  • I made a video about bringing a cockatiel home for the first time. I am used to budgies my whole life and wanted to step it up. I made a timelapse of the first 10 days in our home. He was not so vocal and lively at first, which gave me a lot of worries if he would be sick or wouldn't settle in in our house with humans rather then other birds. We also considered gathering him a buddy if he wouldn't get used to us. But after 10 days he acclimatized and got used to us!
Hopefully this video gives you an impression of our first 10 days with our cockatiel. It can vary per bird how it responds to a new situation, so it's just an example of what it could look like.

Don't worry if they aren't too loud Since cockatiel females are known to be real quiet (for a bird!) Just make sure they are Active and curious

Nothing like the sound of a happy cockatiel as far as bird sounds go... I miss my little buddies

He's not freaking out on that first flight, hes just getting used to his wings. You're doing everything right.

I bonded with my ‘tiel in a similar way... He is 11 and watching this video with me, talking up a storm and giving his opinion too (lots of happy talk! )... Thanks for the video!

I keep my cockatiel cage door open during the day to give him the freedom of coming and going as he pleases. I recommend you do that as well for a much happier and healthier bird. Make sure that if you do this that you keep him in a closed area of the house like a spare bedroom or closed off living area. Clear the area of objects that could harm him. Don't let him chew on things like cords or toxic plants.

introducing the treats and make a connection between the hand (human) and the yummy treats is always a key to gaining trust.

To anyone who finds this, it is completely normal for cockatiels to not eat for the first day or two, as long as they don't lose more than 10% of their body weight!
