Thanks for the video! The sync button is meant to only for matching the BPM between both tracks if they happen to be different. Having the two songs beat matched perfectly entirely depends on your timing when hitting play and when the down beat is in relation to the start of the track. Then the pitch bend buttons are used to nudge your song to match the other one, when your timing isn’t perfect.
I’ve been dj’ing since 1994. House, Breaks, Techno and eventually for fun different kinds of subculture music. This function was a huge part of me buying the MKII. That and the balanced outputs and waveform editing. I had just bought the SX a little more than a year ago so when I said it was a huge part, yeah it really really was I basically had to buy the SP twice. The advice given about the nudge is completely correct. It also functions in longer mixes as a nudge to keep it on during the mix. No matter what that BPM screen says the longer your mixes the more likely your beats are to float. However, it should only be used in a Hail Mary because it does change the pitch and sounds like shit when trying to achieve proper technical mixes. You actually need to learn to head off floating beats by hearing them coming before the train wrecks happen. You can adjust the bpm by way of increments on the pads there or, when on proper DJ gear, the pitch control. This takes development of your ear and corresponding ability to hear two things at once but also hear them as one. Its not as confusing as it sounds. Its much harder than it sounds. So if the BPMs are faster and the music more minimal, the more opportunity you will have for longer mixes and freedom to explore. That’s beginner mode. Advanced mode is meta fader control. Where your mixes are so tight your control of volume so dialed in, you have the ability to do whatever the hell you want. I am suffering no delusions that this DJ function is capable of emulation of those levels. No way this machine is capable of those levels of skillsets. However, every quirk of a machine can offer new opportunities. Just understand that in mixing digital you will be relying on a more blocky cookie cutter approach. Vinyl is king, you can mix like viscous liquid and be much more blended. I do mix digital now and with my experience behind me I can get the most out of digital, but it’s something that boxes you in and your style will be hampered by that. On the bright side the kind of culture around the SP and the kinds of beats people create with the SP the DJ modes should handle what is basically a way to play your beats in a set just fine. Like every SP its the FX baby! To address your questions precisely about if the SP MKII is a good entry to DJ’ing, I would say well it will handle your creations. 2-4 minute tracks will be fast mixes and will be less hampered by its limitations. My mixes on DJ gear can exceed two even three minutes. Now with vinyl literally I can do whatever I want. Three turntables with one track being an eighties pop song mixing right through breaks and tracks dropping things starting and ending I decide the rules, on really good gear… No problem. Is the SP going to be adequate for you on your entering into becoming a DJ. No, not really beyond the beginning steps. You’ll learn some stuff you can carry over to real gear though and that is valuable.

Choosing between bus 1 & 2 for each channel on the mixer is the upgrade I really wanted! Being able to EQ your tracks separately is a must imo, now I can use this for small gigs/home parties :)
I waited so long that I forgot how to use this thing, lost the new skins I'd bought, lost the cover and had given up ok n this machine. Now I hear from Vintage King that I'm first in line and it's shipped. What a way to go.
DJing is a great way to see how tracks contrast from one another. A great way to inspiration from tracks to sample or attempt to recreate in your own way. I pay attention to music so much more when I DJ. I can get lost but some thing will grab my attention in a track too.
If you want to start djing I'd recommend buying dj decks. It looks harder to dj on the mk2 than it would be on decks. Once you understand how to use decks, djing on the mk2 will be easier
I'm thinking of getting that DJM 750 for my dawless set ups and also something that's flexible with actual DJing if I want to jump into that down the line- it's just a really versatile mixer.
Just cancelled my order, I have too much gear and I might as wait a year or two until they are more available and just focus on all the gear I have already.

You can DEF hook up with your MPC one. I don't know where to start on getting the best out of this set up lol. I would maybe suggest using the sp as a master FX unit and the MPC one as your brain. As for the denon prime- i'm not super familiar with DJ gear so i'm not sure on this one.
I've been searching high and low for an answer and I hope someone here can help. As a fulltime "USB-strictly-CDJ DJ" which SP should I buy to launch loops and one shots OVER records being played. I feel like the MK over complicates things and the SX seems to archaic. I have used MPCs before and maybe I'll use it for productions but atm Im loving Ableton and probably won't. Which would you all advise I purchase? Ugh, overwhelmed!
Is there a way to use the tempo nudge function when the unit is not in DJ mode so it could be used as a third deck to drop loops for instance? I'm looking for a straightforward way to play loops that I've made with the gear I have whilst playing Techno to help transitions. I'd like to play my gear live but can't get my head round it and also have a real problem with finishing tracks but can make loops until the cows come home(can't we all!!). Any suggestions on how do this would be greatly appreciated. I don't like using computers and I still play tracks off CD's

A question i haven't found the answer to if you or anyone can confirm yes or no.... can I play a sample in any note with a midi keyboard. I know you can trigger the pads with midi but say sample a synth and then play that sound on every key instantly.
the pitch bend is useful when you are mixing and the two tracks are not perfectly synced. they maybe have the same BPM but you launched the 2nd a little bit earlier or later. so you hit pitch bend + or - for a fraction of second to align the tracks (you can slow down the One which Is a bit forward or vice versa) very old technique since the turntable era
that's a good question i've never actually tried that- try pressing the "loop" button while in DJ mode and maybe it will loop. I'd imagine that you wouldn't be able to do it though to be honest.
I'd recommend a set of cdj350 to go with that mixer cheap on the second hand market and have rekordbox functionality no sync option so you get to learn beatmatching by ear

would need to be a MK3, switching the imaginary round circle around the screen into a real physical turnable jog-wheel (simple square screen would also do the job)
If Roland really wanted to release a sampler for DJ.s it would have a looper similar to the SoundBite Pro .As it is now its good for the efx's and playing back long samples.
You can loop shorter samples and even chop and loop longer samples in DJ mode- channel edit. Although it doesn't seem like something that i'd want to do live.
Mickey Mouse mode? haha, I need a sticker of that next to my turntables pitch slider. DJ mode peaked my interest in the SP. But if i picked one up, probably wouldn't use DJ mode to mix tracks. Hey man! Just a quick question. I recently received my 404 and the pads only respond maybe 80-85% of the time when finger drumming. Just wondering if you’ve experienced this. Also I have to hit the pads pretty freaking hard
Does it have markers? or at least assignable cue point? that's pretty much the most important feature to be able to dj. If you have a track with a long A-rhythmic intro, you need to skip that and drop your cue right on point. BTW Bonjour de Outremont!
One more question: Every track is stored on an individual pad, right? So the number of tracks is limited by the pads. They tracks share the pad memory with the "normal" samples?!
I’m so upset with all the updates that these companies do. I’m tired of the bugs, lag etc. it really get’s in the way of my creative process. I use an elektron digitakt & even the update on that thing is buggy.
@@LiamKillen so if i understand it correct it’s possible to assign eq or isolator twice? One bus for channel 1 and one on channel 2? So you can eq out the bass on channel 1 and adding it on channel 2. That would be amazing for dj’ing blending tracks.

my 404 arrived 3 days ago and i came back to this video to figure out how dj mode works. by the way, are those .wav or .mp3 tracks that you loaded on the channels?
Is it possible to use external input as one ofthe two ”dj decks”? I just want to run my gear through this unit for effects and fade over to something sampled or programed on the 404 as I change pattern or projects on my other gear and fade back to that when it’s all ready.
I'm a fan, but 3 minutes of warm up talk is a bit much and it made me gave up on this vid until maybe some day later (yeah, I know about cue points). Just a gentle feedback from me

I dunno if that’s the goal or not but, always seemed like that would be the end goal cuz, then you’re basically using Serato deluxe deluxe deluxe or sumn. If you’re using it in a real set, I think either are gonna open the door. I mean bruh, if I can scratch with only a 303 and a turntable- so can you. You don’t even need a fader homie 😂! @@LiamKillen I’ve called pretty much every supplier known to the internet who would carry this. Most of them have said shipments are coming sometime around March. Those orders are filled. Next small batch shipment possibly sometime September but there’s already preorders filled in line for that. If you haven’t ordered one now it’s likely not to ship until next fall. Seems like the only people who have them are creators… that or Roland dropped the ball on the release date. I even messaged Roland who says suppliers are the only way to get one. They don’t sell directly but somehow all these creators have one. wow.

nudge is to shift one track to sync up with the other, you usually already have the tempos synced at that point

The split bus by channel is huge. As a techno / electro DJ, I'm used to effecting/EQing tracks during transitions.

think the bend knobs are just to skip your way trough a track to set it to the right starting position not really as an effect.

I thought you could adjust the sensitivity?

there's a multi FX for that- Isolator and Equalizer- you can throw it on one bus and use it that way

I appreciate you sharing the important concepts, but I’m not able to ‘track’ all the buttons and knobs you’re pushing and twisting, so overall the video has limited value. I hope someone will produce a real step-by-step guide to how to actually execute on the various action items. Thanks for making your stuff available!!

my 404 arrived 3 days ago and i came back to this video to figure out how dj mode works. by the way, are those .wav or .mp3 tracks that you loaded on the channels?

Is it possible to use external input as one ofthe two ”dj decks”? I just want to run my gear through this unit for effects and fade over to something sampled or programed on the 404 as I change pattern or projects on my other gear and fade back to that when it’s all ready.
I do believe that is possible but it depends on the specifics of the workflow you're going for.
They need to update how chromatic mode is utilized.
Maybe they'll get around to it,.

Yes you can FX the entire master if that’s what you mean.

I get that- sometimes you just wanna get straight to the update (tiem stamp)- but I had a lot of what I thought was important MK2 related things to say at the time- hopefully it was valuable/useful info to most!

I dunno if that’s the goal or not but, always seemed like that would be the end goal cuz, then you’re basically using Serato deluxe deluxe deluxe or sumn. If you’re using it in a real set, I think either are gonna open the door. I mean bruh, if I can scratch with only a 303 and a turntable- so can you. You don’t even need a fader homie 😂! This would be cool if you could actually buy one. Instead Roland made them all for TH-camrs and Instagram creators.
That's not at all accurate- the entire world is bottlenecked with supplies right now and many people have actually received the unit.
@@LiamKillen I’ve called pretty much every supplier known to the internet who would carry this. Most of them have said shipments are coming sometime around March. Those orders are filled. Next small batch shipment possibly sometime September but there’s already preorders filled in line for that. If you haven’t ordered one now it’s likely not to ship until next fall. Seems like the only people who have them are creators… that or Roland dropped the ball on the release date. I even messaged Roland who says suppliers are the only way to get one. They don’t sell directly but somehow all these creators have one. wow.
