Physical ergonomics is concerned with human anatomy, and some of the anthropometric, physiological and bio mechanical characteristics as they relate to physical activity. Physical ergonomic principles have been widely used in the design of both consumer and industrial products. Physical ergonomics is important in the medical field, particularly to those diagnosed with physiological ailments or disorders such as arthritis (both chronic and temporary) or carpal tunnel syndrome. Pressure that is insignificant or imperceptible to those unaffected by these disorders may be very painful, or render a device unusable, for those who are. Many ergonomically designed products are also used or recommended to treat or prevent such disorders, and to treat pressure-related chronic pain.[citation needed]
One of the most prevalent types of work-related injuries is musculoskeletal disorder. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs) result in persistent pain, loss of functional capacity and work disability, but their initial diagnosis is difficult because they are mainly based on complaints of pain and other symptoms. Every year, 1.8 million U.S. workers experience WRMDs and nearly 600,000 of the injuries are serious enough to cause workers to miss work. Certain jobs or work conditions cause a higher rate of worker complaints of undue strain, localized fatigue, discomfort, or pain that does not go away after overnight rest. These types of jobs are often those involving activities such as repetitive and forceful exertions; frequent, heavy, or overhead lifts; awkward work positions; or use of vibrating equipment. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has found substantial evidence that ergonomics programs can cut workers' compensation costs, increase productivity and decrease employee turnover. Therefore, it is important to gather data to identify jobs or work conditions that are most problematic, using sources such as injury and illness logs, medical records, and job analyses.

Here's my theory as to why 😊moms and dads i hope this helps, im always brake things down to simple logic and common sense through my own experiences id like to point out that our bodies are designed to adapt right?
Its simply muscle memory! Lots of time in repetitions 😮example,
Usually in the legs hence the name restless leg syndrome!
You've simply trained your body with such repetition until it literally becomes an subconscious irritant 😅lol!
Mine was my years of soothing my lil brothers who were soothed or often e ntertained by bouncing with quick precise leg jerks! Til i discovered it became oddly soothing to me until it had no more use than it became a nuisance!
And a habit is only as hard to break as it is to aquire!
Once you realize whats causing it you'll quickly find amusement in un learning this phenomenon lol!
Hope it helps someone, and remember if you're ever sitting next to someone on a plane, bus or Dr's office '
Yoll remember this ask them just dealing with baby recently huh? You may help a stranger and possibly make a new friend!
Your welcome Usually the answers are right in front of us but we're complicated when its often very simple! 😊

How about Fabry disease as an underlying cause? Its definitely underdiagnosed and can lead to premature death. So if the person has kidney issues, cardiovascular or peripheral neuropathy (also can be misdiagnosed as Raynards disease) then it could be Fabrys. The pain, burning in the feet can be a sign of it. People need to look it up before having a gin and tonic to see if they or their family members have symptoms.

I used to have restless leg syndrome in late 1990s. Had had two back surgeries prior to it starting. But it eventually went away. During last year it came back with vengeance. Started at dark and would go away at daybreak. No sleep til day light. I tried everything. Magnesium, potassium, b12, requip given by my neurologist. Last week, I decided to eliminate things out of my diet. First thing to go, Coke Zero. Bingo. Haven’t had any restless legs since. I loved Coke Zero and was drinking way to much I’m sure everyone is different but maybe try this elimination thing. This life with RLS is pure misery.

I've suffered from restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement since my very early twenties and I'm 72 now. It has severely affected my sleep for years. I've found that three things seem to make it much worse. 1) If I have roo much salt that day, it will definitely trigger it. 2) If my legs are confined at all such as sitting in a movie theater or on an airplane or as a passenger in a car. 3) This is an embarrassing one, but if it helps anyone else I'm willing to share it. If I don't empty my bladder completely before going to bed, within a short time after going to bed or sleep, I will begin to feel almost like a tickle in my urethra and it's as if it immediately triggers a nerve near there and then the restless legs start right up. When I get up and empty my bladder, even if it's just the tiniest amount, the restless legs stop and I can go back to sleep. I know it sounds crazy, but it does seem to me that it's that nerve being triggered that seems to bring it on. This condition is beyond annoying and being so sleep deprived makes getting through each day extremely difficult. Most doctors just look at you like you're nuts, but it's getting better now with doctors being more familiar with it. I do take a Magnesium Glycinate capsule before bed. Good luck to all of you trying to cope with this, and if my comment (although embarrassing) helps even one person, then I will be happy. ❤

Please everyone, do yourselves a favour and ask your doctors for either: pregabalin, gabapentin or gabapentin enarcarbil. These medications have been scientifically proven to work well for most people, without a big risk of side effects. I would not advise taking the other medications that deal with this called dopamine agonists. These come with a high risk of augmentation (a problem where the medicine can eventually make the problem much worse)
I am advising this as a qualified nurse but also as a sufferer (ex sufferer now!) of (was severe) restless legs. I take 100mg of pregabalin (branded 'lyrica') and problem solved! No more restless legs!

I have had RLS for years and a sales person in one of the earliest Vitamin stores ever, told me to take B 12. It takes care of it 100 percent about 98 percent of the time. A couple times I had to get out of bed and walk around. I always make sure I have B12 with me. It takes about 15 to 30 minutes but that is nothing compared to what I used to go through walking for hours all hours of the night, etc. Thank you so much for your podcast. It is exactly what I was looking for and I now have a much better understanding of RLS and more NATURAL ways to control it.

I'm a life long sufferer from RLS as well. As a very athletically active person, I have found that its often related to the post exercise tightness of muscles ( hamstring and gluts ) pulling on the lower spine and creating a mild irritation on the nerves that feed the lower body. Usually after sustained long days of sports. The brain is sensing that its the legs but its reacting to the nerves from the legs being squeezed by the tight muscles pulling the vertebra tight and punching the nerves that feed the legs. My RLS twitchiness is my brain interpreting a signal from the leg nerves and moves them in response, trying to relieve the pressure on the nerves though it is actually coming from the sciatic ( SI) area as those nerves pass through that bottle neck of pressure at the SI joint. Inflammation or dehydration also cause the same issue. Over doses of Sugar often makes it worse though it feels slightly different. After a full day of fitness , when the RLS is driving me crazy, I often just get up out of bed and stretch the hamstrings and gluts for 5 minutes and it gives me enough relief to get to sleep before it tightens up again. My partner reports that the twitching eventually comes back and happens about once every minute or so until I go into deep REM sleep and my brain turns of the neurological impulses to the rest of the body. Stretch, hydrate, take your electrolyte or essential minerals supplements, avoid excess sugar, and good luck. I've been meaning to try Iron as I have heard that helps.

Iron definitely helps. I think it’s why women in their final trimester struggle with RSL, as babies take what they need, to the detriment of mothers to be. Try it, it’s amazingly helpful, I promise. As for me, whilst iron helps, magnesium and soap in the bed are my takeaways from this excellent video.

In my case I go to sleep just fine but I wake up every few hours or less with this symptom and there's no way to stop it except to get up and pace around the house and do a bunch of squats and other exercises that make the muscles burn and then try to lay down and fall back asleep before the nuscle burn wears off.

I’m 42 with severe RLS and I started taking ropinerole, a dopamine promoter, about 5 years ago and it works great. I do believe it’s genetic. My mom has it and I remember feeling the symptoms of it as early as 10 or 12. Was very occasional when I was stuck in back seat of family car for multiple hours on a trip. But it wasn’t all of the time. Didn’t start to become a problem until I was mid twenties. Got a worse and worse as I went through my thirties until finally I went to a neurologist because I couldn’t even sit down to watch a movie anymore.

    • @berylwatts3647

I used a dopamine agonist for many years, prescribed by a neurologist. It is similar to what you are using. Sadly, after 6 years restless legs returned. I had reached that stage in the treatment, where augmentation occurs. Augmentation is when the medication begins to fail, and worse, begins to CAUSE those very symptoms it should be treating. I'm not trying to upset you with this, but nearly everyone reaches that stage. This treatment is no longer the front line treatment for restless legs. I've been trying to give up my medication, but the withdrawal symptoms are truly awful. I joined a forum called Heath Unlocked, which supports and advises all people with Restless Leg Syndrome. I truly hope you never have to suffer what I and thousands of other poor souls suffer from using this medication.i would suggest you Google Dopamine Agonist medication for restless legs, and read the latest research for the disease from the Mayo Clinic. I wish you well.

I suffered this for a few years and when I was in my third trimester it was the worst ever. My OB said it was anxiety or stress and it was all in my head. A couple years later I mentioned this to my family practice MD and he said its probably low iron. Well I thought yeah right he is just blowing me off and doesnt want to prescribe anything for it. I tried iron supplement for a few days maybe a week and it worked !! I was never severely anemic but always in the low iron range and all the doctors said my iron was in the normal but just being in the low normal range brought on this awful restless leg syndrome. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis a few years after that and it all makes sense now. RA chronic inflammation uses up your iron stores and therefore iron deficiency.

I've had RLS for most of my life. I usually get RLS at night when trying to go to sleep or wake up with it. I feel it mostly in my feet, and sometimes in my legs also. I discovered the association with sugar years ago, so I try not to eat sugar in the evening. My husband likes to have ice cream at night, and if I join him, I will pay the price later. The soap thing also seemed to help, seemed like it helped more if I could touch it with my feet. I was thinking that the sensation of feeling the soap with my feet redirected the nerve signals so that the RLS went away. Another thing that helps is to put Diclofenac Gel on the bottoms of my feet. Usually helps within a few minutes. I'm going to get some magnesium spray to try.

I describe mine RLS as a claustrophobic anxiety panic attack feeling that has uncontrollable kicking of the legs usually while laying down or sitting a long time. Iron supplements help me but I had low red blood cell count. For inflammation I suggest a food sensitivity test and learn what triggers your inflammatory issues which will be different for everyone.
Inflammatory disease patients should look at PMG therapy to introduce a new target for the antibodies so these antibodies relax attacking one’s on cells/organs.

I first experienced restless legs in the '80s. My doctor put me on quinine. It worked for my restless legs but it made a mess out of my stomach. Taking pills before going to bed at night. I thought then and still suspect that caffeine is part of the problem. I love Iced tea. So hard to find that that small comfort is something I have to give up.

    • @xwinglover
      @xwinglover 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I agree. They have mentioned caffeine as a likely contributor. BUT I love my black coffee. I only have 1 or 2 in the morning and I stop by 9am. I used to have 5 to 6 a day a few years ago and could sleep and had no RLS symptoms. As I age (now 48), I am forced to eat more natural, healthy balanced diet, almost no sugar, take supplements, don't drink alcohol much (maybe 1-2 a week at most), reduce coffee (which hurts the most), and I even workout at the gym up to 2 hours per day. Even then I still suffer some nights quite terribly, but with some nights of relief when following this consistently. Too much caffeine, or sugar, and my night is ruined. I guess aging is what it is.

Please you guys, do yourselves a huge favour and take either pregabalin (75mg and upwards at night) or gabapentin, or gabapentin enarcarbil. These medications are scientifically proven to work beyond doubt and are now the medical 'gold standard' or number 1 medication of choice for this problem. The vast majority of people don't suffer side effects with these meds and the risk of augmentation is very low indeed (augmentation is where taking a certain medication could make the problem worse, beware the 'dopamine agonist ' type medications because they have a higher risk of augmentation).
I have quite severe restless legs and I now take pregabalin 100mg at night, with no side effects, and it has 100 per cent taken the problem away.
The soap under the bed is just a placebo effect, in other words, if you believe it works, it just might! Or 'mind over matter'.

Any general soap, in addition to a quality magnesium supplement and leg exercises, finally got mine under control. No drugs!

A home remedy I often use is to tie a wool thread around the ankle. I don't know how, but it works. In winter i use woll socks. I always get restless legs when lack of sleep. Not a great combination since I can't sleep when the legs are trembling.

I watched my grandma and dad and all his brothers with the leg shaking, thought it was odd, until I started having intense leg burning at 9 yrs old and the only relief was shaking it. It's not any crawling sensation it's burning and micro spasms if I stop. Magnesium and potassium seems to help a lot.

Micro spasms is one of the best descriptions of the feeling.

Wow did the men in your family die young? Look up Fabry disease. Its a genetic problem that is inherited and effects men worse than women. Often the first sign in neuropathic problems in the feet. Its underdiagnosed but could be a lifesaver in families.

You can get the first symptoms in childhood. My sister is the same as you and has just got a diagnosis. I probably have it. Men are much more affected by the other issues it causes like serious kidney problems and cardiovascular problems. Early diagnosis is key.

For me, all but 2nd of the five symptoms apply to me. My restless behavior is due to my ADHD. I've never noticed it brought on by periods of inactivity. What happens to me is, if there is a stressful situation I am going through, the chances are very high I would have restless leg. This is not uncommon. This disorder is definitely due to genetics in my case. Both parents, all siblings, and all of our children. 3 generations effected so far in my family. My dad suffered terribly without a diagnosis, (there was none), until after his death. I suffered for 2-3 years before the disorder was identified and certain drugs were able to help it. Before that, I was constantly prescribed sedatives. All those did were knock me out in my head but my body kept on moving. Falling down the stairs was always a concern. I now take gabapentin and for the most part, I have a lot of RLS free nights. It is an absolutely horrible disorder to have, and there are many different levels as far as severity.

I really love your sense of humor here! I am irish too, my family ancestors were healers (gypsies) that went around with herbs healing others. I think you need to come & give me a leg massage! hahaha I will try the soap, and other things you suggest. I am looking at RLS leg compression stuff online. Thanks for lifting my spirits!

I have tried many of the⁹p remedies you talk about, but sadly, none of them have worked for me. Ive had iron infusions too. I havent tried vitamin B9 and will give that a go. People with RL are usually deficient in all the B vitamins, B1 also.
Thanks again for your supportive and gentle approach. I wish doctors in the UK would be so helpful.

I have had this even in infancy and early childhood. I recently decided that traditional medications were no longer what I wanted to do. After having been without medication for 2 months and having very little sleep, I found my answer. I take magnesium, vitamin d, lactobacillus planers (sp?), and turmeric. Itbegan working the first night and hasn't stopped working.

It’s interesting that you haven’t learned that it can come from the need for vitamin B1. Also most of us are low in potassium, which we need more than most of us realize. I take nutritional yeast for B vitamins and we need lots of green vegetables for the potassium!

    • @moonmagnolia7
      @moonmagnolia7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Dr. Eric Burg has a video that states this too. It’s caused by low B1, which is nutritional yeast is the best source. Good job for figuring this out.

It's not limited to the legs in some people, I am one of these, it can affect my whole body so I am hopeful of this info. I've tried everything you mention including making my own tonic water but the bar of soap is a new one on me, I'll try anything!!

I had a little fall going on two weeks now. Landed on the carpet, on one knee. It was more of a sliding motion versus a bang! Little sore, but no biggie. About three days latter the leg got really sore and by the fifth day the pain was unbearable. I went to the emergency room, I thought I might have a clot. The leg was terribly swollen and hot and red. Cellulitis, can you say pain? I was given an anti biotic and some pain meds and told to follow up with with my doctor. Also, X-ray and ultrasound both were good. At my doctors yesterday, he had the nurse wrap it, which had some type of medicine. Oh it felt so good! Cooling and helped the pain. For the last two nights I have had restless leg in that leg only.
Don’t know if it’s due to the wrap (it’s not too tight) or the meds or just my luck!
Here I am unable to sleep, maybe I’ll go get a bar of soap and try that. Thank you SO much for all the great information. Your new limping friend...Karen😢

RLS was really bad for me when I was on a night flight and couldn’t move much. So, I cut out all sugar and carbs on the day of the flight. Had a good meat and veggie dinner before flying and went to sleep as soon as I was settled. I get an aisle seat and can move if i have to - but with this regimen I don’t get RLS on flights. Will add tonic water next time - thanks!

Have just found this site. I was reading and thought I havent had RLT for a while, why. Then you mentioned tonic water and I think for me that is the answer. I drink tonic water reasonably often as I happen to like it. I was a vodka or gin drinker when I was younger, I am in 80's now. I am on medication (not very much) but I am on blood pressure pills, as are most people as they get older, I enjoy tonic with ice and lemon, and no hangover. So hopefully for some people that could be the answer. Particularly if on medication.
