Bottom line: IMO TRD Off-Road w/KDSS is the clear winner for handling, both on/off road. PRO wins for color rareness, resale value and stock suspension. If I'd do it over again, I'd buy an Off-Road Premium with KDSS and use the money saved for mods.

I have a 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road and my husband has the 2020 4Runner TRD Pro.. IMO mine is more comfortable for my daily driving needs with the KDSS system... Mine is now 100 times better than my husband's because I put very expensive Fox shocks on mine, and last year i installed the Magnuson supercharger (my absolute favorite mod yet).. The 4Runner comes stock with 270hp to the crank and between 245 to 250rwhp (rear wheel horse power).. After install, my 4Runner dyno tested at about 330hp to the rear wheel, so the engine gained about 100hp!.. It doesn't make your rig a drag racing monster, but instead makes the 4Runner feel as an SUV this size should.. It also won't decrease mpg (unless you have a heavy foot) and you will see a tiny increase, especially where power is required, like technical off road driving, because you need less right boot.. You will be able to comfortably pass on highways and ramps too!.. It reminds me more of V8 power like in my mothers Lexus GX460 I use to drive!.. I HIGHLY recommend, if you can afford $5k - $6k depending on where you live... The best part is TRD and Magnuson built it together so it is meant to compliment the engine and voids nothing, as long as you don't have certain other engine mods.

I am in Canada so had to pay more than the listed USD price, so all in with installation was over $9k, and that is including the $500 off during Magnuson's holiday sale... It wasn't cheap but was worth every single dollar.
That supercharger only seems to be supported up to 2019
Heck yeah. That's the reason why the fiance and I bought the TRD OR with the KDSS - why spend all that extra cash up front when we're just gonna put something even better in there. We'll be doing Kings with minimum preload to keep it short for her.

Only reason I'd go with non-KDSS would be to maximize lift...but I don't do a whole lot of crazy trail with mine so the KDSS, while max lift is around 3 inches, is perfect for what we do. Mahalos for the vid! And the He>i rep!!!! Chee hooooooo

I'd stay at 3" max. That's what I did plus the 1" Toytec body lift. Now I can fully clear 35" tires

While many OffRoaders and Overlanders obsess with Big Tires, Roof Rack, Exhaust, Stereo equipment, Bumpers, Winches etc etc.
I Swear by KDSS and Rear ARB LOCKERS.
KDSS and LOCKERS are what separates the Big Boys from the "Mall Crawlers"...... Easily.
KDSS is what makes LANDCRUISER A BEAST. Since the LC is no longer available in the US many a people are content with the NEWLY released 2023 SEQUOIA but unbeknownst to them the New SEQUOIA doesn't come with KDSS.
KDSS makes a LC 200 SERIES or GX460 corner and handle like a Porsche 911 GT at 80MPH.

I would never rag on someone else for their choice. I chose the ORP without kdss and added a full Elka suspension, high/low speed compression adjustable. It’s amazing. Now with our newer Pro, I’m gonna run stock for a while, after a small lift to see what’s what. It’s all fun. Nice vid. Good truck. 👍🤪🏳️🌈

Yep, loving my 2018 TRD off-road premium with the kdss. Very noticeable difference in body roll. I came from a SR5 premium, that thing dipped and dived like crazy, it was driving me nuts.

Baffles me the PRO doesn’t have KDSS. It’s a premium option even on Land Cruisers, LC Prados and their Lexus brothers. Plus adds an additional inch of down travel

Just bought a 2020 TRD Pro. I love it. Love the Fox suspension. Coming from Jeep JK's, it is night and day. I don't miss the Jeep at all. Keeping stock suspension and planning on running 275 Wildpeak AT3's.
Congrats on the purchase!!! I have a 19 Pro myself. I just ordered the Wescott Designs TRD lift kit which provides 2.5 front, 2.15 rear overall (adding the 1" factory lift). It utilizes our Fox Suspension and allows up to 33" inch tires.....285/17r/70's with no rubbing. Cant wait to install it. Figured Id share.

I am thinking of purchasing a 4Runner… I can’t decide between the TRD Pro and the TRD Off Road. And from this year, there is also the Trail version. It seems a good deal. Worth it ?
Can’t go wrong with any those choices but the PRO is way harder to find. I personally like the TRD OR with KDSS for the reasons I listed in the video 🤙🏼

It's an important question only TOYOTA can answer and probably because it would have increased the PRO pricing even higher.
Thinking about getting one of the off road models. Sounds like you would recommend the KDSS? It’s gonna be a daily driver and likely won’t see too much serious crawling if any.
Same here. Will be a daily driver with some highway. But I tend to get the least amount of extras as it's one more thing to break and I keep my cars "forever".

Love your good find! I had a Landcruiser when they first got that rounded look, 1989/90? All handbuilt in Japan. Drove into a cornfield, sunk halfway up in the mud. That Baby just lifted up, sucked itself out, and off I drove. I could easily drive 80 mph on a snowing highway up north. Miss it. Have fun. And I could not find the page with your remark about You tube. Maybe time for all to move back over to MySpace. Took a beating when You tube and others showed up, but 50 million visitors a day, and 1 billion accounts, some active, some not. Hope to get the downloads somehow. Take care, enjoy those wheels.

Just put the bilstein trd pro suspension on my 4th gen 4Runner. Previous guy had it on his 4th gen so the modifications to fit my model year were already done. Only difference is the front shocks or wrapped in kings springs, and I have icon springs in the rear since the trd pro springs didn’t give enough lift in the rear for me. The suspension actually gave me a true 3 inch lift which I think is why the trd pro springs couldn’t match the height. On road it feels good. Acts as if it was stock suspension. Haven’t got to test it off road but planning to head down to kaena this coming week. Tested it on some speed bumps for now going over them around 10-15 mph. You can tell the difference then from stock suspension. Side note, my 4Runner is 2wd but hey it hasn’t got stuck yet. Only problems I had in kaena were height issues but shouldn’t be a problem now.

No periodic maintenance at all. There is less than 1% of them that may leak overtime which requires the dealer to service. You can research it all on t4r.org

Cost of repair, around $3000... sold the truck without doing the repair, bought a Tundra, but I miss the 4runner. Looking to go back to a 4runner but without kdss, so it does not break again...

Mud tires are actually worse for sand. All terrains are best for sand. Mud tires dig, where, in sand, you want to float
100% that's why we were pleasantly surprised how well the Goodyear MTRs handled this stretch of beach

Nice video. I just got a TRD ORP with KDSS. I wasn’t necessarily looking for KDSS when I got it and only knew a little about it. Most of the content online on KDSS seems to just talk about the cons. Good to see someone not only talk about the pros and how it’s better. I’m happy with the KDSS, haven’t really done any major off-roading yet the but handling on road has been great. My wife loves the ride compared to my old 4th gen with both the stock shocks and the billstien 5100’s I eventually installed.

Woland yeah but it’s a big part of why the TRD PROs are unique for the 4Runner at least because the Tacoma and Tundra carried the “special color” over into the normal lineup each year after.

But - again - it's a matter of opinion, and I personally do not justify price difference FOR MYSELF. I do, however, recognize the fact that many - if not most - Americans base important decisions on color and presence of butt heaters, nose vipers, and other valuable options even though I - again, personally - don't find those factors considerable or even marginally important.
Woland your opinion is justified. You're a practical guy. Those who pick color over added utility aren't wrong either. The Pros aren't worth it to me as well but all 5th gens hold their value relative to the trim level. Depending on your area if there is dealer mark-up on Pros then they will be inflated in cost even more.
Like he said the vehicle is 1/3 on the island so that IS a perk to his ownership whether you acknowledge it or not.
Like you i chose a TRD OR (Venture Edition) over a sr5, limited, the new 'Trail,' or Pro for the best bang for the buck and the vehicles intended use, but not everyone needs or uses all the extra offroad bells and whistles.
I'm actually shocked how many base trim sr5's people pour $$$ off-road mods into. Some use them for their intended purpose. Most don't.

I'm confused. Is the TRD Pro suspension better, or not?
The TRD Pro suspension rides great but they're not really height adjustable like an adjustable coil-over is. You can lift them with either spacers or replace the coils. If you're not planning to lift it, then it's the best ride quality of the stock model options. Hope this helps
Quick question? I bought a 2019 Toyota 4Runner? It has TRD on the seats . And was told it is a TRD , but yet it doesn’t say TRD Off road ???
Some one most likely just took the emblems off. If it has the manual 4x4 shifter, crawl control and e-locker then it’s an Off-Road model
Is Toyota's extended warranty a good thing to purchase? If you put on a leveling kit will that void the warranty? I was looking into buying a TRD off road.
From what the Toyota service department has told me, only if they deem the modification's to the truck caused the problem(s). You may want the extended warranty for computer/electrical issues as that seems to plague newer vehicles more than anything nowadays. AC components alone can be well over a grand to replace is seem to be a common issue, particularly with the Tacoma

It had the 1.5" Rough Country front top plate spacer and 1" rear but I've seen guys clear 285s on the stock TRD wheels and suspension with minimal trimming
Cupping on your tyres? If it's just in the front could it be that your standard upper control arms aren't long enough to allow for the lift?

I would have gotten kdss on my 2021 trd off road premium. It wasn't available and the wait was to long. There's no advantage offload which is why tiyota doesn't offer kdss on their trd pro models. The difference is on road. Handling us drastically improved, particularly when it comes to turns and breaks.

@@aky19832001No, you're objectively wrong. There are undeniable advantages on usage BOTH on-road and off-road. Hence why it's often complained about not at least being an option for 4R Pro's and is included by default on all the top-trim Lexus/Land Cruiser/Prados.

I was thinking of purchasing the TRD Fox Shocks to upgrade for my 2020 4Runner Off Road Premium. Do you think that is a wasteful enhancement? I was also thinking of replacing the all terrain tires with super quiet all season highway tires. I’m thinking the combination of the Fox Shocks and highway tires would equal a supremely soft and capable ride.
What are your thoughts?
I’ve heard mixed reviews on the Fox Suspension. Ride quality can be subjective with guys claiming whether it’s too soft or stiff. Best bet is to continue to research it on the T4R.org forums
The HT tires (highway tires) will last longer and ride amazing on the highway but once you go offroad, you'll wonder what drugs you were on when you made that choice. Better tires are more important than a stiffer/taller suspension.

No, only on certain models, both with and without the Premium option
I had a SR5 that really pitched when hitting the brakes. Traded that in for an Off Road Premium with KDSS and noticed pitching was improved. Thinking of a new TRD Pro. Will the brake pitching return? I'd had to get the Pro (for looks) but miss the handling of the Off Road Premium. I don't want buyer's regret.
Yes the KDSS makes a huge difference in the handling. You may be disappointed with the PRO in that regard

Now that I’ve had quite a few up to this point, both Tacomas and 4Runners, I think the 4R with KDSS is a clear winner unless you absolutely need the truck bed consistently enough for work and/or play. The 4R cargo space is plenty adequate enough for our needs but if you plan to haul motorcross bikes then get a Tacoma, preferably a 2nd gen as the 3rd gen power train is meh. Hope this helps!

Do I need to upgrade the front UCA and rear traction bar if I do a 3inch lift on a 4Runner ORP w/ KDSS? Or will it be able to handle the lift with no problems?
Yes you should do the UCA because the stock one will limit the travel, alignment and most likely get bound up in the coilover. The rear trac bar we never have replaced even though it's recommended but we honestly never had an issue while off-roading. Hope this helps!.

Will 275/70/17 tires fit stock trd pro without rubbing?
Yes it should clear without issue as I ran the same setup on my current 2020 TRD Off-Road Premium with no lift and it barely rubbed so the 1" additional lift of the PRO should help clear. One thing to note is the 275/70 is a E load and heavier than the 285 C load if you'd rather go that route

Yikes!!! So true and the folks on the westside who work in downtown or Waikiki will travel one way 25 to 40 miles not to mention their commute times will range from 1 to 3 hours on a good day. The folks traveling from Northshore can similar times and distance on a good day.
