With the Neolithic Age and "Not much of a reason to though" in regards to adopting the first cultural identity - there are legacy traits which come from maxing out each of the stars for the Neolithic era, which in this play-through Quill had completed one, and was one star off doing so for another. It might have been ideal then to wait until he got the other legacy trait, and then choose his first culture. The other side to that is the culture you want to play first might not be available if you wait too long. [edit: As pointed out below this is incorrect and was per the beta version of the game and not the release version.]
This is what I had thought and then came to comments to check haha. I moved too fast in my first playthrough but slowed down in the second (balancing maxing benefits from each era while trying to move along quickly enough to get a civ I wanted) and it really made a big difference.
@@bumblewoot You do, I think you got them from the others in a beta version. Completing them still earns fame though. Science is the one you're probably most likely to want to delay for, but the others could well be worth a small delay I think.
I've tried to get into civ 6 (failed) and europa universalis (failed) and just recently I got Hearts of Iron IV, haven't played enough but this game has been pretty cool so far.
24:30 I disagree that there's not much of a reason to stick around in an old era: if you move on right away without finishing stars you're close to earning, you're giving up opportunities to earn fame, which is how you actually win the game. As an example, you were 1 point of population away from getting the growth star, which would have been fairly easy to get in a turn or two. Ultimately it probably won't make a huge difference here, but I think especially in later eras it's important to finish up stars before advancing.
Plus, once you advance to Ancient, your nomadic units auto-upgrade to scouts, losing their ability to grow via food. In later eras, you also lose your ability to construct your culture's special units and districts. Though, conversely, putting off your advancement means someone else might advance before you and steal a culture that you had your eye on, so it's not like you can set up a general rule.
The biggest problem with Civ 6 is the feeling of feature bloat. In theory the features added to Civ with Civ 6 should have me swooning, but the game just turns me off. I feel like Firaxis built too much upon the foundation of Civilization without expanding that foundation, leaving the features feeling like a jumble of mechanics you need to interact with in order to get to the fun instead of a unified experience and of course the AI and by extension the singleplayer experience suffers for it. Humankind on the other hand, from my early experience (I played with the Open Dev), feels like what Civ 6 could've been like if you stripped away all the preconceived notions of what a Civilization game is supposed to be like.
You nailed it. Civilization feels like it peaked long time ago, the new installments are just more and more and more for the sake of releasing a new game.
the biggest problem with Civ anything is you get stuck just building stuff in towns. if you take any time going militant you fall so far behind it isn't funny. and it takes so long to get to an enemy turn wise that building the unit is a waste of time. i rarely get into wars. The only way to get to "FUN" is to use marathon tech and quick build times. which requires you to add in some mods to deal with your inevitable $ problems and attitude problems that have also been installed to do everything possible to deter war fare.
I was on the fence when watching his live video a few days ago. I prefer this video with him explaining things. I'm more into the game now where as the other one I felt a little lost and disinterested as a result. I'm not sure if I'll like it as much as civ6, but it looks good enough to pick up. I'm in the middle of an rpg game right now, so I want to finish that first.
@@JimmyMon666 that's reasonable, I have been avoiding a lot of videos because I want to learn on my own and not spoil things for say, What RPG are you playing?

It amuses me quill says to focus on one star in the neolithic as if it's possible to control whether you run into food or science curiosities. ANYWAY a bit of a note about outposts and the neolithic era: outposts have a cost based on number of outposts and distance from the nearest city. Since you don't have any cities in the neolithic era, that's just a flat "number of outposts" cost and distance doesn't matter, so it can be beneficial to make your second some distance from the first as a forward settle if you see a good resource spot. If you actually manage to scrounge up enough influence for a third, though, it'll be cheaper to hold it and set up an outpost next to your fist city, though.
What I am interested in is whether the things that torqued me in the Civ games happen, like having a b-52 shot down by a unit firing wheellock pistols at it.
As someone whos played like 100 hours already i can tell you that even a 2 point difference in a unit is huge. Esspecially with the late medieval era carracks the gap between just them is insane with only one star veterency

If I'm not mistaken, you get to choose the neolithic legacy trait if (and just if) you get the knowledge star, as the game tells you at 5:01. Still have to try it out, but I believe delaying your ancient era by 3-4 turns to achieve that is totally worth it.
