"Beginner Friendly" is such a good idea to help people get into a series. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain your thinking and strategy! You rule, Quill
These maps look great. I love how the automatically generated borders look very natural in the landscape - following mountain ranges, terrain changes and rivers, in general.
2 humankind let's play videos I one day! I did not expect this kind of generosity! You are awesome Quill, so glad I got your persona in the last beta test!
He knows we all want to play.. and so will watch it today. Tomorrow.. we will not be watching as enthusiastically. Still.. I appreciate it. Thanks Quill.
When I played the beta that was a strategy that I tried in one of my gameplays and I had 12 units which meant I could pump some of them into my first city and start with a really strong city.
But the downsides are other civs will go into the first era and potentially take the culture you wanted. Also you will be missing out on fame star accumulation. It's good that there's a balance between staying and upgrading.
In my playthrough I stayed in ancient era very late, and picked up a lot of additional fame, and caught up with everying in the next era. I also very much liked building stuff with influence at outposts (like harbors or taking resources), and later attaching it all to a city. Very cool mechanics.
It seems like the early expansion pattern should be loosely: 1. Found a decent city 2. Outpost aggressively neighboring regions 3. Attach regions to make setting up 'further out' outposts cheaper 4. Found second city once it becomes cost competitive with other expansion, probably targeting an outpost that is at the 4/4 level
In terms of creating outpost/attach outpost-balance, here are my thoughts: An outpost that is not attached (or made into a city) does not provide any bonus. Thus, the reason to create one without intending to immediately attach it is pretty much only good for reserving a spot. This can be done for a) securing a good location (good yields and/or resources) b) blocking off another civilization (either directly by blocking the way or indirectly by having claiming nearby causing grievances) c) going with a forward-settling strategy (kinda related to b)) [d), very special case, using the area to spread culture and/or religion to another faction] (all of those also include possibly claiming an otherwise uninteresting region that lies on the way to another one which falls under one of those) On the other hand, claiming hinterland (areas that are pretty much safe to be yours in any case) without the intent to immediately attach (or create a city) means the influence you invested does nothing for now. You could as well do it later and use the influence you have right now for something more useful.
Thank you quill for shortening my waiting time for Humankind! Looking forward to it a lot. I have played the beta so i do know that i like the game already.
I understand it's part of the Amplitude style, but I wish there was a minimap and I hope it ends up being a mod. It would make it so much easier to see the game at a glance.
is there really no way to see the whole thing all at once? that seems like a bit of an oversight for the larger maps. one of my favorite things to see in CIV 5 was my culture border color covering the map during a domination victory lol
Found your channel through some dwarf fortress streaming vods, but stayed for everything else. These videos are so helpful especially for someone who has never even played a Civ title. Convincing me to get the game and not feel overwhelmed!!! Thanks Quill
Unrelated, but I kept having to rewind cause I was eating some blackberries that were so good it was reawakening decades old memories of being at summer camp as a child.
I'm really loving how this game plays! It seems like Civ on steroids. They've taken the best aspects of Civ and enhanced them for Humankind. Keep em coming Pharaoh Quill! Enjoying this game immensely!
From what I've seen over the course of a game, you want to grab as many territories as possible and as early as possible. It'll be a problem if you can't defend them from other players, of course, but eventually you'll be able to add them all to your capital. And then add your other cities to your capital. As the number of cities you can have is severely limited, and it takes a while before you can merge cities, you should watch out where you put your cities, but you can go ham with attaching territories for as long as your cities can take the stability hits.
You know when I claim Territoy I actually look if the have strategic resources and/or luxury ones. They are for me placed higher then the ones that don't have it. Because when Independent (Barbarians) began spawn. They always go to those 1st it seems. Also resources are scares and if you have them and your foes don't you have the edge. Strategic are most import followed by Luxury. I actually skip the ones in the beginning that have no resources unless claiming one will make the next one with them cheaper.
Strategic ressources are key. They are scarce and later on many units require more than one copy. Trade can make up for it (you can buy other civs ressources) but i agree that prioritizing strategic ressources is important. Plus a lot of infrastructures boost these tiles productivity (founderies, stables etc...) so they are good overall.
From what I have seen in other gamers, after neolithic, it's best to stay in the first era till you have 2 cities with 3 to 4 absorbed outposts with your unique era buildings built. If you're lucky you can even pick up the ability to have extra cities and stay a little longer to get unique buildings in 3rd city but I don't know if it's worth waiting on a 3rd city to build then go on to better the first 2 cities
The reason Domestication was cheap was that the game work with overflow you got the science star so you had a good amount of science when you press the wheel it put it into Domestication.
With your 3 mountains, i still believe the Zhou were the right pick for your starting location. One or two confucean school would have ensured huge science and the 20% bonus on stability for the rest of the game is just one of the most scalable legacy. (the movement legacy is also a huge one but a bit inferior, as later era units tends to have more movement and railroads makes moving units far more easy) Clearly this needs some balancing, as for now, Zhou are almost the go to early on seeing how strong their legacy is. Even their UU and quarter are powerful, this need to be slightly nerfed (or other civs needs a boost to make them competitive). Right now in multi you want to rush to the Zhou just for that stability that will keep giving you more quarters for the rest of the game + the positive events.
Sweet. another Episode so soon. :D I have a question for those who understand a little about this game. What do you think of a Classical Fantasy Mod for this game? So you can play the different races of Fantasy stories. Like Elves, Orcs, Goblins, Centaurs, Lizardmen, Snake women, Harpies, Humans and So on. Do you think such a thing could work out well in this game's System and game mechanics?
Have you heard of the game Endless Legend? you know, the fantasy themed 4x game in the Endless universe by Amplitude studios, who happen to be the guys who did Humankind?
@@eldrenofthemist2492 It's well worth your time, one of my favorite 4Xs. It's not a "Tolkienesque" fantasy setting (dwarves, goblins etc) but it is swords-and-magic level of tech.
55 industry on turn 22, building stuff in 1 turn - insane! And here am I, a poor babylonian who accidentally placed "thinking minds" in my single capital city so they just sit around phylosophizing for 5 days straight not doing any work.
It's too bad that the nomadic phase only lasted a few turns. It would be nice to see a civilization game that actually models how nomadic societies work, instead of shoe-horning everything into a city-building model.
Still not convinced to buy this over Civ6 which I already own. It's 49.99 USD and I don't see how this itches something that Civ 6 already doesn't. Anybody have any insight?
I mean, it is a different game. The ways your civ changes trough the eras is interesting and fresh, and there are some cool concepts, like war support. However, the game gets worse the longer you play it. Pollution is a broken afterthought. religion is almost a non-feature as you really cant affect it (other than building a few temples and wonders, and adopt a few civics). And I really hate the forced simultaneous turns (it is not a hybrid system either, like Civ VI). So, I don't know. I mean, I really did not like Civ VI at all, and have only played it 500 huyrs, compared to 1500 hours of civ V and 4000+ hours of civ IV. So, personally I like this way more than Civ VI, but not sure if I would recommend it.
I find the game lacking in depth. (nothing i have not seen before). Also Humankind relies heavily on systems that worked in ES2 just fine. It is great, just not as great as it could have been. For me Civ (or Old World) are still king. The only fun new addition to Humankind is the Prehistoric age. After that it plays just as an ordinary 4x. I would say a decent 7 for me.
I want a mod that removes prehistoric, as it is just based on luck. It does not fit the rest of the game. They need to change it, or i would rather just start in ancient.
Seriously? The only similarities are FIMS, and territories. The way you settle cities is different, the way cities grow is different, the way you do combat is different, the way you research tech is different, the way you do combat is similar, but different. You aren’t locked into playing one faction the entire game, and you upgrade to new units rather than just equipping your old units with the next color of rocks.

With hunting and curiositys it seemed easier to grow your pop in the neolitich era. That might be a reason to not beelining for a civ.

Attaching outposts gets expensive very quickly, so getting a second city up and running once you've claimed 3 or so territories is very important.
This sounds good from what I've played so far. Need to make sure I keep influence up to claim more territory.
