You cannot update the operating software on the old Note tablets, it's how they make their money, basically buy one and three years later it's obsolete.
Yeah it's pretty sad. I can't even watch Netflix cause the app doesn't work and when I try to in the browser it still wants me to upload the app which there isn't one that works.
Older Samsung Tablets only goes to the bin even if they still works because they are no longer supported. Apple Ipad are better because even the oldest tablet are still supported by Apple for updates!

You're going to have to use a custom ROM to get newer than 2014 Android. Google "XDA Developers" and "Galaxy Note 10.1". It will be a bit of a journey, but it isn't too difficult, and should help.
Why bother banging on about the IT department gubbins, get straight to it, it's distracting, most users are the usual home user who wants a simple step by step instruction, we don't need anything else - keyword of the day FOCUS, who gives a hoot about your IT department's pushing and pulling or whatever
4+ minutes in and still faffing about accounts. DO it this way - 1. if you don't have one, set up and account, and sync 2) step 1, 3) step 2 4) step 3 etc etc etc
