Who Counts as a Theologian? Reflections on Lewis with Dr. Jahdiel Perez : The Theology Pugcast Ep303
Who counts as a theologian? Who gets to address the deep things of God and creation? Tom is at the helm this week and he is joined by a special guest, Dr. Jahdiel Perez of Villanova University. Dr. Perez is a C. S. Lewis scholar, writing the first doctoral dissertation in ‘theology’ at the University of Oxford on C. S. Lewis. Wrapping up our Lewis theme, Tom and Jahdiel discusses many of the rich ‘theological’ insights of C. S. Lewis, from questions of evil and suffering in light of God’s goodness to questions of Christian enjoyment of created goods in contrast to Nietzsche’s criticism of Christian faith as wholly joy denying. The highlight of the conversation centers around C. S. Lewis as a theologian, not merely as apologist or academic.
Special appearance by Glenn Sunshine, whose personal computer may have been hacked by the ghost of Rousseau during the show.

Fear God and keep His commandments. Work was vanity also not sure if this dude read the whole book. Yes we are to work struggle and earn some things by effort however the true duty of man is obey Gods commands and what Moses and Yeshua/Jesus say was Gods First Greatest command? Love. A jealous love to have no other lovers of our soul before above or like Him. As their is no other bride than the church/Remnant.

I resonate with Chris' despair regarding our inability on a human level to resist the influence of AI and transhumanism. But I remind myself that God is still in the equation and he often brings down systems and ideas and institutions and nations that seem invincible. I've heard someone say (I can't remember if it was one of you gentlemen) that most dystopian films and horror films only work because God is absent. Also, I'm encouraged by Gavin Ortlund's observation that one of the lessons of the Lord of the Rings is that evil doesn't have to be defeated, it just has to be resisted. Given enough time, it will destroy itself.

12:35 I think that contemplation vs enjoyment paradigm explains some of my experience when taking philosophy classes at university. I was excited to discuss and argue the ideas and often felt disappointed in the way the subject was taught or the way the discussion topics were framed. Looking back, I think that as a Christian with a definite and well-defined worldview I was maybe "inside" the ideas more than some of my instructors or classmates who were perhaps looking at the ideas more from the "outside." You could argue that it probably also made me more biased, and I'm sure it did, but it also gave me some skin in the game. I didn't just want to talk about what Aristotle was saying, but whether he was right and what impact that would have on my own beliefs. And I think Aristotle would appreciate that approach. I think that distinction is also very much at play in architecture between the historical preservationists and the new classicists. The preservationists contemplate the traditional styles as artifacts to be understood and preserved, whereas the classicists engage the traditional styles as something to be used and enjoyed.

Nice job explaining and bringing some humility to the topic. As Christians, we have to be vigilant toward the underlying monetary neoplatonism by guys like Michael Sailor and others. One of their calling cards to critics is, "you just don't understand Bitcoin (not enlightened)". I still get that, even though I've worked in technical finance for 25 years and studied the source materials. Bitcoin or any other currency isn't going to consume all physical things into some kind of monetary oneness (singularity). Gold, Silver and rare jewels still exist in the Eschaton. Just weights and measures isn't at odds with diverse weights and measures... currency and global monetary singularity are relatively recent occurrence in history (arguably plenty of oil has been transacted outside the militarily enforced petro-dollar), at they always meet the same ends. Let's frame our financial literacy to deal with real assets (of which BTC is one) and monetary properties (liquidity, fugibility, portability, recognizability and so on). On the flip-side, all financial assets have an issue of embedded trust. The second critique is raised by George Gilder in life after Google (ch 22). Currencies have historically been inflationary. Gold is inflationary (mining supply expansion of 2.5% or so a year). Money, even hard money, needs to expand roughly the rate of population growth or a stock to flow of 50-60. 21m fixed coin is a flaw, not a feature. This is rarely discussed. Often the model is above criticism. Diversification is our friend.

This was always the issue. However, what many initially miss about bitcoin is that it's a novel technology breakthrough in computer science giving us the ability to create a digital asset for the first time. And the reality is you do infact trust digital value... if you ever used a debit card, credit card, gift card, mobile app payments, purchased anything online... this is all done with digital systems. The difference with Bitcoin is that there are no authoritarian operators sitting in between all your transactions.

«Proper»? The sacraments were destroyed, and Northern Europe deprived of the Eucharist for hundreds of years. There will be a severe reckoning for that. It’s one thing to be an ordinary church member who doesn’t understand the difference, another to be a church leader or pastor who has souls entrusted to him (or, God forbid, her). If it’s just a symbol, to hell with it.

Open to Deneen's critique, but here I'm not convinced he has indicted individualism or liberalism. I think a better framing of our problems is that we've taken equality too far and now bumped up against nature. Liberalism was fine when it was embedded in a Judeo-Christian political culture. This gave us a conception of the good, though it was not enshrined in law. Integralism will never fly.

The Olympics have been pagan games dedicated to zeus/baal since 776bc. They were outlawed in 393ad. They were revived in 1896 with the medals depicting zeus holding a globe with Nike on top of the globe. The Olympic hymn is sung to the Ancient and Immortal Spirit god. The flame originates at the temple of Hera with a prayer to zeus and apollo to bless the host city. These games have never ceased to be evil, and Christians have no clue or think they know better than those who banned the games 1700 years ago. Christians are helping the return of paganism through their own ignorance.

As a third generation ENC alum, it's sad to see the tradition fade into history. But as a Christian, I'm glad to see this cancerous tumor removed. For the past few decades, it has been doing far more harm than good. I was not aware of it at the time, but as the years passed since my attendance there, I began to be aware that some things that I believed weren't exactly scriptural. I started to reexamine what I had been taught. I still had the textbook written by Giberson and reread it. My jaw dropped as I realized the heresies that had been purpetrated on me. Then, I started hearing the changing views on homosexuality from a student who was struggling. Over the years I have not only been disenheartened at the watered-down gospel that has been taught but appalled at what has been considered appropriate for chapel services. I tried to voice my concerns to fellow alumni, but it fell on deaf ears. I was the "crazy one." Now that my concerns and predictions have come to fruition I only hope that others learn from ENC's mistakes. TNU, SNU, and a portion of the Nazarene Church are following along the path of reaching out so far that they let go of the truths that they are founded upon. I pray that this "tradition" dies as well.

I did not know that Marion Zimmer Bradley was a Pagan. But in the 90s she comverted to Christianity. Theres a scene in Mists of Avalon where Igraine converts to christianity because of her guilt. I wonder if this was a reflection of Marions own life. Im really sorry that Moira had those experiences in Paganism. There are many Pagans who dont like the ego some Pagans have, that they believe they are the sons/daughters of a certain god, or that they ARE the god/goddess. That is not what true NeoPaganism stands for. I cant speak for the historical Paganism, but MY Pagan beliefs could be very similar to that of a very tolerant Christ-like Christian. My goal as a Priestess is to serve the world and its inhabitants with positive, healing light in every action i take and every decision i make. And this starts by intense study and healing within my own self. This is why i dont join religious groups. I am a solitary practitioner. It is true, Paganism attracts certain people. That is one extreme. But Christianity attracts another type of person, on the opposite side of that extreme. Religion has been used to excuse the actions of people since the first religion was created. It is NOT the religion. It is the individual person.

Don’t you think modern evangelical Christians have closed their minds? I notice it in the areas of the arts and sciences. I’ve been a believer for over 50 years and have had to connect outside the church for artistic, philosophic, intellectual engagement. Sadly these areas are dwindling within non Christian society as well. I really appreciate your discussion and I am thankful for the positive aspects of the internet which allow me to expand in the areas I am interested in, because the church just appears to stonewall any depth other than “programs” the leadership want to espouse. I can’t have an intelligent conversation with most church going christians. (Trust me I have tried.) It seems to me, our human interactions or personal engagements within most modern church experiences are filtered through church programs and sterilized. It really breaks my heart that the only satisfying discussions in my life (other than those with my spouse) are found on line.

ENC grad - originally from rural PA and an Anabaptist denomination whose worshippers’ long-term consumption of right wing media has eaten away at receptiveness to the ‘peace witness’ pillar of its tradition. The dynamics at play here are multi-directional. This institution-focused discussion in this video must be balanced against the corrosive effects of 30-odd years of right-wing talk radio and 15-20 years of Fox News, and the skew of Salem Radio Network on the place of Christian colleges and universities generally. And ENC in particular. How much of ENC’s purported liberal bent was really real? And how much grew up around (but external to) the institution? What were the effects of pew-dwellers imbibing decades of diatribes from Rush Limbaugh and the like (ramping up with Dukakis in ‘92 and carrying forward) against the ‘People’s’ Republic of Massachusetts’ and anywhere associated with Ted Kennedy (or more recently Elizabeth Warren). Nazarene institutions in Tennessee, the Midwest, Oklahoma, and Idaho - did not shoulder the same ‘baggage.’ In addition, I note that labeling one former professor a ‘Neo-Darwinian’ rather than a proponent of ‘theistic evolution’ is a choice. And not one I share. On a wholly separate track - and a ‘tell’ that my ENC education might have ceded some materialist views! - the stiff headwinds confronted by ENC significantly included the multi-decade rise of the higher education ‘consumer’ and the central role amenities and facilities play in attracting contemporary students and parents. The college has run behind peer institutions on this front for 30 years. With few prospects to gain ground - (and practically no nearby sites for greenfield development). But I concede this is now far afield from your discussion.
