    I wanted to like the game but this 7:40 is what broke it for me. It basically overall was the rogue light formula, balancing a difficulty curve around having X or Y unlocks or runs under my belt with the assumption of failure just isn't enjoyable after a while.
    Permanent unlock progression in rogue-lights VS rogue-likes is a poison chalice for game design in general I've felt lately.
    It's a tempting thing that addresses the human mind's aversion to loss and salves over the feeling of spinning your wheels if you have trouble getting through the game- But makes the game ironically more of a death loop and trudge BECAUSE of it. VS The "You have everything open and unlocked, you just have to learn how to use it" approach of a normal rogue or any other game genre formula.
    IE: If timmy age 12 opens up nethack for the first time, VS Smellvin age 50 on his 3000th playthrough.
    The only actual difference between the two and their starting experience from run 1 or run infinity is "How familiar with it, the challenges, encounters, items and abilities and itneractions are you/how do you tackle things"
    VS
    Dead Cells/Last Spell type experiences, since the game is now NOT balanced around everyone being on a even keel start where game knowledge and experience with it is the limiter- But the design EXPECTS you to have a power bump and a superior loot pool due to a handful of failed runs and unlocks to really start thinking about finishing it.
    TL;DR Rogue-lite design is not a bonus like it advertises, it's a detriment.
    You're not retaining your advantages on death, You lost them the moment you started the game in a way.
    It's basically taken the full loot pool access and expected median/average stats and power from you, the player. That the game is truly balanced around, And sprinkled it throughout the rest of the game. And is designed from the foundation with this in mind.
    Imagine how tiresome it'd be to play an elder scrolls title where it assumes you have to die and restart from square one multiple times in order to have more loot than 4 armor sets and a few each of daggers and swords. It'd make it a miserable experience. That's how rogue-light progression feels to me ever since last spell.

    • @mattshuey1
      @mattshuey1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a perfect explanation of the failings of the genre. The sad part is we had to walk down this road for a few years to see the knock-on effects in design. It is a meta-rogue-lite when you think of it like that.

    I played it when it was in early access and the first town took me several tries to complete, but I played it on launch and the first night I easily killed the final boss without any unlocks. Most of my unlocks were on the second town, but I get why you have to wait to unlock everything, it's so that you can learn the game as you die each run. Also I love the feeling of helplessness that the last night of each town gets when the enemies break through your barriers and you have to kill the boss several times, it makes it all the better when you overcome them in the end.

    I’ve been watching your videos for a long time now and I think that might be your most ambiguous review lol… I was actually a little shocked when the “Value” section started (15:00) because it seemed like your conclusion/recommendation came out of nowhere.
    After “because the truth is, I didn’t really like it that much”, I genuinely thought you were gonna say - and I’m 100% serious - “because I love it.” Lol
    Anyway, none of this is criticism or anything, just thought I would mention how I got a little bamboozled, I’m sure I just missed something. Enjoyed it as always

      then grinded the first town through every difficulty to unlock as much as I could before going back and beating the seconds town.
      but it was still close.
      overall ive spent 85 hours in this game and it probably took 50 just to get strong enough to beat town 2.

    So I’d disagree with your assessment on games difficulty and progression, if you pay attention to what you’re doing you can beat the first boss in handful of tries, the second one is much more challenging but the point is to experiment and learn, so by the time you start unlocking the good shit you know what to do with it, if your way to play those games is to have it on second monitor and not to pay attention, maybe the problem is you.

Might not be one to do a full "finish the game" playthrough since it requires many repeated runs to get to the final days and many more to actually win those final days, but the only thing that truly requires playing that far is to get the full story.

    "Only 20% of players are beating the first town." Thats a bad metric to cite because its very common for people to buy and not play games. Look at the statistics for how many people beat the first boss of most games and youll find a good half of people bought games and never got past the first boss. Given The Last Spell's first boss is hours later into the gameplay than most games, thats not a bad retention number. The majority of gamers are playing mobile instant gratification games these days.

    wow, im personally offended, this is probably in my 5th favorite turn based tactics game. i wouldnt really call it a second monitor game but I do agree that the challenge doesnt lie in each decision itself but more in flow of decisions and in your setup strategy. the different bosses also introduce dps/movement/damage and other checks, which you really need to account for before you beat a city. i guess thats a lame type of challenge but it kind off works for this game. personally, i only really liked old xcom, old+new jagged alliance, darkest dungeon1/2 and battle brothers better than this. my only real critique is that the meta unlocks are a bit slow. i have like 50 hours before release and 65 hours after relase and I dont have full meta unlocks on either savefile.

    Reminds me a bit of the "extreme difficulty" genre of games. Games where the information or abilities necessary to advance require either some experimentation, exploration, or outside help in order to make it palatable. In such games, the high after conquering a challenge is suppose to push you forward, and that is not the case for most of them.
    Good open source examples of these games are Dwarf Fortress, Elona, and Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead.
    Dwarf Fortress survives do to the passionate developers behind it and the community content created by fans. This is also very mod friendly and has enough tutorials to bring in new players with relative ease.
    Elona died due to, well, translation issues, and lack of direction. An edgy game where you can make a little girl your pet, then marry your pet, also genetically breed her to have more limbs to wear more equipment, or transmute equipment into consumables, then inherent the stats of the equipment on consumption, or using the most overpowered weapon in the game to kill the goddess, and the goddess within the goddess at level one, alcohol. All of this stuff involves hours of grinding and experimentation, and I can only take so much poorly translated jokes or comments about the local prostitute. This mess of a game need someone to write up a plan and clean it up.
    Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead still lives, though barely. Most folks who want a game like Cataclysm tend to go for project Zomboid as that is much easier to get into. I skipped over the need to use the whole keyboard and key combinations to be able to play the game, which is another wrinkle on getting into it.
    I call these games examples of "extreme difficulty" because they don't tell you anything, and expect you to lose. Any attempts to simplify the horrid control scheme, or clean up messy code, results in a massive backlash from those who donated the parts of their brains to learn these games.

      There's quite a few open sources, Specifically I'm talking about Elona +/Plus, or even Elona Plus Custom which further does more to it. A bit of QOL and the radial menu lets you play it with a controller but it is like all things in the rogue adjacent genre is going to have jank alas.
      Also I'd not classify elona so much as "Edgy" as it's more a grab bag goofball mess. I don't think a game where one of the bigger threats to you is a giraffe and a kung fu move is punching with a grenade edgy so much as wacky. It's more patently absurd than "Crawling in my skin"
      Hell I can't actually think of any actually edgy titles barring maybe Fear and Hunger which leans hard into the shock value.

    • @youngthinker1
      @youngthinker1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@InvadeNormandy I labeled it edgy due to some of its humor coming from the 2000s edgy boi types.
      It is absurd as it comes, but most folks only talk about the shock value things. Like alien pregnancies which take over towns, and NPCs, that's something folks talk about, and completely ignore the story.

    This game is just about recycling decrepit buildings to max out villagers ASAP, not unlocking any weapons except for longbows and druid staff, and shitting out balistas everywhere. All at the purple one; piss yellow one just gives useless variations of weapons based on bullshit achievement, the only good upgrades there are the ones that removes rusted stuff, but you won't get that until later.
