you have to do is explore an area you haven’t gone or simply take the elevator immediately closest to you to fin what you need. They’ll never make it where the next upgrade is at an elevator that’s farthest away. The game is more linear once you understand this pattern.
I really wish more games would make an effort to be only half as immersive as Metroid Prime is. It's so easy to get lost in the World of Tallon IV and you genuinely feel like an explorer making your way through it. The atmosphere is also just on the point! I can only think of a single other franchise that manages to be this good at World Building (Deus Ex) and that says a lot since immersion and enjoying the world is my fav thing to do when playing games.
Most definitely a dream come true! I've been streaming it for a week now, just loving the freedom and stress exploring this planet again, lol. Retro truly did us good with this Remaster. I'm confident we'll see the remaining 2 before MP4, which, after experiencing this, I fully expect it to blow our minds
Metroid Prime's immersive scans all over the place were a huge part of how I learned vocabulary as a kid. I was like.. eight, when Prime came out, and my reading comprehension was decent by then, and the game definitely helped boost it further. I already loved Super Metroid, so to have this brand new 3D Metroid with so much information crammed into its maps was endlessly fascinating to me as a kid, and honestly still is. I usually just blitz through these games nowadays, but every now and then I'll get in the mood to just take it slow and scan absolutely everything, and just, read lol. It feels so much better in Prime than in any other game that just goes "Here's a giant text dump in a text log, have at it". Prime makes learning about all the pointless shit in its worlds weirdly engaging? I love it.
That's funny you say that. I was also around 7 or 8 when this game came out. It was one of the first games I ever played and had a huge impact on my childhood. I remember having to convince my mom to get it for me cause it was rated T for teen. I also remember my vocabulary rapidly expanding when I played it, so much of the stuff flew over my head as a kid but I remember writing some essay in 2nd or 3rd grade and my teacher being really impressed with the words I was using when really I was just copying them from my favorite game with little knowledge of what they actually meant lol.
You know, I've also wondered why more games don't implement something like the scan visor. Lots of games have lore. Almost every MMO has just...piles and piles of lore. And I've always thought that expanded focus on lore is inspired by Metroid Prime, but are poorly implemented. And I use that phrase 'Poorly implemented' very carefully; a game like Destiny HAS a little magic robot buddy who on rare occasion will scan things and tell you a little bit about them. But it's only once in a blue moon. I decided, a long time ago, that if I were to ever make a FPS or role-playing game, I would implement something like the scan visor, just because I felt like it enriches the game so much. It is, however, very unlikely I will be in a position to help design a video game.
I liked how Alan Wake handled it, but these are core elements to gameplay and "flow." Which means no one bound by EA or Activision was going to innovate and be held responsible
There are a couple of games out there that do this concept justice. Specifically, Subnautica and Outer WIlds. Subnautica has a handheld scanner tool/log combo and a wonderful alien ecosystem you can scan and learn about, while Outer Wilds takes the principle of the Chozo wall-lore and enviromental storytelling up to 11. I like 'em both, and for good reason: my childhood was basically formed by long days of playing Metroid Prime 1 & 2.
@@ZarHakkar those are my two favorite games, too Lightning in a bottle. Though, I did manage to awe myself in Outer Wilds a second time with the VR community mod.
The reason I love the Metroid series is that it gradually empowers the player with new offensive or traversal tools that makes backtracking and exploring the environment much more easy and fun. Missiles aren't just an offensive option. They also act as a key to new areas. Enemies that used to give you trouble before are now obliterated by a new weapon upgrade. That gate before you had to morph ball into. Now you can just bypass it by jumping over it with a new traversal ability. It gives the player a sense of power and discovery that's not often duplicated well in other Metroid like games.
Thank you for talking about Metroid Prime and actually talking about how perfect the Scan Visor is. I've seen so many "breakdowns" of the game that just kinda gloss over the thing, when it's arguably your primary or secondary way of interacting with *everything in the game.*
Just found your Pirate analysis Video and really really like it. You take a good look at the worldbuilding of Prime and analyse it very well. Hell I didn't even consider that the Pirate research base is a former Chozo ruin until you pointed out the different architecture.
Your notes about the scan visor were ON POINT. The very fact that they introduced them left a gaping hole in every subsequent 2D game in the series, and mannnn I want one in every other non-metroid game I play too. Useful what? Gameplay utility who? I want to learn about the lobsters.
Bought a digital download, and I'll be picking up a physical copy as well. This is my favorite game of all time, and it makes me sad that Metroid has consistently struggled to sell all that well. They're great games and you can see their influence in a lot of modern games which speaks to how timeless they are. If you can buy this game do it! We need to help this struggling franchise reach the heights it deserves
Speed runners are going to love this. More options. Now they can actually split the Speed runs to different configurations. I'm all for seeing Speedruns of the Dual Analogue, Original Controls, and Hybrid with Motion. And I hope when people post Speedruns (as I know they will), they put which control Config they did the speed run in. Especially since the whole movement strategy changes between Original and Dual stick.
This game brings me so much nostalgia. I first played Metroid Prime on the GameCube when I was in middle school, i am now 34. I love the soundtrack for this game also, so freaking good 🔥🔥
I loved hints the first time, felt like Samus was using her ship in the background to scan the area. By Prime 3 they started to feel pretty annoying though.
Do really like that for sake of comparison, in the Dead Space remake they update lines and terminology to be consistent to where things end up in the sequels, like the; “they’re coming line” only pops up in Dead Space 3. But the fact that the meteorite being alive and choosing an apex predator as it’s primary host doesn’t have to be rewritten or adjusted.
I absolutely adore Metroid Prime. 100% the game on both normal and hard difficulty. Playing the remaster was like putting on an old pair of shoes. It's so comfortable and fun. I was practically running through and completing the objectives purely from memory. There were a few times I had to consult my old strategy guide for help, but thankfully this was a faithful remaster and didn't have too many hiccups. i am also immensely glad they included the classic control scheme. Honestly I prefer that over the dual stick option. It always felt more natural to me. Though, yeah, needing to stop and aim was awkward even in the original. But i love that every button had a purpose and wasn't just wasted space. I'll definitely go back and do a playthrough with the new control scheme to see how i like it. Not the motion one. Never the motion one. It's the reason I never completed MP3. Seriously, that sucked so hard. Hopefully Nintendo will release remasters of Prime 2 and 3 for the switch. It'd be a lot of fun to relive MP2 and to perhaps actually play more than a few hours of MP3. Maybe Nintendo will be smart and put all the old gamecube games onto the switch e-shop. I know i'd love to replay Pokemon Colosseum.
I'm still playing this. I cannot believe how good this is. Every detail of this release is legendary for me. I dreamed for so long to play this again on the Switch and my mind was set that it would never happen. I made peace with that fact. When this dropped... holy baby metroid. And it has everything I ever dreamed of. beautiful visuals, a deep testing ground in control schemes for Metroid Prime 4 and 60 FPS, on a freakin' 2015 Nvidia mobile GPU. Awesome content. consider me subscibed. I only hope now that Retro will do the same treatment for MP2 and....who knows maybe MP3. This is surely no small work to update those games like that but, oh BOI do they deliver.
Thank you Reggie for making this beautiful video. Although I have to definitely disagree on the Omega pirate's difficulty, not only did I have more trouble with Metroid Prime's last phase (but didn't die to either of them), I'd argue that almost every other Metroid game has more difficult boss battles and a higher difficulty in general than Prime, *especially* Dread.
This version of MP1 is a great way to experience an all-time classic. I tried to show the original game to some friends but most of them didn't like the controls. The new control scheme should help new player to get into the game more comfortably (although I did find it clunky to change beam weapons mid-fight in the later stages of the game)
For a game that is transition from 2d to 3d from...SUPER METROID... and being able to live up to its title...8 YEARS AFTER... IN 2001... FOR GAMECUBE... And yet still be able to called as such "better then call of duty" This game is a miracle that is a masterpiece... here we are
I remember the lead up to Prime's launch, the worry that Metroid couldn't be translated to 3D and still be as good. Two decades later I'm still relieved and impressed that my favorite SNES game is also my favorite GameCube game.
I can think of another game that had you explore a spaceship before and after it crash-lands. Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal. You first explore starship Leviathan to confront the villain, but he activates the ship's self-destuct and teleports away. So you must hurry back to your shuttle before everything explodes. Then the ships crashes on the planet below, and a few levels laters you must check the wreckage to find one of your comrades who was MIA.
My only real issue with this remaster/remake is the continued lack of sequence breaking from the original. Being able to get various power-ups early allowed you to skip virtually every infamous backtracking section, like to get the Space Jump Boots. (You still can get those early, but it's extremely difficult.) It improved the pacing of the game dramatically, and it was fun to pick and choose which skips to do on repeat playthroughs. Regardless, this is far and wide the best way to play the game for newcomers, as well as returning players who just want to experience the game the way it was intended. It's also one of the biggest glow-ups in gaming history. How Retro Studios managed to make a Switch game look _this good_ boggles the mind. Prime Remastered almost looks as good as current gen titles and puts into perspective just how far behind Nintendo is - PLUS, it runs at a nearly unwavering 60fps. All the masked loading times between doors have been eliminated, as well, including the door leading to the Chozo shrine that sealed away the Metroid Prime. That thing took 8 goddamn years to open before, but now it's almost instant. I'll likely stick to Primehack in the future just because I love the sequence breaks so much, but I'm still over the moon with Prime Remastered. If this is any indication of what Prime 4 could be like, then I'm confident it will be worth the agonizing wait. Retro never fails to deliver.
Totally agree, I really wish the Trilogy release never patched the sequence breaks and scan dashing, I also wish remaster had an FOV slider just like PrimeHack. Someone is already making an FOV mod so hopefully the old scan dash properties can be modded in at some point

This is due in part to the definitions of remake/remaster becoming increasingly blurred. Prime Remaster is most DEFINITELY a Remaster, but the overhaul is genuinely astounding.

Not insulting, just underselling. And I’d rather be humble than set expectations too high. And tbf underneath the visuals it is almost exactly the same core game
I was kinda iffy on this game since I’ve only played the 2D metroids (which I love), and the 1st person didn’t look like it was for me, but you have convinced me. Gonna pick up the physical tho. Metroid is a series that deserves more love/games. Also cannot wait for Fusion on Switch. That was my first Metroid
The first person perspective is great for immersion. Prime was the first metroid game i ever played, so to me the series always looked natural in first person cause its all I ever knew, but I have since played the 2D metroids most recently Dread, and it just goes to show how well implemented the metroidvania style was adapted to 3D. Give the game a chance you won't be disappointed
Prime 2 is my favorite game of all time. And as happy as I am with this remaster if prime 2 doesn’t get the same treatment it would be even more devastating since we were so close in a reality where Nintendo was doing everything right. I still have hope.
Metroid Prime 2 really wants me to call it the best Metroid game. There are days I can’t imagine saying otherwise, honestly. I really hope this game is a sign of both “Prime 4 soon, hold ur butts” and “hey how’d y’all feel about the other two games getting a remaster, eh?”
My brother...I love Prime as much as I love breathing, but the Omega Pirate is nowhere near the toughest in the series. Prime 2 has several things that make it look like an early boss, and I'm not even talking about the boost or spider guardians, because they are not difficult either. All that aside, what a treasure we got with this remaster.
Great video. But, tbf, Elden Ring does have a version of the scan visor called item descriptions. I paid little attention to the scan visor in Metroid Prime 20 years ago, but, after being trained by Souls game to read the item descriptions I’m really enjoying all the info I’m learning from using the scan visor this go around.
Once you know what to do the Omega pirate I find to be the easiest boss of Prime 1. Power bomb him immediately and you'll break all of his pieces off. X-ray visor on and hold a charge. The moment he pops up in a pool to heal fire a super missile. If you're quick enough you can beat him in one phase without him reacquiring his armor. But yes this remaster is amazing and made me remember why I love this series so much
I do agree that the backtracking is excessive, but at the same time, I'm always interested in finding what new doors I can unlock with the new tools I just acquired.
8:12 to be fair, Super Metroid does start on a ship that crashes and that you find on the planet later in the game. Super Metroid and the first Prime are two sides of the same badass awesome coin.
This is a true example of a masterpiece! An incredible location of organic matter happening to an unknown planet. I love the way they remastered the graphics to update Metroid Prime. The different levels are so gorgeous to look at they I would not mind getting lost in them. That means I will not be complaining of backtracking. Other games that are realistic like Rainbow Six or Call of Duty that incorporate backtracking look boring in comparison. You would think Nintendo games are all about holding your hand to make it for everybody, but not this game! It lets you explore to make you figure out what to do next. Other games have annoying NPC's who interupt your game, I'm looking at you Zelda Skyward Sword. Zelda is also a great franchise, but when I played the Ocarina of Time remasterd on 3DS, you had Navi bother you constantly, who was a fairy companion for Link.
You talk about the game’s lack of a hub world, but that’s part of the beauty in its design. It DOES have a hub world. In fact, it has two. The game has three areas packed with “content”: The Chozo Ruins, Phendrana Drifts, and the Phazon Mines. By contrast, the overworld and Magmoor Caverns have very little. They have no bosses, and they have very few lore scans or item upgrades. But what each of them does have is a large number of elevators to all the other areas, including each other. By making two connected hub worlds, they trick you into thinking there isn’t one at all. The world feels sprawling and interconnected and alive, instead of just three areas connected by a hub world (even though that’s what it actually is). It makes exploration feel more rewarding and worthwhile, and makes it so there are a variety of different paths to every location, instead of just going back to the ship and then heading to area 3 every time.
I have to ask, is the Omega Pirate being the "hardest boss" an in-joke? Because it sounds like one, and I vaguely recall something about that in some metroid circles. But I honestly don't fully remember.
Metroid Prime Remastered is the new gold standard for remasters going forward...period. Future game remasters should have a "But does it reach MPR levels of remaster"? in the rating system.
I love this game and always have and as much as I am enjoying the remaster, it still has two antique flaws that should have been no brainer additions to make the game that much closer to truly perfect. There are no checkpoints. And the second you can access the Artifacts chamber, ALL the clues should be scannable. Not progressively unlocked as you progress the game. If they had fixed these two issues I’d give the game a 10/10. As it stands it sadly falls short for me at 8/10.
I do think that Prime 2 handled it's map and back tracking better. It's not as linear as Prime 3 and not as Open as Prime 1. It feel like a good compromise between the two.
As much as I love the scan visor and think that more games should have something similar I really don't think it would fit Elden Ring. It's just not that type of game that spells things out for you, which I love about it. For example, there are plants that grow near water. You don't need a scanner to tell you that, you just notice it if you want to take the time to care about those things. Plus you get a lot of information from item description. Thematically it also makes more sense to have such a tool in a technologically advanced world, whereas in Elden Ring it would have to most likely been tied to some sort of magic, but then again, not everyone is a mage.
Is so hard to know that they're going to do we still don't have Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Nintendo switch which doesn't make sense when we have the other 3D Mario's
I hope Nintendo + Retro gives 2 and 3 the same treatment. I wouldn't be surprised if they stealth drop them like 1 to hold us over until Prime 4 is finally done.
@Guilherme Come to think about it the remaster could be Retro's test to see how far they can push Switch hardware and used it as a basis while developing 4. It's a dream but it would be awesome that 4 runs 900p and locked 60fps like this.

The original tank controls work well, but without the octagonal analog stick rim, it makes just moving forward in a straight line problematic. I feel sorry for people who were spoiled by this video not telling of disclaimers.
The backtracking forces you to reevaluate your surroundings so that you can achieve 100%.. All metroid games are like this but admittedly some are more grindy in feel than others..
Great stuff, but I disagree that every game should have the Scan Visor. Samus alone has the tech, the knowledge, and the ability to understand and analyze the world around her like this. She alone can survive Tallon IV, Zebes, Aether, etc.
Okay. First Gow. Then dead space. NOW METROID PRIME?! SIR! SIR!!! You are a true man of culture!

I love the soundtrack for this game also, so freaking good 🔥🔥
Pro tip: You can turn off map hints in the settings, really helps with you getting lost.
I loved hints the first time, felt like Samus was using her ship in the background to scan the area. By Prime 3 they started to feel pretty annoying though.
To each their own.
@@Solrex_the_Sun_King I'm really glad they can be turned off though, both for series veterans and new players that prefer to explore!
The fact that they added so many options for controls, including the ones from both the Gamecube AND Wii versions made me so happy.
Really enjoying your videos and humor, thanks for all your work so far! New MPT on Switch? Sign me up!
One of my favorite games ever is just better now. Awesome.
And yet still be able to called as such "better then call of duty"
This game is a miracle that is a masterpiece... here we are
I remember the lead up to Prime's launch, the worry that Metroid couldn't be translated to 3D and still be as good. Two decades later I'm still relieved and impressed that my favorite SNES game is also my favorite GameCube game.
Just found you with this vid and you gotta be a new favorite youtuber of mine Im so interested in Metroid Prime lore videos LOL
Finally someone gives credit to the story n lore entertainment power of the SCAN VISOR!
Loved this vid and felt good watching someone who knew all the ends and outs of it.
This game is unbelievably amazing.
@@ninemugetsu Definitely. Primehack added scan dashing back in, so I don't see why this version can't have it.
@@jjtheenton Hey guess what, someone already restored the scan dash and made an usable mod for it! Its in the Metroid Prime Modding Discord
@@ninemugetsu You got a link? 👀
@@jjtheenton I tried replying twice with the server link but TH-cam deleted both comments. I uploaded a vid with the server link tho, its in the vid description
Can't wait for that god of war director guy to say the game is bad cause it doesn't show any marker and an arrow onscreen to show where to go next.
The short and correct answer is yes
I'm a big Metroid fan but Prime was tough to get through to the end. I can't wait to play the physical version and properly fall in love.
I CANT WAIT FOR YOU TO DO PRIME 2 AND 3
Ngl Nintendo calling it a remaster feels kinda insulting just due to how much has actually been remade and worked on.
This is due in part to the definitions of remake/remaster becoming increasingly blurred. Prime Remaster is most DEFINITELY a Remaster, but the overhaul is genuinely astounding.
What has been remade? It's mostly the Wii version with all new assets.
@@pikachuattack542 chya tats kinda wtf i thought tuu or visual its wike smash 64 of the quiltys of prime hunters and wile i wont argue the fact tat on a handheld id exspect visuals NOTZ being HD or w.e but tis....comon tis ish for consol!!! its sposed tu be NEXT GEN NOT a down gwade 😞.....im swwy but as metroid being my all time fav. game series tis...quote "remaster" visual wise its an embaressment and an insult tu metroid as a whole 😭
@@shadowdragonx07 I hope you're doing ok and recovered from that stroke you had typing this comment.
I'm more of a fan of the 2D games but this game is still pretty cool. Atmosphere is amazing
12:40 I mean, Magmor Caverns is basically that, i see it as a sort of "fast travel" area
I finished this game 100% today! Well worth it despite already owning the GameCube and Wii versions!
Agree with ALL. Except the central hub. It's all about having a genuisely interconnected map !
3:06 The developers cared because they *MADE* the original. Retro studios helmed this remaster.
14:27 The bosses in Dread and even Samus Returns makes Omega Pirate look like a pushover, lol
Nice nice but my most fav is metroid prime 2 echos i would love a remaster of that one
8:12 to be fair, Super Metroid does start on a ship that crashes and that you find on the planet later in the game. Super Metroid and the first Prime are two sides of the same badass awesome coin.
1:55 You just want to get in there and roll around in that... Cascading white powder!
My favorite game of all time.
Had to leave a like because of the "giant asshole piece of shit lobsters" line 😂
I have just about learned proper routing to the point i almost never go to a room and cant clear it past a certain point
metroid prime cool. my first metroid game, was amazing.
7:12 He's been outfitted with cybernetic parts, because Samus blew his ass up back on Planet Zebes (NES/Zero Mission).
I bought the digital version and pre-ordered the physical copy
Metroid prime a game More alive than then any other game
Best part “Metroid Prime is the best game ever” brings a tear to the eye
Wouldn’t mind a lore analysis of the Prime games. Echoes has the best lore in my opinion
You are a little goofy to say the Omega Pirate is the hardest enemy in the series when Echoes exists. But great video!
Microsoft shadowdrops one of the best game of the year with Hi Fi Rush
Nintendo: But wait!!! There's more!!!
We can top that!
Everyone needs to buy this game. I think I'll double dip.
Thank you retro
4:58 Gave me a good laugh
I do think that Prime 2 handled it's map and back tracking better. It's not as linear as Prime 3 and not as Open as Prime 1. It feel like a good compromise between the two.
The game sold over a million copies. Another dream came true.
Happy to say as of today 1.09 million copies have been sold!
The uncensored rage at the giant asshole piece of shit lobsters caught me so off guard but I whole heartedly agree.
Bro u deserve atleast 5 mil subscribers. Keep up the fantastic work my friend 🌈👋🏻
I hope Nintendo + Retro gives 2 and 3 the same treatment. I wouldn't be surprised if they stealth drop them like 1 to hold us over until Prime 4 is finally done.
I think they will drop Prime 2/3 after Prime 4 releases...
@Guilherme Come to think about it the remaster could be Retro's test to see how far they can push Switch hardware and used it as a basis while developing 4. It's a dream but it would be awesome that 4 runs 900p and locked 60fps like this.
swwy but if tis....visual "remaster" ish a basies tuu go off im scared at how bad prime 2/3 could be 😥......
If you enjoyed Metroid Prime check out Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. It is basically Metroid Prime with a lightsaber.
I’ve recently found your channel. The quality, entertainment and educational aspects of your videos are out of this world. Very underrated channel.
I especially love your dead space cosmic horror stuff. Was so good to listen to. Keep up the good work and you’ll get to 100000k in no time. I’m definitely referring you to my friends.
Subnautica has the ship thing and scanning
I low key think a How to Train Your Dragon video would be great
Well hell now I'm torn between some boots I wanted to buy or a Switch with Metroid Prime. 🤔
Omega Pirate, The hardest boss in the series?
Boost guardian- “am I a joke to you?”
Now if only Nintendo remastered f zero gx I miss the f zero series :(
Ssuuuuuuch a good game
Great stuff, but I disagree that every game should have the Scan Visor. Samus alone has the tech, the knowledge, and the ability to understand and analyze the world around her like this. She alone can survive Tallon IV, Zebes, Aether, etc.
Excuse me, Can you make a video about Baldur ?
I still don't get the complaints about the artifacts. In 2002, I got to that part and already had 9 of them just by paying attention
