It depends on the junction your dealing with if the edges of the junction are rounded you can get away with second gear as it’s known as a “open junction” but if the edges of it are square “pointy and sharp edges” this indicates that it’s a closed junction that won’t open up to you until you get closer to it which means you have to go slower so for this 1st gear is best of course baring in mind other potential hazards like other road users, pedestrians and cyclists

The instructor is wrong to allow him to stay in second gear and drive so slowly. He is also wrong to refer to the right-hand lane of two lanes as the fast lane, it is the outside lane.
