Nice detailed video of what to do and how to do it. I have a friend with a propane water heater and I have had to relight the pilot several times when there is a high winds. The heater does not have the igniter so I have to use a manual lighter to get it going. This is on a mobile home with the vent chimney going through the roof , is there a device that would prevent down drafts during high winds ? I assume that is what is blowing out the pilot light ? After viewing this I would feel confident if I had to remove the burner assembly. Thank you Brain and have a good weekend !

Hi Richard! Did he ever get back to you?
I just bought a mobile home last month... the water heater is new (last 6 months) and in the last week I've been having trouble with the pilot staying lit! It's gas and has the igniter, lights ok... just doesn't stay lit?? Do you have any ideas?? Thanks! 😊

Be careful with propane water heaters. Propane gas is heavier than air and will sink into low areas and pockets to form explosive hazards. In a town in the mountains above where I live a father blew up his house, killed his wife and two kids when he attempt to light a propane water heater improperly placed in a basement. If a place is using propane care must be taking to insure that propane gasses can vent downward. Don't need to do this with natural gas so much since NG is lighter than air. If not sure have all propane appliances checked by a knowable propane installer. Whatever you do, do not place propane appliances or lines near basements.

I've never left a comment on youtube ever until now. Thank you so much for your awesome tutorial. I was going to pay a big company to do it (I wont say who it is). They gave me the run around, and tried to sell me something else. My Kenmore water heater may have 10 more years. Since I new the process from your video, I just got the part and spent a couple hours carefully doing it myself. It's been working perfectly. Thumbs up!

so one thing i noticed was the rust like you did but if the sacrificial anode rod has not been replaced every 5-7 years that tank is a rupture waiting to happen. probably should look into a new one before anything else.... thats if its not a stainless steel tank...

Apparently lots of things can cause this. Mine (5 year old Rheem Platinum Plus) was beat up by dust in the filter on the underside of the unit. I couldn't get a brush in there but I blew it out with a compressed air nozzle. Wouldn't stay lit for an hour before; it has been three days so far. The smart way to go is to do everything that is kinda easy right off the bat. Who knows... maybe it will need two or three of those... easiest things (for you) first.

I bought this water heater th-cam.com/users/postUgkx8G49mV71sAzUl9shXyLW-r3XgHH9EVh1 for use in my bus conversion. I installed it under my kitchen sink and it is fed by a high efficiency on-demand LP water heater. It is both a backup hot water source as well as a water saving device since we have hot water on demand rather than having to wait for the gas on demand water heater to finish its ignition cycle. I decided on this water heater due to the fact that it only draws 1300watts when it's ON instead of the 1500 watts that most Water heaters this size draw. In an RV a couple hundred watts can be a big deal. With very low standby losses, I don't have to worry about excessive power consumption. When propane is not available for our gas water heater, in conjunction with our low flow shower head there is enough hot water available to shower, albeit we won't be taking "hotel showers." Also very happy with the recovery rate of this water heater. Granted, it is quite small, but it does exactly what we need it to do.

Make sure you buy your pilot assembly from a local plumbing supply, or an online legit plumbing suppling supply house. I bought a cheap one on Amazon, for 1/3 the price. It only lasted 7 months. I had to do this all over again. Certainly not worth the savings, since it caused me a lot of grief and aggravation. Lost another couple days of hot water in the process. This always happens on the weekend.

Our Bradford heaters kept going out in high heat (they are in the attic which is normal in TX). My installer said the new regulations have a 3rd safety mechanism where if it thinks it's over a certain temp it shuts off. When it gets over 100 degrees in TX that happens all the time. I hear there is a way to bypass it but not sure yet. I would never buy another Bradford.

This video is extremely helpful, I have been having to go to my basement way more frequently than I have ever had to in the past and was wondering why, now it makes sense. My heater has a non flammable blanket wrapped and taped in place so I can’t see or find my WH information. On a side note when I open my outside cover there is just a rectangular hole there. That face plate assembly where the tubes and gasket pass through and affix to is not present. I’m not sure if the previous owners removed it because they had to keep turning the pilot light back on or if this particular model never came with one. The house was built in 2003 and this is the original water heater.

  • @stanleytolle416

So how do you do this job on Christmas Eve and day? Well what I found on my friends mobile home with the water heater access by door in back facing the evil neighbor was that the thermal coupler was crushed in one spot like someone took some vice grips to the tube. Was not sure if that really was the problem since the pilot light would say on but would blow out when the burner would turn on with a bloof. Took everything out and cleaned everything and this is when I found the crimp in the thermo line. Really should have asked Santa for this thermocouple before the Holidays. I straightened out the crimp as best I could and reassembled. Everything appears to be working as it should. So much for the Grinch's attempt to steal Christmas.

Our water heater pilot wouldn't stay lit. I did all the removal you described, took the feed line at the piezo point and couldn't keep it lit manually. I deduced a clogged capillary tube. I cleaned it out with a used guitar E string (.010 inch diameter). Pushed out a micro venturi I was surprised to see. Replaced the venturi and the capillary tube to the igniter and put it all back together. That was a year or so ago. Cost me my time. You had a completely different problem and solved it like a pro. Just thought I'd share. From a retired Chem Engineer aka "plumber"

This video was perfect. I found a short in my pilot assembly. So just reading my manual, and the troubleshooting instructions, caused me to just purchase a pilot assembly, and a new igniter. Lo and behold, when I changed them out, I found that short.

Nice instructional video! On my Reliance heater that inner door gasket costs $35! Is there a cheaper alternative available that you know of? Thanks.

It needs a pilot assembly that way you don't compromise the sealed combustion chamber.

Probably see 'That Fix It Guy' has a large following or a lot of views. Likely surmise that means more coverage for their ads.
