      @@DANDLINC lol no worries. And yes sadly I will usually charge about $150 for a water heater and $200 for a furnace. But I sneakily change my pricing for elderly.... depending on my schedule for the day normally I'll charge $50 parts included so I make basically nothing but I can't do the elderly like that ya know
      EDIT:don't get it twisted though, elderly or not, if you are an asshole....believe your price increase will be a good 20%-40% lol

  • @wxfield

    You can test a weak thermocouple/pile by taking a handheld propane torch and heating the thermocouple up while it's still in place. Just heat the end of the thermocouple however and while the valve is turned to "pilot". The extra heat from the torch will be hotter than the pilot light and produce enough current to trigger the valve. I do this as a quick diagnostic to rule out the valve having failed. If the pilot lights and stays lit, withdraw the torch. As the thermocouple cools from the torch the pilot light should keep it hot enough to stay lit. If it cools to the point where the pilot light goes out again..you have a bad thermocouple. I have also gone super-cheap..removed the thermocouple and buffed the thermocouple clean and reinstalled it. That would hold me over until I could get to a store and buy a replacement sometimes.

    great video - I would screw the bigger of the 3 in first (like you did in the reassembly) and tighten ALL the way before the other 2. Reason being is that copper and aluminum (especially the Aluminum thin pipe) easily bends and breaks..so if you tighten the big one and the aluminum is in place - it easy to run into that aluminum while turning the turning the big one and bend it or even break it..HARD LEARN lesson

  • @wholeNwon
    @wholeNwon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm sure you removed the whole burner assembly just for illustrative purposes but viewers should know that the clip-on thermocouples can easily be removed just by pulling gently on the tubing after unscrewing the tubing from the valve, of course. The new one is just pushed in place into what will be the pilot flame. It's literally a 5 min. job. The screw-in style takes just a minute more and, again, neither the pilot assembly nor the burner usually needs to come out.

    Just a tip, the holding clip should be pushed through the inner bracket hole, hence why it has a lip on it (so it can't be pushed through all the way). This holds the clip better (can't move further up), although I'm sure it'll never really be an issue.

  • @DavidDoboni
    @DavidDoboni 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Will this fix the issue were it won't stay lit after releasing the red button on pilot?

    • @DANDLINC
      @DANDLINC  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question...I think yes. The pilot is not staying lit most likely because the thermocouple (a heat activated electric switch of sorts) is not working. Replace that....making sure the end of the couple is in the pilot flame and it will send the signal to keep the gas on...and keep your flame lit. Thx for watching.

    Before I knew any better I had a guy come out and fix this problem. Now that I know how to do it I have done it myself. I was wondering how important the rubber gasket that the wire and tubes go through is, because the repair guy cracked it in half and said it wasn't necessary at all. Maybe it shortens the life of the Thermocouple?

    • @Psych_things
      @Psych_things 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      when you put it back in, the "crack" basically closes itself since it fits snuggly. Other videos have recommended to cut that rubber piece it in order to get the parts through easily since the metal is sensitive and you don't want to put a kink the metal by trying to force it through. I'm sure you could always put some sealant on it after you got the new one through if you were worried but I don't think it would shorten the life of the thermocouple.

    Will, a bad thermal couple also cause gas to keep flowing If the pilot light somehow shuts off? Like the other day, the gas company shut down the gas for a little while, and the pilot light went off, but the gas kept flowing for some reason we had to shut off the gas main. The mail got real strong in the room where the water tank was

    Hello friend, thanks for showing the video it is greatly explained on how to fix my pilot light problem but let me ask you, if after I replace the thermocouple an the pilot still want stay lit, what will be my next problem to look at? Could the red button need to be replaced? See when I press down the red button for the pilot light to stay on an then after I release it the pilot goes out before I can get a chance to turn the gas on. So could it still be my problem with the thermocouple causing my pilot not to stay lit are is there a problem with the red button. When I press down on the red button it just feels kinda weak now when I light the pilot. If after I replace my thermocouple and I still have a problem with the pilot light not staying lit how would I replace the red button if I have to? Thanks allot for any information that you can provide to me. Sincerely Billy

      What did you find out? It sounds like you might have kinked the thermocouple tube. It's easy to do.

      @Derek Sparks Bad Thermocouple. Even new ones can be bad.
      Either that or your gas bill didn't get paid...

    Don’t believe the wire to the the a couple is a “mini gas line”. I suspect it is delivering the current to the control telling it the pilot is on so it ok to give the main burner gas

    After I replace the thermocouple can't I just relight the pilot with the igniter instead of using paper?

      Of course. If your unit is equipped with an ignitor. Thx for watching!

    Thanks! I watched your video, and it helped tremendously. I was successfully able to change the thermal couple, and now we have hot water again. May The Lord bless double for helping save money and teaching others to DIY!!!

    It's called a water heater, if you had HOT water why would you heat it?

    you didnt state that when you slide that burner back in the water heater that tongue under the burner goes into a slot to hold the burner in place on the other side. Just sayin. But thanks. I needed a refresher.

    Thank you ! I followed your instructions, i made the repair for the cost of little less than $11.00 versus $150.00 service call of a plumber. Thank you again!
    Hope you make some easy furnace fixes.......

    ... Recently, after experiencing a few times, where my water heater has unexpectedly failed with its pilot. I figured the fault must be in the thermocoupler, as my propane tank has plenty of fuel, and my oven's (propane) pilot is still working... So, I've discovered your clip on YT.
    ... I feel like I can do the R & R of my thermocoupler after watching this ... I used to do it in several wall heaters, back in the late '70's to early '80's ... So, same principals, I guess ... One question, if your still editing this channel is : I use propane .. Will it make a difference in my choice of thermocoupler ? Hope this isn't a too amateur of a question. But it's been decades since I've considered tackling this type of maintenance repair...
    ... Best regards ...

    Hi - I am trying to replace the thermocouple on an old gas water heater. I am having difficulty removing the burner assembly from the thermostat/gas valve fixture on the outside of the tank. I can't get the bolt on the pilot tube loose. The bolt seems to be a soft metal and now has a bunch of nicks, etc. from me trying to remove it. Questions: 1) Can this be a "left-handed thred screw" situation where you must turn the bolt CLOCKWISE to LOOSEN? 2) Should I be using a FLAT adjustable wrench instead of toothed adjustable wrench? 3) Is there anything that the pros use that would help "grab" the nut better and leave fewer nicks - something like a kitchen jar gripper comes to mind. Thanks so much for any help you can provide!!!

    Did you put gas tape on the connections?

    • @DANDLINC
      @DANDLINC  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kevin, no I didn't put any gas tap on the connections. Not a bad idea though if you know how to. This has been working well for 4 + years now. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching DANDLINC.
