    Hey! Don't hate on my anamorphic! :P I agree with your points. I love my GH4 so, so much. To me, it's still the perfect all-rounder camera, until the GH5 comes out.

    • @byronkleoyang
      @byronkleoyang 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And don't forget the price differences of the Mini, FS5, and Red compared to the GH4. With the GH5 coming out promising 10 bit internal 4K, you'll be able to produce images like the big boy cameras as far as color grading and green screening goes. I still wouldn't do serious green screening and special effects with the GH4, but with the GH5, if Panasonic can deliver on their spec promises (fingers crossed), you better believe you can output images that can rival Hollywood movies in terms of heavy computer generated special effects. I also shoot a lot in anamorphic, and a camera in this price range that offers 4:3 mode is unheard of.

    • @byronkleoyang
      @byronkleoyang 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vick Broushet I suspect because not very many people, myself included, have access to expensive external monitors that can output to 10 bit. I'm sure that once it becomes internalized with the GH5, you will see filmmakers in droves color grade more in 10 bit.

    • @techhealthandfood9952
      @techhealthandfood9952 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Byron Yang agreed but from what I see professional colorists don't have the same issues color grading. Us non professional colorist need to master 8 bit first. But then again once the consumer display technology moves to rec2020 10 bit HDR it becomes whole other ball game.

    I recently purchased a GH4 because the price dropped. The GH4 is still a very viable camera. There is a ton of information about the GH4 out there. It is a standard that is hard to beat. I have four other Panasonic video cameras: GH3, AF100A, HPX 250, and an HPX 270. This one is unique and the most versatile.

    Great review. I enjoyed it. I use my GH4 mostly for photography and also to record events. It has never overheated on me nor the battery ran out of juice. The relatively poor low light performance of the small M4/3 sensor should not be a problem for professionals since they always control the lighting. This makes the GH4 one of the best out there. btw: you forgot to mention that the GH4 can output clean HDMI at 10Bit 4:2:2 at 4K (Canon 5DM4 limits HDMI output to FHD).

    Really loved the video, but just a quick tip: if you're uploading 21:9 content encode at a 21:9 resolution rather than encoding 16:9 with black bars. It's the same principle noted here: support.google.com/youtube/answer/6375112 - for those of use with displays that aren't 16:9 (currently using an ultrawide) we end up with black bars on all sides. Anyway, keep the great content coming and I hope this helps out.

    I've commented on a number of your vids, and as a sports videographer/photographer who often gets stuck doing concert stuff, my corp. higher ups think the GH4 that EYE, PERSONALLY own, is our best asset. For all the reasons described. The work from it is great.
    The worst part, is that it is too small, and patrons don't take it seriously. The best part, is that it's small, and handles great.
    I've noted before that I bought the battery grip entirely for this reason, though sometimes only run one battery in the beast per time. Further, that batt grip makes it a lot more wieldy during pro photo shoots, me thinks.

    I love shutter angle vs shutter speed - and I even love that you can have db/gain control instead of ISO. Just wish it would let you have db/gain with shutter angle instead of db/gain + ISO - a weird gripe lol but whatever.

    I think we are on the cusp of a major turning point in the world of videography. With Canon's failure to impress consumers with the 5D Mark lV, Canon has opened the door for Panasonic to completely dominate the prosumer video market with the GH5. Just like Stronz is saying in this video, the features that the GH line has was only available on $100,000 cameras just 5 years ago. You will be able to get something very close to an Arri Alexa or RED for under $2,000 - incredible.

    Bought my GH4 at the begining of this summer by second hand with the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 all for 1100€. Pretty good deal as the camera was basically brand new and the lens as well. Saving up for a speedbooster to adapt my canon glass now.

    I agree with you. One reason I got for a GH4 was because it was within my budget and could record 10-bit, which I think was the first DSLR/DSLM that had 10-bit recording, especially at 10-bit 4:2:2 in 4K and at the time of its release, I don't yet think there was an HDMI recorder that could record 4K. I don't think any consumer camera does apart from the new Panasonic FZ2000, can output or record up to 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 at this price. Yes there are the Blackmagic cameras, but the 4K production camera costs a lot more, and the Pocket Cinema Camera and Cinema Camera 2.5K can't record 4 and those don't have the features or the battery life of the GH4.
    Another reason I got mine was the native lenses, their price and how compact and lightweight they mostly are compared to ASP-C or FF lenses. An example is the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400 mm f/4.0-6.3. Its not a big lens but has a long zoom with the crop on the GH4 and to get the same reach on FF cameras, you'd need a massive 800mm lens and most of them are huge, heavy and cost a small fortune. I like how you can adapt so many lenses as well, especially with a speed booster, like you mentioned.
    I sometimes shoot videos of the birds at the bird feeder in my garden and will set my GH4, audio recorder and Atomos Ninja 2 with two batteries (4K downconvert to 1080p 10-bit 4:2:2) and fill the bird feeder, focus the camera on the feeder and leave everything to record for over 2 hours or more and for 2h 30 minutes and only use around half or a bit less of the GH4 battery without turning the screen off on the GH4. Yes that is not directly shooting in 4K and not shooting internally, but its still very good.
    To me, what would make the GH cameras great and what my only issues are with the GH4 (apart from a bigger sensor which they are not getting so far) would be more dynamic range (around 13-14 stops like Sony cameras have with SLOG 2 and 3) and bit better low light with a little bit less noise (or the least amount of noise you can get for a sensor of that size and amount of pixels) and a proper LOG mode with at least 13-14 stops of range with no posterization in skies, a bit less noise and no magenta/green colors (which I think was a problem with the GH4 not V-Log L as I normally use natural and its prone to magenta/green in skies slightly, if I turn the saturation down in camera) since no other DSLM cameras with LOG recording suffer these issues, apart from maybe noise issues.

    I see you were very enthusiastic about the GH4 and as far as video, yes it's still a hell of a contender, even in 2019, but as a hybrid shooter no M4/3's will ever win my heart. That was won by the Samsung NX1 which was far ahead of anything since 2014 and was only surpassed in some parts of technology after 3-4 years after its birth.

    I agree... especially with the features, flexibility (of the camera itself and what the sensor offers in terms of possibilities), reliability (crucial!) and availability of accessories (including native and non-native lenses and lower cost support/creative gear since it weighs less therefore a smaller model is enough like a Steadicam).
    The S35 and Full Frame FoV is another good point. When I (or the client) want(s) it I use the SpeedBooster and the desire lenses (+80% fully manual, both focus and aperture-wise) or I just use my favourite lenses: SLR Magic 25mm T0.95 Hyperprime II Cine and Voigtlander Nokton 10.5mm f/0.95 to achieve amazing low-light and extreme bokeh depending on the objective (if I need a 14mm Full Frame FoV that when I use the SpeedBooster).
    These positives make the GH4 a great camera that allows us to create excellent results and, with the right set of accessories, achieve whatever we want... If the GH5 actually comes with no crop on 4k mode, In-body Image Stabilisation, Dual Card Slot and internal 10bit 4:2:2 maintaining the same level of reliability, video-features and improving its photo-features I see no reason to not upgrade.
    If at some point Pansonic or Olympus decide to move to another sensor killing their GH4 or E-M1 line, not providing a continuation of these camera lines (even changing/creating a new series to keep evolving these flagship cameras), they will lose many user that like myself choose to invest in the MFT system due to its advantages over other systems.
    If people need S35 or Full Frame there are other options. The beauty of competition is that we can choose... If MFT goes away we loose a great alternative with a lot of potential to evolve namely given the possibilities linked to the new organic sensor technology being developed for MFT sensors. Contrary to what many people say MFT is far from its technological limit.

    With the fact that the GH5 is coming out in a couple of weeks, should I get the GH5 because of the more powerful processor it has in it? Or should I consider the GH4? Every sample video I have looked up, it seems that the quality makes little to no difference and I want to make sure I buy the right camera for my short films.

    • @_tographer
      @_tographer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +K.O. Productions Media dynamic range and resolution are pretty much the same between the two, you might get better low light with the GH5 over the GH4 but with the GH5 you'll definitely have improved stabilization, a lot more frame rate options and better color sampling. It's a worthy upgrade if you need the additional features of the GH5 but if those aren't necessary for your production, you could save some money and use a GH4. Just depends on your situation.

    Anyone trying to compare the GH4 to canon aren't even coming close to thinking logically. I passed up getting a Nikon as well as a Canon for the GH4. Quite frankly, there are amazing filmmakers and professional photographers out there who have done the same thing. Panasonic has a way of putting progressive technology into their cameras and then making them affordable, unlike either above-mentioned companies. Right now, the Panasonic GH4 is destroying Canon rigs that cost 3-4 times as much, and the GH5 will BURY them. In fact, I-PHONE is doing the same thing. 4K is the future, and the other companies are dragging their tails in making anything comparable. So, whatever these people say, they are just depriving themselves of superior tech for no other reason than name brand loyalty.

    Wow! didnt realize that URSA can bring that kind of images. Wow !!
    would u please make a video with topic: panasonic GH4 4k footages workflow. i've been looking for it all over the youtube but there is not even 1 video.
    From SD card - to computer - proxy files (or cine form files) - edit 4k on Pr - export timeline to Davinci Resolve 12.5 - back to Pr ( if need it) and then final export on final products. i understand that everybody have their own process to do so. but, i think u do have a way of your own! - LIKED - Thankyou very much!!!!

    Good explanation about many of the features.
    But my humble opinion is that you shld have shown a lot of what you are talking about,along with the camera shown instead of 'just talking' about it. I am aware that this is not an entertainment or review video and is just your 'opinion video' but 15 mins becomes too long and difficult to be just listening to, especially about a camera ...with no visuals whatsoever(though this is the norm on a lot of videos on TH-cam... which shouldn't be so). If done with visuals, then, this wld have been an excellent video.....This is not a criticism but just an observation.
    Nevertheless your talk and voice is pleasing to the ear,crisp and clear. Wishing you the best.Rgrds.

    I think it's a cool camera I just think that the footage looks like a clear cell phone video.

    good content but audio out of sync. As a videomaker it would be good for you to fix it ;)

      you're the first person to mention such as issue, audio was run directly to the ursa mini for this video, so I guess it could be off by a frame or two but how severe was the problem for you?

      I'm watching on my iPhone 6s. No sync issue.

      I have noticed that the youtube app has been glitching out for the past month or so. Its not Stronz's fault. I run android and im not sure if the issue is on apple too. Try playing the video on a computer.

      Tis a shame, too. The NX1 showed a lot of promise. I hear that the hack gives it a Super 35 at 2.5K.

    The GH4 is just "usable"! which is why I bought it and now have two! Sony tech is very cool! But....
    I agonized over tech vs usability for a year before going all in on MFT... No regrets. How can the new A6500 be so cool and not have an articulating screen???
    The GH5 has big shoes to fill.

    the gh4 is not for photography it's only for video shooting please do your research people!! don't get me wrong the pictures look great but it's not for that. if you got a good photo editing software your stills will come out great. i shot stills with a canon t4 for years an used photo shop elements I'm currently using photo shop elements 14 it's a great software

    So, small and light is a good thing??? Just watched you talk about small and light being one of the downsides of the A7 series. Sounds like you're just having a problem adapting to others cameras. When you talk about adapting other make lenses, you need to take into account the 2x factor on both focal length and aperture. Which is a major deal breaker. Speed booster is a quality reducing expensive work around.

      +Dan Levitan small and light can be good and or bad, depends on the situation. For some people it matters a lot and for some it matters less, just depends on how you shoot and what your priorities are. a7 is small but that doesn't really matter when you need to use full frame lenses any and if it comes at the expense of overheating, then I'd prefer them to be a little bigger.
