My limited understanding is that Vysotsky was an alcoholic. This song is about his struggle with his illness and that despite knowing it was killing him he was unable to control the "ornery horses" of his nature/addiction. This song would have been extremely poignant for Diana as her mother, who abandoned Diana when she only three years old, struggled with the same illness. How she could sing this is beyond me. The pain in her voice has me in tears long before the end.

The hero of the song drives horses along a cliff over an abyss through wind and fog. He feels that the end is near and asks the horses not to obey the whip and to gallop 'a little slower'. He dreams of standing on the sidelines for a moment to water the horses. He hasn't had time to live and can't even finish his song.

Vladimir Semjonovich Vysotsky (1938-1980) was a Russian poet, actor and singer, inconvenient for the state but the people loved him. In his songs he sang about topics that officially did not exist in the Soviet Union: prostitution, crime, anti-Semitism. He is still known and popular today in Russia, where he is considered the greatest songwriter of the 20th century. He always played his songs on a 7-string guitar.
Vysotsky died in 1980. His funeral took place during the Moscow Olympics. The Soviet media did not mention his death. But the news spread like wildfire, and the funeral turned into the largest non-state demonstration Moscow had ever seen.

Notoriously difficult to sing even for very seasoned singers with decades of experience! As you already know, Diana doesn't just sing a song, she experiences all the emotions as if it were about herself.
This was Vladimir Vysotsky's way of relating his own life experiences. Renowned for burning the candle at both ends AND in the middle, such was his life, wild and reckless! This song explains what it's like to continue a reckless life even when you know it's killing you, the thrashing of the horses even while trying to slow them down. Trying to buy more time while using it at a furious pace. It killed Vysotsky of course. I've known such people and I'm sure you guys have too?

My limited understanding is that Vysotsky was an alcoholic. This song is about his struggle with his illness and that despite knowing it was killing him he was unable to control the "ornery horses" of his nature/addiction. This song would have been extremely poignant for Diana as her mother, who abandoned Diana when she only three years old, struggled with the same illness. How she could sing this is beyond me. The pain in her voice has me in tears long before the end.

Смысл и слова может понять только русский ... человек и проникнуть в глубину этих слов это очень сложно...
Я думаю, если бы ребята понимали подлинное содержание песни, то реакция была бы мощнее. Дословные переводы на любой язык всегда достаточно примитивны. А русский язык имеет так много сложных для восприятия иностранцами слов и значений этих слов, что им кажется странным и непонятным многое. Воистину русский язык сложно понимать и воспринимать иностранцам. Но богаче его найти трудно.

Я бы не сказал , что Диана не смогла спеть эту песню , до неё все пели либо хуже автора , либо копировали , она спела по-своему , да , но не хуже ! А это уже очень высокое достижение . Лично мне больше понравилось её второе исполнение этой песни . Здесь она явно не смогла спеть последние строчки припева ,"постою на краю". Во второй интерпретации Диана прекрасно справилась с этой задачей .

Interpretation was actually good versus Vladimir Vysotsky. Accords are very simple. This two guys definitely not familiar with so called Rasputin style and so called Russian dramatic culture.
