You guys are amazing and I thank you !! Out here Kauai it is an intellectual desert and a theologically weak and uninterested bunch of churches - it’s all about feelings and emotions . Your podcasts are a new and welcome blessing to me !!
As usual, it is the center that cannot hold. It is well to understand the _zeitgeist_ to a degree, but the recipe for resilience has not really changed since Paul wrote to the Thessalonians that they should love each other more and more and strive to lead a quiet life, making sure to keep awake and sober view of the coming Day of the Lord (1 Thess 4:10-11, 5:6-11).
On Mary providing the material body of Christ in this discussion. I think I heard it from Pageau about the correlation between material, matter and mater (Latin). That in creation we see a symbol that carries into procreation of the mother/mater pre-existing matter being organized into a purpose through the pattern of the logos/word. And pattern relates to pater (Latin) or father. And thus all creative works are seen as patterns acting on material. In procreation, yes, but also things like recipes, blueprints, and even patterns of prayer enacted through human bodies. And so Mary providing the material for the body of Christ acts as a symbol as mother for the church which is also the body of Christ. We, of Protestant persuasion, have lost this symbolic importance while rejecting the abuses of Rome. I think this has left the west open to the feminist critiques. Protestant churches would do well to have an image for women to look to for the importance of motherhood. Directing them to focus solely on the priest and king, Christ, has led western Christian women to seek to also be priests and kings instead of seeing their highest calling as mothers. Like Mary.
Love Camille Paglia and I hope she can come on your program.
