  • If you have a pet cockatiel, you will probably want to handle it at some point. Holding your bird can allow you to bond with it and train it to follow commands. If you want to handle your bird correctly, however, you need to prepare properly and hold the cockatiel in the right way. There are also things you can do to make handling your cockatiel easier. With some preparation and care, you can build your relationship with your pet by handling it on a regular basis.

    I just got my pet cockatiel three days ago, he is about four years old, and has been re-homed around twice now. The little guy escaped his cage not to long ago so I had to use a blanket to put him back in his cage, now he screams at me. Poor guy is terrified, but im not giving up on him, and I want him to know he’s in a safe home now

      I've had my new cockatiel for about 4 months and she is still afraid of hands. I can get my face really close and she doesn't back away anymore, but from the 1st day whenever I'm home I let her free to come out and fly around. Give them that basic decency. They know the cage is their home and a safe space and will take themselves home when their done.

    Has anyone noticed the bald spot on the top of latino cockatiels head. If you are worried about it please don't be because it was somehow overlooked when breeding and has become part of every latino's character. I am not a breeder but I have read this in a book. 😊

    • @electrospud9230

      could be the result of using lutino pairs, recessive genes which manifest in the bald spot, should try not to breed 2 lutinos

    do both male and female lutinos have yellow dots under their wings at 14 week old?

    • @RWTHRLL
      @RWTHRLL 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they’ll have the same appearance until around 6months or until their first major molt, you can tell the gender as female adult tiels will have black bars across their tail feathers (the set underneath in the middle) and males will be more vocal, you can have vocal females, it’s just rarer

    • @RWTHRLL
      @RWTHRLL 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      even in lutinos the bars will be visible, just less obvious, generally a slightly different shade or even different texture almost, my albino female has darker white stripes

Do you have any advice on what I can do to try and gain there trust. I would really love it, if you have some advice for me or anyone that sees this comment. Thank you

      I am having the same issues with mine. I been trying to introduce touch and interaction bybusing a stepping stick they can climb on when they finally get comfortable. Its just going to take time bro. I have made barely any progress within a week but it’s gradually letting me get closet and closer. I think eventually it will get the idea

      @bajingo1006 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know this was a month ago but always always always make sure you’re slow and calm around them!! if they’re not allowing you to get your hand close to them then start by putting your fingers between the bars and then looking at your phone while doing that!! they will slowly become more comfortable with having your hands near them, until eventually even touching doesn’t bother them!

    • @bajingo1006
      @bajingo1006 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      if they’re skittish avoid eye contact while first putting your hand near them, a lot of smaller birds see eye contact as predatory when they’re nervous, but when I first got my parakeets and my cockatiel they wouldn’t let my hand anywhere near them, i fixed this by resting my hand near their treats for about an hour a day. If they wanted their treats they had to go NEAR *not on* my hand, and then they get closer and closer and after multiple times they realize they have nothing to fear. It goes slowly, don’t let yourself lose patience. and don’t listen to people when they say “you could break a bond forever” there’s always a chance to lose trust with a bird, but birds are never so untrusting of a person that they’ll never ever trust them again. you can gain the trust of any bird no matter how traumatized with enough effort patience care and love. But it’s always best to avoid losing that trust in the first place.

      have you tried feeding them food on your hand? it has helped me a lot with my birds

  • @stoikusu5084

    My bird is scared of everything, he doesn't play with toys nor he ever bathes, he is afraid of my hand when it gets wet.. i thought it would be past trauma from any previous owner who sprayed him for bad behavior or something, but he was only a few months old when I got him, he loves me and my mother the most but doesn't seem to interact with anything than us, is it maybe his personality? He wants to have more social fun than having fun by playing?
    He also likes to destroy books and paper.
    He trusts me more than my mother, which he oftenly sings to her whistles I've learned him or gives her kisses, I've taught him many words and sounds, but he won't interact with me like he does with my mother, and has a very very weird obsession with my feet.. whenever I hide them away he goes nuts and wants to get out of the cage, but if I put them next to him he wants to play.. I cannot understand if that is a way if interacting with me, or he thinks that my feet or socks are his living friends?
    He listens to my commands even though I've never give him a treat for doing so, although I'd love to but so far I'm not sure what he likes to eat besides vegetables, sometimes he won't eat his favorite seeds when I offer them to him. In return I lower my head to pet him with my nose. He does Not Accept Fingers!!
    My house is very very small, no room for him to fly, only in circles around the living room :(
    We don't have enough money nor we have proper stores with proper toys or parrot food, the nearest one is miles away!
    He is also a very messy bird when eating.
    I hate to admit that I'm not capable of keeping a bird, but I'm doing the best I can because it's too late, he trusts us and loves us to bits, he won't stop screaming until I return from the other room.
    I tried to fixing his mental problems like stress and feather plucking, it worked for a bit but the extreme temperature our house has because my mother gets cold easily, makes my cockatiel very aggressive, rather in colder temperatures he's more chill and playful

      My cockatiel was scared when I first got her. Yours sounds like he/she is getting to like you very much. When he answers any of your commands try treating him with a bit of millet or a little fruit. My house is very small too but your bird likes you just the way you are. Cockatiels are very accommodating birds and can adjust to many things. My bird also calls and calls to me when I leave the room. It sounds crazy but I answer her by telling her what I am doing. I'm sure the neighbours think I'm a "crazy bird lady". Your bird seems to be getting to know and love you so don't give up just love him back and your relationship will grow and grow.

      You can bath your tiels if they loves to. But don't force them to bathe. Regular shower helps to reduce dander.
