Creating a quick Unreal Engine 4 Cave Entrance Scene

  • Quick scene I put together in Unreal Engine 4. Scene took me a little less than 2 hours from start to finish.
    I did NOT create the actual art assets used in this video, they were created entirely by Epic Games.
    All music in the video is from the Unreal Tournament 2004 soundtrack.

Finally pirate or buy yourself photoshop 5+ (any earlier version is not worth getting) Look up tutorials on sculpting rocks, making trees, and creating textures and making foliage and your good to go. He sculpted the landscape himself so you don't have to worry about realistic landscape. Sculpting and lighting will be the fastest part of a simple nature scene like this.

    Really awesome scene. Thanks for uploading! I'm new to Unreal Engine, so here's a noob question: You place lots of mesh objects where they overlap each other (like rocks intersecting with each other, etc). Does having these hidden polygons in the scene affect the overall performance at run time, or does the unreal engine not worry about them if they are hidden?

    • @evilmrfrank
      @evilmrfrank  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unreal Engine will render the entire mesh even if a small corner of the mesh is visible. It is pretty common practice to have meshes overlap with hidden polys but as long as your not going crazy with it its not something that will have a very noticeable effect on performance.

  • @KyleFN
    @KyleFN 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice! I really need to put down Unity for a bit and pick up UE 4 and start monkeying with it.
    One quick question... What were you "painting" onto the cave walls?

    • @CrushaKRool
      @CrushaKRool 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the Material of those rock meshes interpolates between different textures depending on the vertex color. So he was probably painting the vertices to get some different textures (mossy, etc.) blended in there.

    • @KyleFN
      @KyleFN 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It goes so fast I didn't see him do any brush selection, so I wasn't sure. So it was some sort of automated blending of textures between meshes? Interesting.
      One thing though, and maybe we have different definitions here, but I'm confused. Did you mean to say faces, instead of vertices? Faces can be painted as they have dimensions, vertices are a single point in 3D space that comprise no physical dimensions. They're just markers for points in space...??? I'm guessing you meant to say faces, unless I'm totally misunderstanding you.

    • @KyleFN
      @KyleFN 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JohnHackfresse baller ... I'm in college so I've been trying to be cheap, but I may have to break down and shell out for it. Since I'm in school for Video Game Design the college keeps promising us UE4 on the Game Lab computers so I've been holding out. But because of some weirdness in the way they do Unreal licensing my college hasn't been able to acquire licenses yet, and I'm getting impatient. :D

    • @CrushaKRool
      @CrushaKRool 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Vertex Painting basically stores color data (a vector with 4 float values) with every vertex of the mesh. The Material can then access these values.
      I am not too deep in that subject myself, so I hope I can explain it somewhat correctly: in the world of shader programming, you can distinguish between the vertex shader pass and the fragment/pixel shader pass of rendering. The vertex shader function is called for every vertex of a mesh and gets some data about that vertex passed as argument. It can modify the visual location of geometry that way. And it can also store that vertex data temporarily to pass it on to the fragment shader, so it can work with that.
      The fragment shader is called for every single pixel of a face that is supposed to be rendered on the screen. Now the question would be of course: if the vertex shader only got called for each vertex, then the data that it stored for use in the fragment shader can't really be accurate enough, since there are a lot more pixels to be rendered than there are vertices on a mesh and the pixels are in-between the actual vertices, right? The neat thing is that the fragment shader automatically interpolates the values that got stored by the vertex shader depending on the distance of the pixel to the respective vertices that make up the face of that pixel, as well as the data that got stored for each of these vertices.
      Example: if you painted one vertex white and left the other two black, then you still would get a grayscale that goes from white to black the further the pixel is away from that white vertex. You basically get the full color range and only need to store color information for three vertices per face, rather than per texel if you were to use actual texture painting. :)
      (That was probably a pretty naive explanation because modern shaders programs use something like a surface shader instead of vertex and fragment because the latter don't really support complex lighting information, as far as I know. But it's probably enough to get a vague understanding. Thanks to the Material Editor, we don't really need to know the details.)

      Just open up the Cave Effects demo that Epic Games released for free a while back, the water was taken out of there. They basically use two sheets of water, a transparent one that doesn't reflect, and an opaque water below that that reflects.

    Why did you overlay 3d objects?, Does it make slow and heavy the simulation on the engine?

    This is what I love about building games in engines. I love building the levels, making them look how YOU want them... If this is all it took to be a game dev, I would definitely be doing that. The problem is, you also have to know how to code and script, which I have no interest in. I would just want to be a graphic designer.

      You don't have to know coding and scripting if your interested in the art side of things.

      Hey i had one question uhm this right here what you're doing is like being environment artist? If so does this role take care of textures colors backgrounds and polishing graphics?
      And i also wanted to know how its like to being an environment artist in a company like DICE do they like to tell you what they want?
      example:Go ahead and make me a very cool forest environment or make me a beach?Is that how it works?
      Thanks

      BergTutorials I'm actually a level designer but as to who's job it is to do these kinds of art passes changes depending on what studio you work at. Some studios have environment artists doing them, some level designers, some level artists, it really varies. In terms of creating the actual assets used in the environment and the textures it is the job of the environment artists, polishing graphics is a mixture of a lot of people/disciplines. I can't tell you how DICE works as I've never worked there and each company has their own way of doing things but it is a little difficult answering the question as its a lot more complex than just being asked to do things. Some companies give you a lot more creative freedom than others, a lot of it also depends on your actual position and seniority in the gaming industry and company your in. While it is normal to get directions from leads in terms of what is required or wanted it is not normal to be told every little detail on how to do something, but again it depends on the situation. In most well run companies you are expected to be a professional and to know what your doing so you will not have your hand held for you. That being said game development is also entirely a team based profession so your not going to be calling all of the shots on your work, most things come through multiple interactions with several different people from start to finish no matter what department your in.

      evilmrfrank So environment artist are the ones who work with the graphics on buildings,weapons,surface,terrain etc?Because im interested in getting into that career,but i wanna work with the graphics so work with the engine and stuff.But if environment artist doesnt do that then who does?

    • @evilmrfrank
      @evilmrfrank  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Environment artists create the actual art assets like rocks, and buildings, and cars. Basically if it is a 3D environmental prop it is the environment artists job to make it. At many studios their job is also to do the art passes on levels using these made props.

    If I wanna create assets like trees, mountain barriers, is it possible to create in engine itself or should I use software's such as maya ?

    • @evilmrfrank
      @evilmrfrank  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should probably go with Maya, the mountains you can create using the landscape tool in editor though. The trees you can make in maya but there is also an awesome tool to help with making trees called SpeedTree that is definitely worth looking into.

    Nice, I tried to do simmilar things in cryeninge 3 but the engine is just to limiting. Especially when writing some code. Is unreal engine 4 an easy to start engine or not? I have tried UE3 and its was pretty doable.

      @evilmrfrank  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      jashelps If you are familiar with game engines it should be very easy to make the move to UE4

      Ok I will try it out this vacation. I have tried unity 5 already and I like it. I have tried UE4 for about an hour and so far it has the functions I like about unity and cryenigne I still need to find the spletmapfunction or an add-on for it and I'm sold.

    Hey, how did you get all the assets, for some reason whenever I load a new map I have nothing in my content browser. Not even the default meshes.

    • @evilmrfrank
      @evilmrfrank  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late response! The assets all came from the free cave effects demo released on the marketplace by Epic Games. You may have selected the option when creating a new project to create a blank project or to not install starter content. You may also want to check the filters in the content browser or check the view options at the bottom right of the content browser as those settings can sometimes hide meshes or other objects in the content browser.

    The problem with a scene like this, is that if you were to actually create a huge cave, the models themselves would too heavy and therefore cause low FPS.
