  • Welcome back to the Fluctus Channel for a feature on the daily activity of a local Vietnamese fisherman who uses a massive old diesel engine extracted from a truck to power his peculiar fishing boat. The daily activities of men like these contribute to the enormous global seafood industry.

    Very interesting. We use similar to the same diesels in auxiliary sailboat or cruising sailboat. Diesels for 20-120 hp. When my transmission went out en route from Panama to San Francisco, off of the pacific coast of Mexico, I limped into the Puerto Madero, a commercial fishing village, I went into Tapachula, the main city and found a automotive transmission shop. When I told him the transmission that I needed rebuilt he smiled, dropped the exact rebuild kit on the counter and said esta? ( this? ). Had I had false teeth I would have dropped them on the counter. Turns out that the local fishing boats use the exact same transmission.( Borg Warner hydraulic). And they rebuilt them all the time. It cost me about 1/4 of what it would have back in the US. Small world with amazing people.

    Back in the mid to late 70s I had business with a man who was responsible for scrapping most of the older buses (single and double decker) in use in the UK. He was the first person in Britain to come up with the idea of exporting the diesel engines to the Far East for use on these boats and he became a multi-millionaire.

      FYI The Royal Navy used two bus engines on our mine hunters for most of the mine detection work :)

    The noise of zero mufflers is insane, the open water and rivers have no noise barriers, so its just the thundering roar of ancient diesel's deafening you, the boats too are ancient, some look over a hundred years old, tarred up and repaired over and over, you still see steam shovels operating along the shore as well. An incredible country, but the noisiest place I've ever been.

    If they geared them for and used surface-piercing drives, they could go faster. There's a reason unlimited hydroplanes use them. Fully submerged propellers are less efficient.

    Pivoting the engine 180 degrees would put the engine over the water and the giant meat grinder prop into the boat passenger area.

      Perhaps they add baffles to the oil pan and sump to insure proper lubrication. I wonder how the engine is cooled, I don’t see a radiator.

    • @bigredc222
      @bigredc222 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mplsmark222 At 1:47 you can see a green pump between the motor and transmission. Above that pump is a cast iron tank. That's the cooling system, you can see hoses going different places, one goes down next to the drive shaft to suck up seawater.
