Smooth As The Wind - From Billy Taylor's show Jazz Counterpoint (1985)
Complete transcription of the Piano
Tommy Flanagan - Piano
Billy Taylor's smile throughout tells you all you need to know.
Ha, totally!
Incredible pianist. I've always disliked people referencing him as "the guy that couldn't keep up on Coltrane's recording of Giant Steps" to which I'd ask anyone to share their very first attempt at Giant Steps for all of us to hear and compare to Flanagan's
i think its a good solo, anyway! it might not be "burning" but so what? its musical and provides a great contrast to Coltrane. Sometimes just playing something contrasting and musical is enough
Flanagan did a clinic that I was at.
He said Trane gave him a lead sheet of GIANT STEPS, a bit before the recording.
Flanagan looked at it (no tempo markings on the part) , and thought
:
“What a beautiful ballad”,
Then he got to the recording date and was shocked at the tempo Trane counted it in.
Those who criticize him are ignorant wannabes.
Tommy takes us by the hand and tells a wonderful story of exhilarating adventures on the piano - simply awesome!
You should do a lot more Tommy Flanagan transcriptions - a true master.
One of the great jazz masters in the world. Would have loved to see him live.
Fantastique main gauche! Magnifique👍🙏😉
RIP THIS MAN 🕊️
Simply.Marvelous! Thanks Michael Lucke
So elegant!
That was incredible
Yeah, it's crazy good!
Thank you for the transcription! It’s truly a gift.
beautiful, what a Master... thank you Michael
Thanks for listening!
Fantastico! 🙏
That chord at 0:16 is so unexpected!
Amazing and creative piano player.
Deep respect!
But can he play giant steps
Maestraço!
He was a much better solo pianist than he was given credit for. That said, I think that Hank Jones as better at it.
it aint a competition
@@Junglesmells True, but some pianists excel at certain things more than others. George Shearing couldn’t swing as hard as a lot of people, but his solo ballads are without peer. Ray Bryant and Gene Harris could play the snot out of the blues scale, but Bud Powell never played it. You get the gist.
You should get a Nobel Prize for this transcription.
