  • The IC 1101 galaxy, positioned at the heart of the Abell 2029 galaxy cluster, stands as one of the most colossal and remarkable galaxies known in the observable universe. This supergiant galaxy, classified as a lenticular galaxy (S0), spans an astounding isophotal diameter ranging from 123.65 to 169.61 kiloparsecs (approximately 400,000 to 550,000 light-years), making it possibly the largest galaxy in terms of size and luminosity.
IC 1101's core, which is the largest known of any galaxy, houses a supermassive black hole-one of the largest ever discovered. The black hole's mass is estimated to be between 40 to 100 billion solar masses, putting it at the upper echelons of cosmic anomalies. This supermassive black hole is a key feature contributing to the galaxy's significant radio emissions and perhaps its complex dynamic behaviors observed over time.
The galaxy was first discovered on June 19, 1790, by the British astronomer William Herschel, and it has been the subject of extensive astronomical study since the late 19th century. Over the decades, IC 1101 has been observed to have a diffuse and unusually large core, with its stellar halo extending far beyond its main body, which suggests a turbulent history of mergers and interactions with other galaxies in its cluster.
Located about 1.15 billion light-years from Earth, IC 1101 appears predominantly in the northeast-southwest direction and exhibits a twisted halo that is misaligned by about 20 degrees from the core and main body of the galaxy. Its morphology, which is sometimes debated, suggests an elongated structure that might be attributed to an unresolved double nucleus or a low-intensity active galactic nucleus (AGN).
The immense size and luminosity of IC 1101, coupled with its rich historical and observational background, make it an extraordinary subject of study for understanding the mechanisms of galaxy formation and evolution, the behavior of supermassive black holes, and the dynamic life cycle of the largest structures in the cosmos.
