    I have seen a few of your videos now, and what you usually put in front of the camera is more finished, even in the sketchbooks. I was happy to see the rougher working drawings in this episode. I think it reveals more of your working process. Myself, I refer to the rough sketchbook as a "gather book", where you explore stuff that doesn't yet have a specific "finished art" outcome in mind, it is just where you gather ideas, thoughts, marks, indications, even scratching from trying a new pencil. Watching many artists on TH-cam, you would think the only art they make is the stuff that is ready to be framed and sold at auction. So, thanks for this one, it puts things in perspective.

    You are by far my favorite watercolorist to learn from! I'm a serious newbie and you present things that teach me and make it attainable to do! Thank you so very much for all of your videos! Someday I will hopefully have your talent!

    An excellent presentation, much appreciated. Product reviews are interesting and painting demos too, but it is so rare that an accomplished artist lifts up the curtains to share the behind the scenes planning and experimenting processes of creating. So often when viewing an artist at work we see them mid final product and miss out on the thinking, shorthand notes, the rearranging of the elements, the nuts and bolts of evaluating the subject that later leads to the final art work. As always Steve, you go beyond just the mind of the media (watercolor) and expose the mind of the artist as well. Thanks. Also, take that annoying bell away from Reese. .

    This is so crucial to get warmed up with, and as you emphasized to work out values, contrast, composition, colors but not details.

    I've just tried doing thumbnails and they are so addictive and liberating! I can try the high-level composition and values without the pressure of knowing that I'm potentially wasting a lot of high quality paper or expecting great results. Ironically, I'm more satisfied with some of my thumbnails than with some of my large scale paintings. Thank you, Steve!

    I was really excited to see this demonstration on doing thumbnails. Since the beginning of the year, I've been doing "an inch of art" a day, and I've been using a lot of your tips already, and will be using some more of what you are discussing in this video. A square inch isn't really big enough, but it helps me to at least do something every day using any method or medium that strikes me at the time, and if nothing does....it ends up just being a doodle. Your video has encouraged me to stop constraining myself to a square inch, and not beat myself up for not having everything be a masterpiece. It started out being a project to keep me creative, but it really ought to be about practice. Thanks again for a fantastic video, and as always, for making me smile right off the bat!

    Thanks so much for this video about using thumbnails Steve. It's come at just the right time to be of great help for me as I have my first ever exhibition as part of a group of local artists coming up this October. I have so many ideas running around my head and this would be a great way to explore them rather than the full sketches which I've been doing so far. Thanks again Steve :)

    Great idea. I also bought a light board - what a time saver! I'd try your favourite brushes too, but delivering just 1 brush to Canada is twice the cost of the brush plus 30% rate exchange. And I totally agree with J.P. Keslensky's comments. I was wondering how to use my journal with arches paper since I'm not good enough to want to keep my paintings in this costly journal. Now I know. Thanks.

    Wow! This was extremely helpful! I struggle combining flowers and leaves. Sounds like it's a no brainer, but I watch artists paint modern florals and I cannot figure out how they get the flowers and leaves layered, just so. I'm going to try out the thumbnails...maybe of each component with one larger thumbnail working out how to put it all together. Thanks so much!!

    Great explanation of the uses of thumbnails. If you like Wyeth (you didn't mention which Wyeth) you should plan a trip to the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, PA where you can view the Wyeth paintings. Chadds Ford is also a great area for some scenic sketching along the Brandywine.

      @waynel2162 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Kayla.
      Like you, I tend to get caught up in trying to detail everything.
      With shading, try to just mix a shade, then just glaze it in.
      Remember that you need to be a LOT darker than you think you need [ to allow for the drying effect ] and I find that by wetting the area of shade, then dropping in your mix, you get really great results.

    • @kaylamento6937

      Mainly focus on values and the shape of values rather than the shape and details of the things in the scene. Shadows, midtones and highlights have shapes and they can be simplified more easily. Also use a bigger brush than you might if detailing the scene.

    Could you sometime address photographing watercolor? I use an slr in flat natural light and paintings consistently look awful in photos . They are sharp, contrasty, and they seem to show paint saturation. Cant figure it out. Thanks!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Complex subject. You said SLR. Are you using film or a DSLR? Film is problematic and much more difficult to get right. I can tell you right away that the most common mistake is incorrect exposure, usually under exposure. Auto exposure will do that quite often on art. The camera should be set to manual exposure and either do a reading off a gray card or shoot a bracket of exposures to see what is best. Put the camera on a tripod and use your lowest ISO setting (100 usually). Higher ISOs have more noise and are more contrasty. Cameras make a big difference too. The sensors in certain point and shoot cameras can have contrasty tendencies but if you're using a DSLR that shouldn't be an issue. Also, getting great results almost always takes some post production. I use Photoshop and do a lot of color balance correcting to get it right. There is no set formula for that just whatever the specific art needs.

    • @jeffreychurchill3976
      @jeffreychurchill3976 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! Thanks. I use a Canon DSLR, usually on automatic, though. I will try a manual exposure. I usually edit the photos some, but part of the problem is that they are just too sharp, which I thought just might be the digital camera - a little blur was once the easiest tho achieve.

    I just looked up water soluble graphite and the options are vast! Could you please share exactly what you use? I am a beginner and need a place to start... Thank you.

      The only water soluble graphite I really use is a set of Derwent pencils. Here is a video on their use. th-cam.com/video/jEXghJuRvvs/w-d-xo.html

      Ok, watched it! Very helpful. So you also mention in the video (sketch from magazine / composition) that you don't always even add color... so now I'm curious if you add color (with water), it would mix with the gray... do you just fill in between the sketch for accents? And do you have a video about that? Thank you.

      Once the gray is activated it doesn't rewet or mix much. It will a little. If its still dry it will mix quite a lot.

    How do you feel about watercolor brush pens?

    • @mindofwatercolor

      Fine for sketching if you like using them. They are dye based and not light fast so not recommended for finished art. I don't prefer them personally.

    Curious what brush you are using? It looks like a da vinci cosmotop spin quill..looking in the dickblick catalog. How do you like it? Thanks!

      Yes, DaVinci Cosmotop Spin. I put a link in the video description. Love them.
