Special thanks Cian for upload. Seán Ó Faoláin - one of our greats. People might check out Vive Moi if some interest Ireland early decades 20thC.

Listening to this, around 27:30, trust in 'Telefis Eireann'. Awfully apt today, PAC appearance by R Turbridy. (I love the Trinity guy's huge white polo-neck) "Father" Michael Cleary, 55 mins, he's "not against sex..." we know now.

An effective and courageous film...and it did not even touch upon the violence of the Christian Brothers, the industrial schools, the Magdalen laundries, nor the endemic sexual abuse of children by the catholic clergy.

Great social documentary of Ireland in the 60s.

I once showed this to my parents, who grew up in the 1960s. It obviously rang true because they were so angry. They leapt to the defence of the church and FF and FG. The hypocrisy runs deep.

Modern Ireland is deeply flawed too - you'll probably attack me for saying that. Same energy as with your parents.

@@christopherconnolly5340 I am no apologist for modern Ireland, so no need to assume I would attack you. It is just flawed in different ways.

Fr Michael Cleary, "celibacy is a personal sacrifice for me," yet he had his own partner, and they had a son together! Do as I say and not as I do..

That was Peter Lennon genius - the depth of hypocracy is nowhere better revealed.

What’s the sparsely attended hurling match, does anyone know? They have the guys in white coats behind the goals so I assume it’s a game of some standing but it’s a very paltry crowd.

    1. This is a fascinating film.
    2. Non-Smokers must have been viewed as right weirdos, 54 years ago.
    3. Who's the guy singing "Rocky Road to Dublin" from about 15 minutes in?
    4. The GAA mentality actually shocked me.
    5. That girl at 39:58 was not a born dancer but she was definitely out to get a man!
    6. The wedding reception seemed pretty normal by any standards and the older priest came across as a decent guy but Harry and Bríd seemed to be at their own wedding under protest!

The guy singing from 14 minutes in is Ted McKenna. He is hard to find on TH-cam because of a much better known Ted McKenna but if you search for Ted McKenna Paddy Brennan you will find most of the only album they made: The McKenna Brothers live in O'Donoghue's. Ted was my best man and I am happy to say he is still playing at age 80+.

I'm not sure If I still have the original ISO/DVD rip file I gleamed it from. The quality you see in this TH-cam video is about as good as it ever looked though from the original DVD release so I would suggest using the following site to simply download this video: downloaderto.com/en/ downloaderto.com/en/.

I had an inarticulte anger as a child, the casual entitled brutality of "Christian "brothers, the apathy of the gangsters in Leinster house, the abandoned sisters and brothers in the north. Yet you live in hope for some kind of justice.

Interesting, but very male dominated, the mother got her fed up view's across, the only femail in the newspaper discussion had no voice at all, no nun's view,or any professional ,nurse or artist, writer singer, musician, Dr ,even at the end a load of running school boys, how sad is that, also no actress to be heard 😮
